Xbox 360 console update: nothing to see here
If you fired up your 360 earlier this morning you may have been prompted to download a new console update. And seeing that it is Springtime you may also have instantaneously concluded that the console update you downloaded was the Spring dashboard update. But that's where your logical sense steered you wrong.According to Major Nelson, this morning the Xbox Live team rolled out a new console update that simply adds code to "prepare for future growth of the service" and is NOT the Spring dashboard update. You will not see any new features or any new dashboard excitement, it's simply one of those behind the scenes updates that's a ball of mystery. And what about the Spring dash update? We still have no information as Microsoft is still keeping hush-hush about its release and feature set.

Maybe its to make xbox live as user unfriendly as the playstation store, oh wait one update isnt capable of that.
vanhelsingh @ Apr 18th 2008 1:48PM

Is Cartman's 360 hooked up to a Sony tv? BLASPHAMY!!
avantgardener @ Apr 18th 2008 2:30PM
Actually it's a Fony. :)
It's been a subtle joke on South Park for awhile.
Anticrawl @ Apr 18th 2008 3:12PM
My 360 is hooked up to a Bravia. Two best tv brands are Sony and Sharp, followed by Samsung in a close second. Sony should just drop all their divisions and focus on making movies/tvs.
Ripcord83 @ Apr 18th 2008 5:04PM
Samsung makes Sony Screens.
Just the guts are different.
I will agree that Sony is #1, but samsung is #2.
I returned my crap sharp and got a Better Sammy.
panfriedcharlie @ Apr 18th 2008 8:47PM
Well, Live is set to go down on the 21st. Maybe this update springloads our 360s to come alive with new content after Live goes live again.
dylan @ Apr 18th 2008 1:58PM
I love how every update is "to prepare for future growth of the service" just once I'd like to hear them say "We are installing a subliminal messaging system that will turn you all into flesh eating zombies or convince you that Chumbawumba was a great band... one of the two, you go home and figure it out."
john john @ Apr 19th 2008 5:17AM
but chumbawamba was a great band.. oh no.. wait :P
ABout the update:
Any how.. they should have explained that on their website, dammit!
My other computer is so full of trojans that I thought a trojan got into the xbox360 and now my xbox360 will feature a f@kin trojan as well :(
Ah! What a realief :)
Tony @ Apr 18th 2008 2:00PM
I figured if anything it was just some update for controllers... didn't they do that for the wireless guitars and SceneIt?
c. thomas @ Apr 18th 2008 2:32PM
That was like 2-3 months ago, Jesus.
Bluemanrule @ Apr 18th 2008 2:27PM
A few board posters have noted that their console is getting bricked by the update. You may want to edit your post with such information. See MajorNelson.com.
Huey2k2 @ Apr 18th 2008 2:36PM
I somehow doubt the update is the cause of anyones consoles getting RROD'd. RROD's are caused by a hardware failure of some kind, and a software update like this doesn't cause random hardware failures.
It's more than likely that any consoles that are bricking after the update are purely coincidental as there is no warning signs that your console will ever RROD (I know I am on my 3rd console).
Andrew @ Apr 18th 2008 3:47PM
Is it possible that updating the console puts the most strain on the console, therefore making it more vulnerable to the flaws that makes the console RRoD? I'm no hardcore technician, but it seems plausible.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ Apr 18th 2008 2:59PM
They're making the console ready for Motion-Sensitive Xmotes.
franoculator @ Apr 18th 2008 3:09PM
Bah.
I skipped the update at first, as I was in a rush to get the Backyardigans (off of my Upnp server) playing for the spawn so I could shower.
To my horror, the video player wouldn't play anything at all, saying a media update was required to play this file (which has been played about 500 times already).
That's a pretty crummy thing to do, but I suffered through the 10 second download and all was well.
prometh3rus @ Apr 18th 2008 3:58PM
