Video: Shiny Xbox prototype in Ninja Gaiden II
After playing a few hours of his pre-release copy of Ninja Gaiden II (come one Microsoft, where's our love?), Godfree of Gamertag Radio found a shiny Xbox Easter egg. Hidden behind some wood paneling is what looks to be the prototype for the original Xbox, the shiny metallic box that never came into existence and was instead replaced by the big black Xbox we've all come to know and love.

Well, that is also the design of the ship gift that the original Xbox team got for releasing the console.

Hey cool, that thing was in Ninja Gaiden Black too. It appears to be pretty useless this time around since you can't visit it at any time and it doesn't refill your ninpo.
LuckyEMS @ Jun 1st 2008 5:27PM
from the looks of it, it gets rid of the health that doesnt regen
Insomnious @ Jun 1st 2008 8:34PM
You n00bs! :-)
It was in the very first version on NG, in some alley-way across from the bar in the city (no idea what the names are). It refilled your ninpo and health, which made it perfect for saving up essence for all the weapon upgrades later in the game.
Good to see the developers have a sense of humour.

This was an early design that was rejected for ergonomic reasons.
DarkNightRJ @ Jun 1st 2008 4:58PM

Aegis @ Jun 1st 2008 9:16PM
If this was in the PS3 version, I'd die happy.
:p
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:06AM
Wait, there was a PS3 version? You couldn't be talking Sigma could you?
Aegis @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:03PM
No, I'm just an idiot who made a mistake.
bigC24 @ Jun 1st 2008 9:52PM
That Xbox is also an item in DOA4 during Survival Modes.
Brian Fantana @ Jun 1st 2008 10:31PM
Wow. Isn't that the same one that was in Ninja Gaiden, NG Black, and Team Ninja volleyball game?
Whoopty fuckin doo.
Phil @ Jun 1st 2008 11:22PM
That's not a prototype that was rejected but rather more of a symbol for what the Xbox represented, which was that it was the [direct]Xbox. It was never meant to be a serious contender for the final design of the original Xbox.
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:07AM
Bit out of place isn't it?
Imagine seeing that in old age Japan, I'd be like WTF is that? An alien space craft?
AoE @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:26PM
Is the series set in ancient Japan now? I haven't read anything about the storyline in #2... the first one was set in modern Japan however...
