In the same press release that told us about
the return of the classic fighting game
Soulcalibur, Namco Bandai also revealed another XBLA game,
titled Infinitum PowerUp Forever. With gameplay that seems like a mash-up of
Geometry Wars, Ikaruga, and
flOw, Infinitum PowerUp Forever is an overhead outer space shooter with no boundaries to movement, no walls at all, invisible or otherwise. The twist is that destroying enemies will increase the size, shape, and power of your ship. But as it's size increases, the amount of screen it takes up doesn't. The camera zooms out at the rate of your growth, with older enemies getting smaller and smaller, and your new challenges getting bigger and bigger. Things that my have appeared to be walls or barriers are eventually revealed to be gigantic enemies as your ship slowly grows in size. As muddled as the twin-stick shooter genre is on XBLA,
Infinitum PowerUp Forever has an admittedly intriguing twist and we'll give it a shot whenever it sees release.
[
Note: This title is being referred to as PowerUp Forever elsewhere, however the company's official press release lists the title as Infinitum, so we're going with that. ]
[Update: Namco Bandai has made up it's mind and the
official press release has been updated to reflect the the correct title,
PowerUp Forever, which we can all agree is the shittier name.]

I'm interested in this...I wasn't really digging Ikaruga for some reason (*gasp!* blasphemy, I know), and generally I like scrolling shooters.
Anyone ever play UN Squadron for SNES? Now that game was the shit...in between levels you could buy a new ship w/ different guns and buy your power weapons like in tank wars style games.

Sounds a LOT like the tide pool phase of Spore.

What other twin-stick shooters do you guys recommend? I really like the control scheme. I LOVE Geometry Wars, but really don't like Undertow. What other one's are there?

I would recommend that you buy Assault Heroes. It's another great twin-stick shooter and it was recently discounted on XBLA. I've been getting worn out on twin-stick shooters myself but I must admit, PowerUp Forever's unique hook may just turn me around. What I really want is Super Stardust HD. The developer is already making an XBLA game (a rumored golf title), but I don't know if Sony has Super Stardust HD as a PS3 exclusive. Maybe X3F can send a question over to the devs. I believe they are named Housemarque.

I would recommend Mutant Storm Reloaded or Mutant Storm Empire. But Omega Five is pretty awesome too!

Sounds like the mechanic from Katamari. Which was another NamcoBandai game.

I just read the press release from the link provided and it actually lists the game as PowerUp Forever and no-where does it mention Infinitum. WTF?