I have been using WMP11 to share and stream media from my Win XP PC upstairs, last night I switched to a media sharing server software program called TVersity. It is capable of not only media sharing from your PC, but streaming internet video and audio feeds and podcasts to your 360 and transcode video in real-time to make it playable on the 360 regardless of format. At any rate, installed and setup that up last night, was pleased with how well it worked overall (the real-time transcoding has some work to go yet on it I think). After the update this morning I was unable to stream ANY of the internet video through TVersity to the 360, and it would not play video that wasn't already in a suitable codec for the 360 to play. So their little update, whatever it did seems to have disabled certain kinds of media playback, or added more DRM crap to the mix so that you can ONLY play stuff through the marketplace or your PC if it is in a format that the 360 likes (still seems pretty limited to me...) Thought I'd share that--I'm planning on messing with it some more after work today, but I was pissed about it this morning. Hopefully it's something I can correct or I'm going to be suspect about downloading any further freakin' console updates in the future!
matty @ Apr 18th 2008 4:15PM
i hope the update didnt ruin my video playback options! that would be disastrous.
FuriCuriMatt @ Apr 18th 2008 5:10PM
Actually, after the update auto-restart my console booted back up with no video. It booted up fine after i shut it all the way down again though.
SharpBlade @ Apr 18th 2008 5:20PM
I've been hearing too many bad things going wrong with this update. I think it's time to remove the ethernet cable and stay off their network. If they can't even give the owners of their product details of what they are sending to their system that we paid for and is as reliable as a glass hammer, then it's just not worth it.
All this MS secrecy is really starting to p*ss me off.
Kamal @ Apr 18th 2008 5:31PM
It was to allow for user created mods for UT3!
ferrarigtc @ Apr 20th 2008 8:38PM
My Xbox RROD. I am not a happy camper considering I will not get this back from msft in time for GTA IV . On a lighter note, Target has a great 30 days return policy on electronics...........
nick @ Apr 18th 2008 9:38PM
Would be cool if it were Silverlight and it has something to do with Netflix integration. But alas, I'm a dreamer...
coolraz @ Apr 19th 2008 11:01AM
OMG it scared the shit out of me. when it rebooted, the screen fizzed and went black for a while i thought the stupid update bricked the console. fortunately, a restart solved the problem.
whatever the update was, it better be worth the near heart attack i just got!
Anthony @ Apr 21st 2008 3:38PM
Great...except now my Xbox freezes and won't play a game. This sucks!!!!
Du @ Apr 19th 2008 10:21PM
Well, seems as though the update broke Connect360 for us Mac users as well.
This effing sucks, I just finally got C360 working again and now it's DEAD again... BOOO on MS for this crappy update.
CrackHo77 @ Apr 30th 2008 6:44AM
Has anyone suffered from internet connectivity issues after this update??? i keep on lagging out of games, signing out of live on random occasions even viewing someone's profile takes forever to load....

boogie @ May 9th 2008 11:11AM

Good GOD what a bunch of whining panzies, GROW UP. You all deserve the crap you get for spending 24 hours linked and booted up like your brain is in permanent XBOX space.
I never leave my connection always on, because I am not a LAME DUCK online player - especially of blood-and-guts games that suck your braincells. As if you had one cell to start with.
I have recieved all the updates as I choose to enable my connection, and NEVER have I connected my C to the 360. That is asking for trouble- because likely you have no f'n clue about your computer either. Do you guys go to school, have jobs...or do we need to send your worthless asses to Iraq?
have owned 2 consoles. he first I sold- because no RPG'S, and I had the PS3. I sold the PS3 as well. Now I have the Elite- and have since 8-07. With 3 great RPG'S, Iam enjoying it...and no update problems, and no ring of fire because I don't know how to take care of a game unit, games- or because am a f**ktard gamegeek. I WAS 30 when I began RPGS in 1991. I have had every system, evry damned RPG and am sick of you pansoes and your Gears of War and Halo's and warfare. No wonder some of you become gun-wielding school-snipers.
GO GET A JOB. GET A LIFE.
LOSERS.
-A happy part-time gamer.
