Analyst speculates Netflix's Xbox 360 partnership

Pachter speculates that Netflix has already partnered with Microsoft to offer movie rentals through the Xbox 360 based on comments made by Netflix's management during their recent analyst event. During the conference, Netflix management mentioned interest in "internet-enabled video game consoles" which Pachter believes is not only a hint that Microsoft and Netflix will partner, but that it's actually a good move for both companies. "The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions" says Pachter. "The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure." Can you say IN-TER-EST-ING?

I will use it if its in Cananda. Why is the NG2 demo impresions not on Itunes?
Trogdor @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:22AM
I hope this is true, but Pachter is usually way off so I'm not holding my breath.
haukke @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:28AM
the article mentions both netflix customer and xbox live customers....does that mean you need to have a netflix subscription and an xbox live subscription....
Neuromancer @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:36AM
I would assume you'd have to at least be a silver Live member and a Netflix member, otherwise the service would be free and that would just be silly.
CL34N3R @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:40AM
When this was discussed in the past, it was always something that would be available to Netflix members. As a member I can already stream movies to my computer so I would imagine I could stream to the 360 without upgrading my membership. It's only $9.99 a month for 1 dvd at a time and unlimited streaming, totally worth it.

The on-demand thing from Netflix is pretty money, but I would like to see them making more of the movies available faster. If they could get newer stuff up there quickly after release, and keep it at like $10 (or they should make it less even if u want just unlimited streaming and no real discs) then they will have a nice lock on peeps willing to hook their laptop up to their TV (or stream through 360).

That's funny, since Netflix is already selling set top boxes to do exactly that. I was thinking of buying one but if this happens I won't.

OK I'm going to state the obvious. When the hell can I rent XBOX 360 games from Netflix?...!
Gamertag: GOPAL892005 @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:44AM
i wish Lovefilm would do this for us UK customers :)
webster1990 @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:26AM

CharleyTony @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:48AM
xbox 360 does need more features in order to stay competitive with the ps3 (IMO)
this would be a good start...
hope they have a huge fall 2008 update too..
why not have PIP (picture in piture) videochat over all games ... ?
Gemini Ace @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:51AM
I'm ready for this. Give it to me, M$!
I love Netflix. I updated my account this weekend since I got a PS3 and now half the movies in my queue will come to me on blu-ray. Freakin' awesome!

Not if you have a MacMini and DVI / HDMI port on you TV.
Vcize @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:01PM
What does a mac mini have to do with anything? Any computer that has VGA out or DVI out to a TV with VGA or HDMI in works fine.
Personally, I built a dedicated HTPC but before that I was using my desktop with a bit longer cable run just fine.
CosmicNeurotica @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:20AM
Yeah I could care less about streaming the movies, you can already do that anyway on to your computer. What I really want is the ability to rent games from netflix!
mattydread @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:27AM
I just want the 24hr window of viewing time after the start of a movie rental increased to atleast 48hrs. Or atleast let me just renew the current download I have and not make me re-download an HD movie. My point being, I hope Netflix's involvment improves the overall video rental experience on XBox Live becuase right now it's OK at best, and not just give us a second source to subscribe too. (TV show downloads are great though IMO)
Big Wizz @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:46PM
That is how it is on Xbox now. You actually have to delete the movie, otherwise, just pony up the MS pts again and you can watch right away.
Deck @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:28AM
I totally hope this is the case and that Microsoft and Netflix really have partnered up.
This however.. is coming from Pachter. And we all know how dead on he always is. *rolls eyes*
Jcarpio @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:38AM
You all are talking about this option like it's a future feature.

The downside is that it's vista home premium and vista ultimate only.
I've had this for two weeks now and love it.
diamondxp @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:05PM
Damn Nice find I have yet to get it to work but if it does I will be a happy MOFO.
Jcarpio @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:08PM
What problems are you running into?
Jonah Falcon @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:57AM
Rats. Patcher said the deal is done? Guess it's never going to happen.
DjDATZ @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:26PM
LOL...SO true.
Vcize @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:59AM
If they would stream in HD and keep the on-demand stuff up to date quickly with new releases I would definitely pick up a netflix account for this, even if it required having one of the more expensive ~$20/month plans.
Sadly though, I doubt either of those will happen anytime soon even if this rumor is true.
mernmern @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:53PM
What is the file size for an HD movie download?
nick @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:22AM
First of all, Netflix itself back in February announced that it was looking to expand onto game consoles, in addition to set-top boxes
Some surveys floated around some time afterwards also mentioning Netflix, the 360 and PS3.
Last year, if I'm not mistaken the person that ran or started Netflix had joined Microsoft's board.
Also, Netflix has always used Microsoft's technology for streaming their movies to a PC, and later announced they were going to use Microsoft's Silverlight. Mac support is supposed to be forthcoming as well.
I don't think it's ever been a question IF this was going to happen, it was a matter of WHEN and figuring out HOW it's going to work.
