Okay, we've had some time to collect ourselves after watching the new
Gears of War 2 gameplay video (hyperventilation FTL) and decided to analyze the crap out of it. Posted after the break, we compiled a rather complete list of new
GoW2 facts, tidbits and information we discovered after giving the latest video a good watching analysis. And wouldn't you know, we actually learned a lot! Click
towards the break to view our list and feel free to comment telling us if we missed something. We have a feeling we're going to love chainsaw duels.
Things Learned From Gears of War 2 Gameplay Trailer
- The Locust now have the ability to sink entire cities with giant emergence holes.
- To defend against the Locust onslaught, the COG transport vehicles called Derricks bring tunnel machines called Grind Lifts to Locust occupied areas. Underground combat ensues.
- Campaign level act one, chapter three is named "Assault".
- Reavers are back for GoW2 and they are trouble.
- Both the cover system and active reload look to stay true to their Gears roots.
- Overall combat is much more open and expansive, it truly looks like you're in the middle of a war.
- Brumaks are back and yes, you will be gunning them down. Take that Gears of War PC!
- The ability to generate hundreds of Locusts on screen looks (as we expected) to be used to set the mood of the battle and make it more frantic. Think of these hundreds of Locusts as interactive decoration.
- We're introduced to a new Lancer style weapon that shoots ammo in bursts.
- We're also introduced to a new pistol weapon that sort of looks like Halo 3's Brute Spiker.
- When a Locust falls to his knees you'll be able to use him as hostage cover.
- Locust neck snapping is now an option.
- They've added a new chainsaw animation that was seen in the teaser trailer. Basically, the chainsaw is flipped over, stuck into a Locust's back and is forced up vertically through the torso. Bloody disgusting.
- Chainsaw duels are real! The chainsaw victor is the one who can press "B" the fastest in the mini game.
- Assault Derricks pack a lot of firepower and do a pretty good job at running over Brumaks.
- Gears of War 2 is going to be incredible!

You'll be fine, man. Just rest. Cool out. Settle.
And thank for the analysis!
ArturoRRG @ May 10th 2008 2:51AM
I knew the hundreds of locust on screen were just goint to be just decorative. You can carry to much ammo.
Isaac @ May 10th 2008 2:56AM

Rell @ May 10th 2008 11:39AM

afiq tadza @ May 10th 2008 4:15AM

monkeymonkeymonkey @ May 10th 2008 4:32AM

Steady @ May 10th 2008 5:14AM
the list isn't accurate! it says the derrecks have much firepower, but in the trailer you see those litlle nasty tanks shooting 'm up. (correct me if I'm mistaken)
L33TWiZaRd @ May 10th 2008 9:25AM
Awesome video and in game footage is all ready out (5 months). Cool. I'm hoping to see more information on the multi player aspect of the game more than anything.
One more thing. Lool Away PS3 Fanbots, this one is for us :D
MDJ2010 @ May 10th 2008 5:59AM
A Brumak in act one chapter three???? Surely that means they are nothing!!!! I cant wait to see what they've come up with. Two headed Brumak anyone??
Dick @ May 10th 2008 10:28AM
Apparently Cliff said they're coming up with something that makes the brumak look like a baby.
I Excite! Very Niiice!!
Mikeawesome @ May 10th 2008 6:16AM
Another thing to note is that it looks like the chainsawing does a bit better job at slicing and dicing.
I.E. that locust just got a sliced from shoulder to waist and it made Marcus look more like Ichi.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ May 10th 2008 6:19AM
Where did you guys see the entire city sunken by the emergence hole? Unless it's just an assumption based on the amount of Locusts fighting.
SadisticHam @ May 10th 2008 8:11AM
Probably cause it was mentioned by Cliff right at the start of the video.
This is looking extremely awesome, still playing gears 1 to this day. Lets hope 2 lives up to peoples hopes.
Paulypies @ May 10th 2008 8:34AM
Cliffy B mentions it at the start when he introduces it
Killswitch On @ May 10th 2008 8:55AM
Did you even watch the video? Cliffy B says it at the beginning. Pay attention.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ May 10th 2008 9:39AM
Awww...Cliffy...
Forgive me but I just skipped straight onto the gameplay.
Intentless @ May 10th 2008 1:54PM
Its actually out of the words of Cliffy B in the intro....
vanhelsingh @ May 10th 2008 6:56PM
Cliff says it during the video
dylan @ May 11th 2008 1:44PM
they make mention of it in the intro to the video.
killergreenbelt @ May 11th 2008 7:11PM
It's in the trailer, cliffy b. talks about the game before he gives the demo.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ May 11th 2008 7:22PM
God fucking dammit...
Gloqwi @ May 10th 2008 8:17AM
You forgot something:
There is a guy named Duncan.
Jonah Falcon @ May 10th 2008 9:04AM
You forgot to mention Marcus can use dead enemies as human shields.
Killswitch On @ May 10th 2008 9:10AM
I think this game will be good. Maybe even great, but that depends on how much you liked GOW.
I dont think there will be too much different here than there was with the original. Sure a few things added and maybe a couple minor things tweaked to be better this go around.
However, there are some things that we should expect that maybe arent so good. The game is going to be about as short as the last one. Im not saying that as fact but theres got to be a reason that games like Halo 3, COD4, and others are as short as they are. Its either laziness or the maybe the capacity of the DVD format. Who knows but dont expect a lengthy campaign. I wouldnt expect too much different in multiplayer either. Im sure theyll fix some issues and maybe add some options but I think for some reason they will be limited to what they are able to improve on in the online. Theres not going to be any 60 man online battles.
Either way im sure itll be a great game. But I think within the next year or two, we are going to start seeing the high point for the 360's capabilities. I think it will become more noticeable and eventual a once favorite developer will spill his guts and say, "hey guys, sorry, but weve reached the limit on this console, wish we could do more but we just cant with the 360"
I sure hope more can be squeezed out of the 360s capabilities, but I doubt any vast improvements will be made. And about now im starting to really wish MS incorporated and damn HD format into their system from the start.

