MONOPOLY announced it goes directly to jail

MONOPOLY the video game, inspired by the MONOPOLY HERE & NOW World Edition board game, is set for release sometime this Fall and is one of those games that would be suited perfectly for the XBLA. But after reading the press release, we're under the impression that the game will in fact be a retail (and full priced) release. Boo! Boo! Boo! Also, per the release, it says that you'll be able to play MONOPOLY in "offline single or multi-player mode". No online multiplayer? Double boo to you EA! Go directly to jail, do not pass Go and do not collect our $59.99.

Only one word for this kind of thing...
FUBAR
(actually five words, I guess)
Bubs @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:06PM
EA Kills again !!!!
JSBeckerist @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:16PM
From the article:
"Play in offline single or multi-player mode and compete to own it all and win!"
-- NOTHING saying there's no online mode. Considering this PR is ALSO for the PS2, ANY speculation about there being ONLY offline modes COULD (potentially) only apply to this.
Here's some speculation: maybe the press release was written in extremely broad terms intentionally so that it would apply to ALL versions. See? I can speculate too, and there's no reason to instantly HATE on EA.
By the way, why would a company like EA want to HURT it's market?
Answer: It doesn't, there are just some REALLY cranky people on this board.
Shame on you X3F for starting this FUD and shame on you Fanbois who probably have NO real legitimate complaints about EA who just like to flame for flaming sake...
JSBeckerist @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:33PM
BTW, Hasbro is who is releasing this, not EA...again, to bitch about EA is completely irrelevant........
Grimm @ Apr 23rd 2008 4:50PM
Dude EA doesn't have to worry about hurting their market. EA's market is idiots...that and the wii market. Idiots will buy anything you tell them to buy. Also even if it does have online modes it's still not worth a 60 dollar price tag. You can't add enough to a game like monopoly to make it worth a full price. At best I'd say they could release it as a budget title (20-30 bucks) but it would still need online modes to even be sold that high. This really should be released on arcade...
UNSCleric @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:35PM
EA is a cancer to the industry.
Josh @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:38PM
boycott this nonsense! this sort of thing belongs on xbla
Aaron @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:38PM
EA=WORTHLESS
Dan_C @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:43PM
pathetic
Doug @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:44PM
Talk about missing your target... EA has completely lost touch with gamers.
andyg8180 @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:47PM
lets all hear it for EA...
hip hip... YOURE GAAYYY!!!
I was praying for a legacy version on XBLA... screw that...
Delgado @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:19PM
Do you mean gay or lame?
Gabriel @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:48PM
I loved Monopoly and I would so have bought this had it been for XBLA. Now I won't even give it another thought.
WAY TO KILL A PROFIT!
Geez, didn't these people go to business school or something? Are the frakin idiots?
Bravo6 @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:51PM
stupid
Blue_Falcon @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:53PM
I don't think it's going for $60. I've heard reports of $40.
Anyway, that's still overpriced and ridiculous either way. XBLA would've been a no-brainer.
qbix @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:02PM
If you buy this, you are pretty much sucking EA's you know what. This is ridiculous and sadly, the uninformed parents of kids with 360s will buy it and EA will be encouraged to continue selling you casual games at full retail price.
Do not buy this game.
Jonah Falcon @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:03PM
Well, maybe it'll go the Tetris route.
Monopoly Splash? :p
CharleyTony @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:04PM
a monopoly xbla game would be great if they can keep the price lower than the actual board game !!
a full dvd retail disc that costs 50-60 bucks is an outrage ! I wont even look a the box if they intend to ship the game that way, and Im a pretty big monopoly fan.
instead of buying over priced videogames, Ill just ply it on messenger.... each having a board game at home and making moves for both (all) players
Wilson @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:06PM
I think I can sum all my feelings into one word:
FAIL.
Flower Mane @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:08PM
Hey, at least we cant accuse one another of stealing from the bank.
Jonman @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:11PM
Hmm, for $23 from Amazon, I can buy the Deluxe Edition of the physical board game. That doesn't have online multiplayer either. Cheap at twice the price.
*Deluxe*, you hear?
My guess is that with a price point of 800 MS pretend-dollars, a quarter of a budget retail release, you'd see way more than 4 times as many sales as you'll see at retail.
It's my firm belief that Hasbro are a shower of idiots.
Flower Mane @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:13PM
I am tired of the lame casual games though, xbla is flooded with that crap. Every Wednesday is a disappointment until Dishwasher Dead Samurai, or Castle Crashers comes out.
Procris @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:20PM
Monopoly on XBLA would have been fantastic, with multiplayer over Live as well. Shame, it'll fail at retail. No one will buy it for $40-60.
craig64 @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:23PM
I just bought the board game (regular Monopoly) about a week ago for $15. I'd suggest taking the same route, as there's no need for a full fledged retail Monopoly game. (I did play the N64 version though).
Morgon @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:26PM
Someone get Peter Moore on the phone. He isn't really letting this atrocity happen, is he...?!
Jonah Falcon @ Apr 23rd 2008 2:58PM
Be glad it's being inflicted on the PS2 and PS3, too. It's not just a blight on the 360.
Josh @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:01PM
What a waste of a potentially great possibility. If they would've just put out the XBLA version of the original for 800 MS points it would've sold like hotcakes.
stinger503 @ Apr 23rd 2008 3:04PM
Hey at least we don't have to buy monopoly money.
Also isn't it ironic the EA of all companies is making a monopoly game. ;)
wickedpheonix @ Apr 23rd 2008 6:07PM
More like it's going to be a minigame bundled in a $19.99 board game...
