Gears of Wars 2's storyline said to rival BioShock's

Now, we must say, we're hugely optimistic that Gears of War 2 will deliver come November, with the features and badass'ness that Epic has already promised, but to say its storyline will go beyond BioShock's? Well, that just seems super ambitious. Though, we have full faith in the Epic crew, so we say go get 'em guys. Write your Epic hearts out and deliver an emotional Gears experience that we yearned for last Emergence Day.

Big Daddies/Little Sisters in Gears 2 CONFIRMED.
But seriously, what a stupid comment to make. I'll believe this when I play it.
JAmerican @ May 22nd 2008 7:32AM
BTW in Gears 2, Chainsawing a Little Sister to harvest her is an option. LMAO! You'll have Chainsaw/Drill battles with the Big Daddies!
Etchasketchist @ May 21st 2008 1:44PM
Lemme guess, there's going to be this pretty girl and at one point the bad guy's going to kill her and then the other guys will get totally pissed and shoot the bad guy in the face.
Hope I didn't spoil anything for anybody.
Royale @ May 21st 2008 1:56PM
Damnit man! Come on!
Benjamin09 @ May 21st 2008 1:59PM
In the face!!! Sweet.
I don't care if Dom takes a crap on the bad guy's chest, I still going to buy it and most likely love it more then the first.
Ben! @ May 21st 2008 2:00PM
What if the guy was, like, your FRIEND though!? What about that, man? CRAZY!
RudyHuxtable @ May 21st 2008 1:48PM
I can't quit you, Dom.
marauder800 @ May 21st 2008 1:49PM
I'll believe it when I see it.
SadisticHam @ May 21st 2008 1:49PM
Yup, this game officially has to much hype. It'll never live this down lol
Really can't see it coming true.
Sonny @ May 21st 2008 1:50PM
Can't wait!
I think there is a lot of room for great things to happen in the GoW Univerise
Bah. @ May 21st 2008 1:58PM
Only on the internets would such an ignorant statement be repeated and supported.
Gears is about as deep as a puddle.
Ben! @ May 21st 2008 1:58PM
The thing about this is that it's so fucking completely unnecessary. I'm sure there were some ridiculous people decrying the original GoW's lack of a deep storyline, but why would it even need one? It's not what the game's about. Bioshock's story was so integrated into the game that you really felt you were participating in it at every moment. The fact that they're even shooting to match or top that is a little bit concerning to me, since it has nothing to do with what made the first GoW so great. Stay focused and keep your priorities straight.
Patrick @ May 21st 2008 3:03PM
Agreed. Does GOW2 even need a good story?
emirabal @ May 21st 2008 1:58PM
I have been a firm believer in epic and GOW since i played it, i truly believe there is an underlying story that has not even been touched upon yet. Kind of like prison break (The TV show) there is something else going on behind the scenes.
Raheem @ May 21st 2008 1:59PM
Ah to see Marcus exploring Fontaine's Fisheries.
Royale @ May 21st 2008 2:00PM
No way in hell. Gears and Bioshock are two completely different types of games. I am looking forward to the expansion of the Gears story line... perhaps some book tie in? They should just make a good solid "action" story line... add some emotion sure, whatever... but don't try to compare it to Bioshock.
gechidan3000 @ May 21st 2008 2:01PM
i hope it keeps some of the cheese
Nintendo is Fail @ May 21st 2008 2:15PM
This game sucks. The first one was ok but that was before Halo 3 and CoD 4 came out. I can't believe this is the only interesting game coming out for the Xbox 360 until the end of the year
TORO @ May 21st 2008 2:25PM
I beg to differ, there were multiplayer issues that hampered the game, but it looks like these will be ironed out :)
Neuromancer @ May 21st 2008 2:58PM
Good thing Fable 2's not coming out this year, or Fallout 3.
Nintendo is Fail @ May 21st 2008 6:12PM
Aren't those both the same genre? Never played them and not interested in them either
SytheMaster @ May 22nd 2008 4:12AM
@nintendo is fail
Fable 2 - Third person RPG with swords, pistols, monsters etc set in the highwaymen times.
Fallout 3 - FPS RPG set in a post apocolyptic future.
So i wouldn't really say their that alike other than they both look freaking awesome!!!
Ed @ May 21st 2008 2:23PM
I'll believe it when I see it. Gears 1 had such a shallow storyline and storytelling that I'm not expecting much for Gears 2.
James @ May 21st 2008 2:48PM
They only way anybody could top this in the "I call shenanigans" department is if they issued a press release saying that the storyline in Doom 4 is going to be better than BioShock. Or Duke Nukem Forever, for that matter.
dunnypop @ May 21st 2008 2:50PM
the first one really didn't have much of a storyline. it was just a pretty awesome game.
from the previews, this game looks like it's improved the gameplay. not sure how intricate the storyline will be, since Bioshock did have a pretty decent story (besides the weak ending).