i dont know how many times this has to be said for people to hear & understand it:
DISC CAPASITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT THE X360 IS CAPALE OF!
The hardware deals with the graphics & such, the disc mearly holds the data.
& if you think disc capsity is a huge issue, then how can a huge game like Fable be compressed from 600-800GB to fit on a DVD? no joke Peter Molyneux said it himself in one of his latest Fable 2 DevDiaries.
dont forget that the largest game out there is only about 12GB - Kojima saying 50GB is not enough is just stupid, if he compressed the audio into Lossless audio, that would probably save half the space, & not to mention the fact that he uses FMV cutscenes. Dont mean to have a rant, but that just a hugh waste & ppl seem to believe him blindly.
Doom3killer @ May 10th 2008 10:36AM
actually most people don't believe him
Intentless @ May 10th 2008 1:57PM
Last I checked there were some actual studies shown that a 8-10 hour campaign is best for FPS. Anything shorter is def not enough but any longer and individuals began to lose interest...
Vcize @ May 10th 2008 2:02PM
A 40-hour FPS campaign would be mind-numblingly awful, no matter how good the FPS was. Those games just don't work for longer than 10-15 hours max.
What is this nonsense about disc capacity? It's not like FPS' being put out on blu-rays on the PS3 are 40 hours. They are the same length as on any other system...
Gamertag: GOPAL892005 @ May 10th 2008 9:39AM
#Capable : )
MDJ2010 @ May 10th 2008 10:10AM
Nice job on spotting your own type, btw I totally agree with you. The other thing I wanted to add against what 'Killswitch On' said is that by the time developers do make that decision that they have taken the 360 as far as it goes we will be moving on to the next gen anyway. Im amazed at how anyone can be downbeat after watching this video, well apart from Sony lovers that is. And no there arent going to be 60 man online battles, i dont know anyone that would be stupid enough to believe that there would, but at the same time you couldnt discount that there could well be 8 vs 8 team, which to me means only one thing, twice the crazy fun I had with GOW multiplayer in the first place. Bring It On!!!!!
MDJ2010 @ May 10th 2008 10:11AM
#Typo - can't believe I made a typo on the word typo, irony anyone?
Doom3killer @ May 10th 2008 10:34AM
that's awsome
Jake @ May 10th 2008 10:38AM
Yawnfest, does not look much different from the last Gears 1.
I'm looking forward to Resistance 2, the gameplay I say for that outclasses this 10fold.
Tony @ May 10th 2008 11:03AM
Resistance 2 looks cool and I would certainly like to play it when it comes out, but honestly if this 3 minute trailer of one stage in GoW2 lets you decide on what the game has to offer in its entirety, then I don't know what Resistance 2 information you're getting. Apparently more than anyone else.
The same complaint could easily be put towards that game, aside from maybe the basic info of the "mini-battles" in the 60 man fights.
Either way, when you come to a 360 site, dis a game for it and then talk about how great a game that won't even be on the 360 is, it's extremely hard to take your comment at face value to begin with. So I'm not sure why I'm even bothering.
webster1990 @ May 11th 2008 4:32PM
are you effin crazy, resistance 1 was shite.
no matter how many people can play at once it can't be much better. 60 people playing a poor game, is still a poor game.
insomniac should stick to platformers
warrenpeace @ May 10th 2008 11:04AM
WTF is a 'Resistance 2'? An exercise machine?
decadeofevil @ May 11th 2008 11:33AM
yeah its from the makers of the gazelle and tony little is gunna be hawkin that thing at 3am.. this time with extra eye liner!!!
Giancarlo @ May 10th 2008 11:17AM
i don't know if anyone noticed, but the neck snappin doesn't seem to be an action that you can do by pressing a button. looks like it's just an animation that you initiate by walking to that ledge (maybe its only in this level?)
Wizxon @ May 12th 2008 10:20PM
Looks great, GoW is the only game that I would buy a 360 for.
Yes that does mean I have a PS3, but I've played GoW and I liked it. Who knows, maybe I'll snatch a 360 up for GoW 2.
Dan @ May 10th 2008 11:57AM
I thoroughly enjoyed GOW as a casual fan of the franchise but I think this is going to be much better for both hardcore and "softcore" fans alike.
