GTA IV: New trailers, multiplayer details

Rockstar Games is poised to release their latest crime-drama opus Grand Theft Auto IV in a matter of weeks but that hasn't stopped the steady flow of updates on their official site. Yesterday Rockstar released two new trailers from within the game as well as details on the Team and Race multiplater modes found in the game, with a promise of details on the Co-op and Competitive modes before the April 29 release. The two new trailers can be found after the jump, in the mean time our big brother, Joystiq, broke down some of the multiplayer modes found in the game which you can find below.
Team modes
- Team Deathmatch - Kill the opposing team and loot their dead bodies. The team with most cash at the end wins.
- Team Mafiya Work - Work as a team to complete "Mafiya" contracts before time expires; missions include: escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins and stealing cars. Teams can interfere with opposing teams, the team with the most cash at the end of the round that wins.
- Team Car Jack City - Teams must collect cars that spawn around the map and take them to drop off points for cash; the condition of the cars when dropped off determines the amount of cash, except for bonus cars stuffed with drugs (these have a set value). Teams must deliver the vehicles ordered by the "boss." The team with the most cash at the end wins.
- Cops n' Crooks - The crook team must get its boss to safety. The cop team has to take him down or simply destroy the getaway vehicle (see sub-modes below).
- All for One - Crooks win by getting their boss to a getaway vehicle and escaping. Cops win by killing the Boss before he gets away.
- One for All - No boss, just plain crooks trying to escape. Cops win by killing all of the crooks (this is elimination style). Crooks win by filling up the getaway vehicle, which holds up to four players.
- Turf War - Timed capture-the-base. A number of bases are scattered across the map and can be captured by standing in the appropriate area for a short time; bases can be captured more quickly with multiple teammates, but can't be captured if opposing players are on the base. Captured bases earn money. The team with the most cash at the end wins.
- Race - Checkpoint races with the ability to respawn at the last checkpoint passed; numerous courses for cars, boats and helicopters -- laps and vehicle class/type are adjustable (see sub-modes below).
- Free Race - Point-to-point races; first one to the finish wins.
- Cannonball Run - Traverse several checkpoints anyway you can.
- GTA Race - Checkpoint races with the added element of combat; weapons spawn throughout courses. Players can also exit their vehicles during road races.

Xav, you of all people know that we aim for the head during pre-order training. Aiming for the chest is impractical. People might keep their wallets in a jacket pocket and we wouldn't want to tear those five dollar bills.

This is true.
I've been outta that game for so long I nearly forgot!

I accidentally pre-ordered the special edition. I feel like I've been grabbed by my ankles, lifted upside down, and then shaken till all the money in my pockets fell to the ground (to be collected by the pre-order nazi's).
Atleast I didn't do it at Gamestop

looks like I've got a new multiplayer game to play besides CoD4 and Halo 3 now. good memories with the GTA series, day-one purchase for me.

The multiplayer details have been on the wiki page for weeks now (a friend made me check it out cause I honest wasn't interested in this game) but was a good read non-the-less. I'm actually somewhat excited for this game after having read about the multiplayer side.

Also I keep getting a "Sorry you cannot view this video at this time" message when I enter my birthdate. I'm well of age.
Anticrawl @ Apr 12th 2008 10:32AM
Hrm, nevermind they seem to be working now.

It seems like they're not to imaginative about the game modes. We have a huge city full of stuff to do an they're giving us a DM,Pseudo-Assault,CTF,Elimination,Territories and Race.
Okay maybe they didn't fuck it up as badly as Crackdown did(H U G E Multi potential) but 6 gamemodes isn't that much.
PS: My favourite Crackdown idea would be a elimination with Cops on full strength, driving and shooting(with very bad agility) and Crooks on max agility(sucking at everything else).

The design of this game is around more of the single-player aspect of the game. The story, and just being able to roam around all on your own and what not.
I think the 6 different modes are actually just fine and am glad they didn't spend too much more time because that could have meant that they were spending too much time on the multiplayer with sacrificing the other. And that wouldn't have been good at all.
Thomas @ Apr 12th 2008 11:51AM
It has 15 modes.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ Apr 12th 2008 12:11PM
Where did ya get such info? I've checked GTA4 site and there's only 6.
Xav de Matos @ Apr 12th 2008 12:30PM
I think there are 15 different types (or variations) but six actual modes. So you're both right with that.
Also, JakubK666 good idea with Crackdown. While the GTA IV modes are groundbreaking, they are new to the series and a welcome addition for anyone who decides to take their adventure online.
Halonut1 @ Apr 12th 2008 5:21PM
Theres also free-roam with up to 16 players. the host pick the main part you spawn in, but you can go where ever. in thoery..you could make your own game types...
IGN or something said they went into the games central park, jacked and parked a crap load of busses in the pond/lake, then shot a crapload of rockets on it...and it only lagged a hint. They all each had like a 4 star wanted level..Haha.
Grimm @ Apr 12th 2008 7:04PM
The crackdown idea is great except you may have problems catching the crooks lol.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ Apr 13th 2008 9:55AM
Not if you have Agency Cars and Fireflies RLs it isn't.
Even though after getting 4 starts with Shooting I've finished the game solely using the Scoped Pistol(and Fireflies for bosses).Head lock-on within split-second.
prence @ Apr 12th 2008 11:10AM
So.. pretty much it's Saints Row.
nizzy1115 @ Apr 12th 2008 12:34PM
My preorder better be filled...
andyface @ Apr 12th 2008 12:56PM
I'm getting very excited about this game, not least the pretty pretty graphics, the vehicles look nice and so do the weapons.
I'm not too bothered by the multiplayer stuff, but it does sound kinda fun non the less.
ZeroCorpse @ Apr 12th 2008 6:56PM
Now, if only there were some sort of REAL enforcement of the M-rating on Live, so that we wouldn't have to play this game with a bunch of foul-mouthed, racist, juvenile, idiotic kids.
Why can't Live as for ID or something?
Neeko @ Apr 12th 2008 8:54PM
Serious why is everyone sooo excited for this? Without actually seeing some gameplay NOT CUTSCENES who really cares.. All weve been given are cutscenes which everyone knows amount to nothing when it comes to quality of a game.. Shoe me some gameplay ROCKSTAR and maybe youll get my hard on $$.
svenhoek @ Apr 13th 2008 2:15AM
Your hard on money? Im not sure they want that.
Digitalspirit @ Apr 13th 2008 2:03PM
Shoes, hard ons? What sort of game are you looking for?!?!
Big Bird @ Apr 14th 2008 12:30PM
I agree a shame they never will show any gameplay on a gta game. Just how they are I guess. I have my preorder in, so I guess it works :(
crow412 @ Apr 28th 2008 4:07PM
why would you want to add an id to the xbox im 16 so does that mean i shouldnt be allowed to play thats a little retarded i have a job and am more mature than most the adults i know so would that be fair at all
