Brett Favre named as Madden NFL 09 cover athlete
Confirming an earlier report that appeared on GameDaily, Brett Favre announced he would be honored as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 09; the 20th Anniversary of the series. The announcement was made during an interview by Late Show host David Letterman. While news may come as a surprise considering Favre recently retired from the sport, his accomplishments alone warrant the appointment.
In his career Brett Favre was awarded one Super Bowl championship, 3 AP NFL MVP awards, was a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection 9 and 7 times respectively and holds over 7 NFL records, including most career passing yards (61,655 all-time yards).
Finally, a cover athlete that can end that silly Madden curse. Unless Favre falls off his fishing boat this summer or something.
Madden NFL 09 is set to release on August 12.

Never under estimate the curse of the Madden monster!

The Madden curse stops for no one.
Prediction: Aaron Rogers will be injured, thus forcing Favre out of retirement.
Conclusion: Madden curse lives on.
NitroFrost @ Apr 25th 2008 11:28AM
Jim if that happened that would be one of the greatest thing ever poor Rogers though.
Jim Halpert DM @ Apr 25th 2008 11:31AM
That's Mr. Halpert to you Nitro

And if Favre gets knocked around like a sickly pinata on the way to a 4-12 record?

I am a huge Farve fan an really think he deserves an honor like this. That being said. How much sense dose it make to have a retired player on the cover of Maden 09? Are they going to include him as playable in the game?

I haven't played Madden football since the NFL handed EA the keys to the kingdom. I love football, but not monopolies.

It's more likely that he'll fall off his tractor while he's sitting around on his 400 acres. I don't know how much the cover athletes matter to the game's sales, but it's interesting that EA chose a player who probably doesn't have a lot of popularity among the Madden crowd. Of course, it's a lot safer move than the flash-in-the-pan athletes or the felons, murderers, and rapists who have been on the cover in the last few years.

Would it be called a monopoly if 2K Sports had the NFL License? EA won the bidding. Its that simple. Other companies had an equal chance at it. A lot of people think that EA just went out on their own and bought the license. This is not the case.

Wanna look up the definition of "monopoly" again?
Shad3Wolf @ Apr 25th 2008 12:06PM
You sir! Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200!
Jonah Falcon @ Apr 25th 2008 11:37AM
Favre was already cursed by the Giants a few months ago. :D

"... was a Pro Bowl and All-Pro section 9 and 7 times respectfully ...".
I guess you meant "selection" and "respectively". Although I guess He was indeed respectful when picked. ;)

has a different release date then X3F...

It's got to be a typo. Every other site has it coming out 7/12/08, except for xbox.com, the date is 5/12/08. Madden always comes out around 1 month before the season starts.
vidGuy @ Apr 25th 2008 4:27PM
Madden 09 actually comes out August 12, which is 8/12/08.

I'm sure Brett would love to hear that he was "awarded" his Super Bowl championship... really nice choice of words there!
Mikey @ Apr 25th 2008 2:35PM
Didn't see this coming, but also doesn't surprise me because of Madden's man crush of Favre.
justin @ Apr 25th 2008 5:31PM
I just hope it's better than Quarterback Club 2000, which also had Favre on the cover. ... I use it for an ashtray
Mike @ Apr 25th 2008 7:53PM
Here's my curse prediction: Week 1, Favre's recliner falls over backwards, giving him a concussion.

i think they should make it a tribute to sean taylor and darrent williams
