Guitar Hero World Tour is officially official
Finally, after what seems like months of magazine scans confirming its existence, Activision just officially announced the next true installment in the Guitar Hero franchise (you don't count Aerosmith), originally dubbed Guitar Hero IV, will now officially be known as Guitar Hero World Tour.
As expected, World Tour will add singing and drum playing to the mix, featuring what they call the best drum set peripheral EVAR, a reworked guitar peripheral and Acti promising that all peripherals will be wireless as well. With features like a Band Career Mode, online integration and the ability to record and share music, Activision is also touting World Tour's track list which they admit will be the largest list of any GH game featuring bands like Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles and Sublime.
So, now that it's official and we have some concrete deets, do you think World Tour will give Rock Band some competition and will you be checking out World Tour later this year?

I for one will not be getting this version of GH. The DLC is the kicker... GH2 and GH3 had big promises but little was delivered to the consumers. Rockband gave us what we wanted so they will get my money from here on out.
Neuromancer @ May 21st 2008 12:43PM
I think this will light a fire under Harmonix to add the ability to make your own custom tracks for Rock Band.
Competition is usually pretty good for everyone involved although part of me hates to see Activision ripping off Rock Band so shamelessly.
Odog4ever @ May 21st 2008 1:12PM
My question is how many people are going to spend the time to make custom tracks? And more importantly how many of them are going to be good?
qbix @ May 21st 2008 12:43PM
If their drumset is compatible with Rock Band, which I really doubt, I might buy it (the drumset, not the game). Otherwise, not interested.
Tony @ May 21st 2008 12:48PM
They pushed so hard against guitar compatibility that I'm very hesitant on this because of the new drum design. An additional pad does not bode well for that sort of thing (not to mention an additional one on top of that for Konami's game).
You think they could come up with a name for this that wasn't present in Rock Band already. I know World Tour is fairly generic, but it still comes off poorly.
tan @ May 21st 2008 12:48PM
yes!
i will be buying this and alll the peripherals!
and im getting rock band this friday too!
music games FTW!
this looks amazing:)
baby sea tuna @ May 21st 2008 12:53PM
Linkin Park and The Eagles? Thank God! GHIII didn't have nearly enough shitty bands in it! Hopefully when they say Van Halen, they mean the *real* VH...you know, the Sammy Hagar years.
Yeah, no. Sorry Activision, Rock Band has stolen my heart, and my money, and will continue to for the forseeable future.
Etchasketchist @ May 21st 2008 1:17PM
Sammy Hagar? That's a joke, right?
Ray @ May 21st 2008 1:54PM
I really hope he was joking. There is no Van Halen without David Lee Roth.
E.J. @ May 21st 2008 2:03PM
what i'm actually afraid of is the bands' exclusivity. activision locked up aerosmith and no doubt's, i'd hate for the Eagles' properties manager to be dumb enough to agree to the same.
more platforms = more money = more band awareness.
Cutty @ May 21st 2008 9:55PM
The Eagles are shitty? wow.......i understand linconln park, but the eagles are one of the greatest bands ever.......there not the best, but still one of the greatest....Hotel california on GH would be pretty sweet, and Burritos by Sublime......
BlackTye @ May 22nd 2008 4:14PM
If you think the Eagles are shitty, you should go off yourself right now. Even putting them on the same level as Linkin Park?! Just... wow.
baby sea tuna @ May 21st 2008 12:54PM
Your house must be enormous to accomodate all of those fake instruments!
baby sea tuna @ May 21st 2008 12:55PM
Yeah, that was *supposed* to be for the guy above me.
tan @ May 21st 2008 6:36PM
me?
AxFactor @ May 21st 2008 12:56PM
I will pick it up as I like music, and really as long as there aren't any songs that overlap RB, I'll pick it up.
Oh, and one more thing, I'll only get it if WE GET MORE JIMI F'N HENDRIX!!!!!!!
Really, I've been PO'd since GH2 left the man out, and every franchise since, I mean, sure, Spanish Magic Castle....nice, BUT I want some more. How can Legends of Rock only have 1 Legend? You can't pluralize 1 guy.
