Video: Unreal Tournament 3 does split screen
One of the additions to the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 is local split screen. A very useful feature to have when entertaining a buddy or relative who too would like to join in on the carnage. So, today we thought it to be the opportune time to show you a video of split screen UT3 in action. And that's exactly what we embedded above. Everything looks lovely, fast paced and it even sports a solid frame rate to boot, but from what we can tell, a bit more of the players' character gets chopped off to accommodate for the FOV. No matter, it's still a sexy UT3 frag fest.

NvM @ Apr 20th 2008 10:29AM
But can splitscreen go online?
That's what matters.
Digital Limit @ Apr 20th 2008 10:58AM
Yeah, if it's just local it's not a huge deal. But it's still nice, of course.
JerkfacedFed @ Apr 20th 2008 1:40PM
Yea the people who write these articles seriously need to cover the important stuff instead of rambling about the FOV getting cut off by a fourth of an inch
NitroFrost @ Apr 20th 2008 10:37AM
UT is my game of choice no matter what (UC2 wasn't although). I had so much fun with unreal championship and i hope i have some with this also. Now I have a Idea for the mod thing, why make it kind of like the fileshare system on Halo, I think it would work.
webster1990 @ Apr 20th 2008 10:43AM
yeah, i suggested a similar thing in one of the other posts. with a sort of bungie favourites style thing each week.
NitroFrost @ Apr 20th 2008 11:06AM
Well the favs is like a sure fire thing but if they can do just a fileshare system like online two your 360 much like bungie does although it is more like you go online hit the link that tells your tag to download that thing next time you login. I think they can do something.
Tony @ Apr 20th 2008 12:25PM
In this case it's not quite as easy... UT's system is far more robust. You can retool things entirely, make new models, create completely new maps.
In Halo 3, everything that's being shared already exists in game. So they don't need to test it and they don't need to worry about file size because nothing totally unique to the system is being transferred.
Maybe they can implement a similar system... as far as sharing goes it would be a great method. But upkeep and implementation would be significantly more difficult.

NitroFrost, haven't seen you online lately, where you been? GATORADE!
NitroFrost @ Apr 20th 2008 2:34PM
RROD put me out. Its in Texas right now hope to get it back soon.
emirabal @ Apr 20th 2008 10:51AM
Im willing to bet that you will have to submit your file share to epic and then they will review it and post it as a downloadable content within the game.
I Love Bowser @ Apr 20th 2008 11:00AM
A dead franchise for a dead genre. Fitting for a dying console.
Sinister Rouge @ Apr 20th 2008 11:21AM
Think you've got the wrong website, mate.
Cal @ Apr 20th 2008 11:25AM
Wow you're so positive, especially glancing over your recent posts, how about you go and find some happiness somewhere and leave us to enjoy our alive franchises, genres and consoles?
Digitalspirit @ Apr 20th 2008 11:40AM
n00b. Dead genre? FPS? LOL. I can understand the dead console comment though, the PS3 is pretty much redundant, that's why an improved version of UT3 is coming for the superior Xbox 360 platform.
Ninjakamster @ Apr 21st 2008 7:37PM
Its not like you guys are much better than Bowser, bashing on the PS3 as well, your just as bad as him.
You see a troll, no need to sink down to his/her level.

Am I the only one that prefers a side-by-side split screen? Doesn't it make more sense to have an 8:9 aspect ratio vs. 16:4.5? Most split screen games are like this now and it drives me nuts. At least give us the option of doing side-by-side split screen.
Sora267 @ Apr 20th 2008 7:50PM
I also like side-by-side from the racing games I used to play before I got obsessed with RPGs. Top-bottom splitscreen confuses me now >_>
j343 @ Apr 20th 2008 11:55AM
is it 4 player split screen for local? I miss 4 player split screen, the only game i have now that does that is halo...
Kururugi Suzaku @ Apr 20th 2008 12:06PM
Wait a sec, you're actually telling me that they released an FPS without split screen. Wow. That's really shoddy Epic.
The 360 ver will have it, not much of a feature since it should have been there anyway.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 20th 2008 1:57PM
Uh, what? Maybe there were technical limitations on the PS3, as most games, I'm sure, don't have split screen on that console.
Its not shoddy work by Epic- if it was, then UT3 wouldn't be nearly as great as it is on the PC.
JerkfacedFed @ Apr 20th 2008 1:37PM
Sweet, framerate looks really solid
Johnny @ Apr 20th 2008 3:50PM
I think i remember some dev on some game (crackdown or saints maybe) saying that when you do split screens you have to render everything twice (or times however many screens their are) if thats truly the case, then maybe that says something about the differences in the two consoles.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 20th 2008 7:17PM
Yes, thats true. Whenever you have a split screen the game's components must be rendered twice for each "screen". Since the PS3 only has 1 core, then that is very possible that it just doesn't have the power to get through the brunt of the game which can't make use of it's 8 SPEs.
Robert @ Apr 20th 2008 11:28PM
This has nothing to do with the hardware, even COD4 has split screen on both consoles, Epic did not have that feature implemented at the time UT3 for PS3 was released, so now it is a XBox360 only feature in order to hide the absence of being able to accept user created mods (remember user created mods is the capability to install what you like, not what Epic things are the best ones)
Zeus.:God @ Apr 20th 2008 11:46PM
Epic has good taste, I have no doubt that what they were to add would be good.
Robert, you don't seem to realize that a majority of the shit put up for any game (mods, skins, models, etc) is exactly that. Shit. I would rather have the best posted while all the shoddy, crappy, and otherwise worthless junk.
I have the PC version and haven't used a single mod yet, and I'm totally contented with the game.
The Sound @ Apr 21st 2008 1:30AM
I don't think it has anything to do with limitations, but either Epic doesn't want to fiddle with it, or MS told them to keep it off the PS3 version.
I just played a 32 player, largest map, capture the flag, splitscreen game in Warhawk, with explosions and all the vehicles and stuff, there wasn't a problem with framerate or anything.
Besides, the SPE's on the PS3 make it so that the main core doesn't have to do the brunt of the work. with AI, explosions, particles, physics, all being able to be handled by the SPE's (as well as a joint PPE [main core] effort).
Porkfist @ Apr 20th 2008 4:11PM
Man, I hope it's 4 player split screen.....
c. thomas @ Apr 20th 2008 7:06PM
I'm getting this, I am not gonna let no mod support spoil the entire game.