Urza @ May 21st 2008 3:27PM
I'll be happy when the story is on par with Halo.. Bioshock though?... sheesh.. they're aiming awefully high. But then again this guy's a voice actor.. so what does he know?
Stephen @ May 21st 2008 4:23PM
i'm sorry but there is no way GOW2's story will be anything close to Bioshock's. Gears of War is a a great game and all but the story is really just your average tough guys killing shit when you break it down. i have no problem with that, i love killing shit, but you can't even compare it to Bioshock.
onlypoopypants @ May 21st 2008 4:45PM
Why does everyone hold bioshocks story with such high esteem? Its really not all that complex granted the back story is there if you look for it but it does not all unfolded infront of your eyes. The reason everyone thinks this game is so deep is the plot twist that happens 3/4 through the game(avoiding spoilers). Even Ken levine said there wasnt much to the story of bioshock. So to bash gears for saying they're shooting for bioshock isnt really that big of a stretch now is it? Throw in a plot twist or two that everyone saw coming a mile away ala bioshock and your golden appearantly. Reserve your judgement ladies and gentleman.Sorry for the rant.
Arnon @ May 21st 2008 5:54PM
Agreed. BioShock's story wasn't that large... it was mainly a city underwater and you don't know why you're there(going to avoid spoilers).
Gears 1 hardly even touched the story. Also, they have a great writer for this one. I don't doubt it could become an excellent story... Cliff even said "Gears 1 was a taste of what was to really come." Meaning:
Gameplay wise
Story wise
Hobo Fight Club @ May 21st 2008 5:51PM
Not going to happen.
Easo @ May 21st 2008 6:27PM
Bioshock had a deep story? I must have missed it during all the backtracking and obvious plot twists. With that said, I expect Gears of War 2 story to be entertaining and about as deep as a mud puddle.
JRHAD @ May 21st 2008 6:39PM
Gears 1 didnt really have a story, more like an objective, like the Halo series.
monkeywithnoeyes @ May 21st 2008 7:37PM
it'll be as deep as Arnold Schwarzenegger finding his emotional side in the movie "Twins".
erivera3 @ May 21st 2008 8:07PM
Bioshock was not that great of a game, got boring reallllll fast.
Pigeon 123 @ May 22nd 2008 3:10AM
Alright, but now I totally expect the next Bourne Identity/ watership down/harry potter mixed in with the gratuitous violence and not Gears 1.5, make it like CliffyB apologizing for an abrupt cutoff then depict Epic studios sinking into the Ground with employees fighting thier way out with the most realistic fire extinguisher vs. mental anguish action since earthworm jim
MDJ2010 @ May 22nd 2008 7:24AM
Cant wait for GOW2, but better story than Bioshock? NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!!!! Although hopefully this suggests that, like Bioshock, they will have some means of telling the story asides from the basic cut-to scenes. I loved how the audio diaries in Bioshock added to the whole history of Rapture.
RashbaNor @ May 22nd 2008 7:58AM
GOW, and I mean GOW "as a trilogy" not as GOW1, has been in production for a long time now. Couple of years at least. It is possible that Epic staff developed a huge story for Gears...
Just consider this... what if they're planning, more or less, something like Georgie Lucas did with Star Wars? Episode IV wasn't too deep if it comes to story and character development and that's OK because it was calculated to be an introduction - something not too overwhelming, easy to get into, easy to swallow and get hyped up. Empire Strikes Back was more complicated, more gloomy - it could contain all the things that "series introduction" shouldn't hold because of risk of getting stuff too complicated and discouraging potential fans. I really hope that Cliff and the rest of the guys at Epic planned something similar for GOW trilogy because there's a lot of potential in Marcus Fenix and the whole "war on Locust" story.
Besides, am I the only one who thinks that Bioshock's story wasn't that great and the game itself shouldn't get so many "Game of the Year" awards?...
LLD @ May 22nd 2008 4:37PM
Why is it sooooo impossible to believe that GOW2 is trying to go for more emotional impact this time? It's all about war and war is frikken HORRIBLE, right?
(Btw, it's entirely possible that Ferro's comment has been taken a bit out of context...)
ZeroCorpse @ May 22nd 2008 11:55PM
Storyline?!?! Come on! They should just rename the series to:
"CINEMA! RUN! RUN! RUN! SHOOT! SHOOT! SHOOT! CINEMA! RUN! RUN! RUN! BARF!"
I guess that wouldn't be as catchy, though.
