Doom 4 announced, monster closets being restocked

After a nearly four year hiatus, the Doom series is back. Id Software today announced that Doom 4 has officially begun production and that the company is looking for new talent to produce the sequel. Said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, "Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth." Right now that's all we know. No platforms have been announced but, given the franchise's history, we'd expect it to show up on the 360 in some form.

Those looking to scratch that Doom itch while we wait for more info may want to check out the new series of Doom 3 novels. The first in a planned trilogy, Worlds on Fire, is actually pretty decent (yeah, we were surprised too).

A big giant "Meh" from me... The last doom sucked. Technologically superior, sure. But the gameplay just sucked. I mean, it's in the future but you have to carry around a flashlight? How about a headlamp or, get this, a flashlight on your gun!! Stupid game.

Ya, I realize there are mods to put the flashlight on the gun... Still, the game sucked.

I love how the biggest complaint people ever have about Doom 3 is the flash light... are you serious? Don't you think the developers thought of this? If you've played the game as it was meant to be played you would understand why it was made the way it was... and I loved it.

Wow dude your fuckin retarded. The flash light was purposely made so you can't use it with a gun to make it terrifying. You either choose to see what's trying to kill you or not see it and be able to defend yourself. Doom 3 is still to this day the scariest game ever created. If you don't think so you obviously didn't play through the entire game.

Sure, having to pull out the f'n flashlight every time I wanted to see something may have added to the mood of the game, but it was incredibly annoying and not plausible. It made the game not fun. If they're going to make you pull out the flashlight all the time, at least make it a lantern with point light instead of a flashlight with spotlight. It was a poor decision in my opinion. (Key words: my opinion).

And what good is a stellar graphics engine if you can't even see?

I didn't care for it either... plus, by the time it came out we were already being impressed by other upcoming engines that made everything in Doom 3 look like wet vinyl.

Still, id has done many things right in the past and I'm more than willing to remain optimistic about a new Doom game.

i really liked all of the games in the doom franchise.
although my favourite was the mod for the original doom: Simpsons Doom, man i loved that game. Shame none of the actual simpsons games have been worth playing.

Wow, we got a bunch of haters, you can not tell me that the doom 3 game didnt scare you several times, and im not talking gears of war scare you when they show you a hanging human body, i mean like, you scream and some one comes and asks you "is everything ok" and you have to make up a lie bc u dont want to look like a punk bc some video game scared you, that kind of scared, bc thats what Doom has sold me on, i know im gonna be really scared when i play. By now graphics should always be updated.

I most certainly did read it. I also read the first two original Doom novels (which weren't as good, IMO). I wanted to read them all, but they went out of print. Checking Amazon now, it looks like they're back in print though.

I've also read all the Halo books too. All of them are good, though the second one isn't as good as the rest.

I also read books that *aren't* based on video games :)