Cutty @ May 21st 2008 9:59PM
Seriously.....Gimmee Hendrix and Zeppelin and i will buy the game, with all the peripherals......they had me sold at sublime, but Hendrix and Zeppelin would make it the best music game out.......
James @ May 21st 2008 12:56PM
It's nice to see they finally got some damn Lenny Kravitz!
Jamatron @ May 21st 2008 12:57PM
I'm not a fan of Rock Band due to the hammer-ons with the guitar. They're really hard to read. This is all that is keeping me away from Rock Band and those awesome drums.
Now that GH has drums I will be picking this up for sure. Despite the lame video.
Syko360 @ May 21st 2008 12:57PM
Rock Band owns.....Plain and simple. Personally having gone from being able to 5* all the hard songs and beat every single Expert song on Guitar Hero II, Except Jordan (F You Buckethead ARGHHH!) I played Guitar Hero III and got to Raining Blood on Hard and decided it wasn't worth it to grind it out and try to beat Hard and then Expert. To me the note charts sucked big time and were no longer as much fun. Gamertag: Syko 360 for proof....
Probably going to rent Guitar Hero Aerosmith to see if they improved the note charts on the new games if not I predict an Epic failure...Plus as Puffin said the DLC is always a bust so Rock Band will continue to get my money.
Tony @ May 21st 2008 12:58PM
I can't believe no one has commented on how fucking stupid this video is either lol.
Odog4ever @ May 21st 2008 1:11PM
I comment: This is the douchest trailer I have seen in a long time. Seems really forced and desperate. And they are totally off beat which out of place for a trailer about a music game.
I would have been ok just seeing people playing in a living room.
Matthew @ May 21st 2008 1:21PM
Completely awful video. Seemed very rushed and had no video of the actual game play, which would've been more interesting than a bunch of hype statements and people who had no groove.
And did anyone notice just how much that one girl just stomped her feet while playing?
tan @ May 21st 2008 6:39PM
the rock band uk advert is just as bad.
dancingtosirens @ May 21st 2008 1:28PM
This is the stupidest thing Ive ever seen.
I really lost any respect I had left for the GH franchise and those behind it (which wasn't much), but seeing them blatantly rip off everything that mad Rock Band awesome really seals the deal with me.
Shawn Lebert @ May 21st 2008 1:31PM
Let's just keep on copying Harmonix.
d @ May 21st 2008 1:38PM
rock band is good for drums, guitar is crap bass is boring singing is fun but its singstar so all rock band has done really is introduce drums to the consoles now gh will come along with all ready good guitar and good bass and make drums better and the singing will be what it is fine so this will rival rock band until rock band fiixes their shit then trhat will rival gh its a learning buisness and were testing their products till its perfect
E.J. @ May 21st 2008 2:25PM
dude, go to english class. you're late.
zourskittles @ May 21st 2008 3:23PM
The Dictionary, The period, and The Comma.
Please, do not be afraid of them.
samaral70 @ May 21st 2008 2:09PM
Linkin Park? I'm there!
Mike @ May 21st 2008 2:15PM
You Rock Band people make me sick. The game sucked. Awful original soundtrack. Guitar was so easy it was a joke. Guitar Heros layout and soundtrack are 10x better than Rock Bands. The only thing rock band has on GH is the DLC. Rock Band is only fun if your playing with other people. Otherwise its gay. Guitar Hero franchise needed to step up and create more instruments and now they are gonna kick Rock Band in its ass. Um so what they are not making their instruments capable with Rock Band can you blame them? Hello!?!?! $$$$$. Plus its gonna be wireless. F*ck wired.
PS Sammy Hagar blows.
Danny @ May 21st 2008 2:24PM
Wow. Mike, you're one angry kid.
"Must... go... out... of... my... way... to... express... my... hate!"
Matthew @ May 21st 2008 2:25PM
Deep thoughts, brought to you by a GH fanboy.
Rich and compelling.
Glenn @ May 21st 2008 4:59PM
"Guitar Heros layout and soundtrack is 10x better than Rock Bands."
Huh... from that trailer, I saw no gameplay, and no announcement of all the songs available. Did I miss something?
It's one thing to be a fanboy. But it's another thing to be a fanboy WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING WHAT YOUR A FAN OF.
Jonman @ May 21st 2008 2:33PM
F*@# 'em.
Since Acti's point blank refusal to play ball over instrument compatability, I've declared them a shower of bastards, and will be boycotting their games from here on out.
Rock Band, therefore, FTW, by default.
tan @ May 21st 2008 6:45PM
no one really knows who's fault it is though that the rb guitars dont work with gh...
because gh came out before the rb guitars did, so we don't know do we?
Tiggle @ May 21st 2008 2:41PM
I prefer the GH series for the single player experience. Better songs and better presentation. RB's single player experience wasn't there. I haven't been able to finish the band world tour because my wife and 90% of my friends don't play games. The friends that do play games live a state away... which will be perfect when they update Rock Band to include Band World Tour Online. I think that update is called Rock Band 2.
dunnypop @ May 21st 2008 2:48PM
"Do What Rock Band Did in their First Try!"
seriously... Rock Band has a huge reply value and the amount of DLC so far is very impressive and affordable. I'm sure when Rock Band feels like making an update, they probably would be able to do a battle of the bands as well.
On that note, how will World Tour be like? very similiar to the great single player / co-op modes they had in GH 2 & 3 (sarcasm).
NitroFrost @ May 21st 2008 3:03PM
I would only buy if the drums and mic work for GH but I highly doubt the drums will which is gay damn money mongers.
zourskittles @ May 21st 2008 3:26PM
Well if you buy this GH, I'm sure the drums and mic would work. I mean it's for the game why wouldn't it work? Unless you meant the Rock Band drums and mic, in which case, please clarify that.
Adam @ May 21st 2008 3:07PM
I don't really agree with most of the people that said that it looks terrible.
To me, it looks better than rock band, but very similar.
I do like the look of the drum set, but I dont know.
I have a wii, so i cant get rock band, so i might get this game. Don't know, we'll see what happens.
zourskittles @ May 21st 2008 3:27PM
Sure you can't get Rock Band now, but you can still get Rock Band first.
"Game: Rock Band (Wii)
Release Date: Jun 22, 200""
-Gamespot
zourskittles @ May 21st 2008 3:28PM
oops, well I'm sure you can assume for yourself its 2008 and not 200
Chris B @ May 21st 2008 3:37PM
you mean if the rock band drums are compatible with GH?
i might get GH:WT if the rock band drums SOMEHOW work with it. if not, there's no way in hell i'm buying another drum set.
Chris B @ May 21st 2008 3:39PM
that was supposed to be way up there...anyway yeah i'll only get it if the old RB/GH guitars and (more importantly) the drums are compatible.
if not, RB FTW.
ccc @ May 21st 2008 3:39PM
This is gonna be the best music game ever made.
That trailer was corny as hell though and I'm tired of these games editing out the profanity.
How about an uncensored version for all of us that are of age to enjoy?
If RB tries to compete with this game, its only answer is going to be to shovel out a RB2.
In which case will pretty much screw everyone that bought the loads and loads of DLC and should be viewed as a big slap in the face to the customer.
Unless, they make the DLC compatable with the newer version.
But to do that RB2 would have to run exactly the same as RB1 which is doubtful.
However, GHA has a chance to do this with purchased songs from GH3 as GHA is more of an expansion upon the third installment and gameplay should remain the same.
Tegolin @ May 21st 2008 4:44PM
So they are going to have a 170 song setlist?
Rock Band won me over with the infinite lasting appeal with DLC.
Tegolin @ May 21st 2008 4:55PM
Also,
How is custom songs going to work?
Upload?
If its just songs on the disc, thats stupid.
TwistedD00M @ May 21st 2008 5:35PM
If they have What I Got by Sublime, I am going to play this ALL THE TIME!
Mike @ May 21st 2008 6:52PM
Well Glenn at least I can spell. 2nd Im not talking about the GH4 tracklist which I can say without seeing it will be better than Rock Bands, because GHIII was. And Rock Band's cover songs completley blow. They ruin the true classic rock songs. Well I am a fan of GH series, since Ive bought rock band also to try only to sell it on Ebay 3 weeks later and 20 bucks short. Waste of time and money.
