Star Ocean: The Last Hope announced for Xbox 360 [Update]
Update: An original trailer, using some of the clips in the footage above, for Star Ocean: The Last Hope (then referred to simply as Star Ocean 4) debuted with the PSP release of Star Ocean: The First Departure. This in mind, we can safely say the new RPG will be multi-platform (to be clear, Star Ocean going multiplatform is our uneducated guess, not a confirmation).
Combining the West's love of space marines and the East's love of effeminate heroes, Square Enix and Tri Ace have announced that Star Ocean: The Last Hope will hit the Xbox 360 in 2009. The fourth in the popular Japanese role-playing series, Star Ocean: The Last Hope marks Microsoft's latest attempt to make a splash in the Japanese gaming market.
Taking its heroes from a dying Earth and into deep space, Star Ocean: The Last Hope is the first established series brought to the Xbox 360 from popular publisher Square Enix since it introduced gamers to a ... somewhat ... hi-res edition of Final Fantasy XI. Based on the trailer above, the title looks like it could be an epic and hopefully gamers in the East will agree.

Haohmaru @ Jun 10th 2008 11:28AM
Fail. Never played a Star Ocean game, have you?
Lance @ Jun 10th 2008 10:00AM
Star ocean was NEVER Final Fantasy in space.
Dralthi @ Jun 10th 2008 10:40AM
Wow...Two JPRG's for the 360 that pique my interest in one day? How's this possible?
Can't wait to see what the gameplay looks like. Hope it's good!
BlackFreefall @ Jun 10th 2008 10:46AM
I'm glad that the 360 is getting more RPG games. Is not just a FPS console. Although there is nothing wrong with that. :)

I'm confused...because there's a PSP Star Ocean, you can safely say SO4 will be multiplatform?
Even when Square Enix themselves told IGN that they have no idea if it's going to PS3? "Maybe we will, maybe we won't."
People all over forums are linking to this saying "Look! It's for PS3! Even Xbox360Fanboy is admitting it!"
This update doesn't make sense.
And on the same note, the MGS clip about the change disc isn't a jab at 360, it's at the earlier mulitple disc Metal Gear Solid. Even fanboys at the PS3 Gamefaq forums are saying it.
X3F is a mess.

Why is the fate of the world always resting on the shoulders of overly-fashion-conscious teens? ;)

So this is what you get when a bunch of Japanese Trekkies grow up. Did anyone catch the music? And the font on the logo??
SharpBlade @ Jun 10th 2008 6:29PM
Agreed Johnathan. Is this site really run by 360 fanboys because it doesn't seem like it. You know PS3fanboy would take this opportunity to shoot one across the bow of the SS Xbox 360.

*I've* played Star Ocean before, and this looks more like Final Fantasy:In Space, rather than Star Ocean. I lost hope for it when I saw the cherub-like Cloud lookalike in the trailer...
Haohmaru @ Jun 13th 2008 10:42AM
Are you SURE you've played Japanese RPGs before? Because if you have, you should know you're going to find almost as many spiky-haired anime-inspired protagonists as there are in a single episode of Dragon Ball Z, both before and after FFVII. It's Star Ocean.
Arnob @ Jun 14th 2008 1:59AM
yup, still can't tell the gender of the lead character of a square game...
Sollaf @ Jul 7th 2008 2:16AM
Ok if you have ever played a single Star Ocean game you would know that there are two lead charters, one male one female. In every on, granted 3 was a little rough because you didn't get soffia back till almost the end of disk one.
Oh, and scallion This is not Final Fantasy in Space
#1 Star Ocean has always incorprated a Free Form Battle system or in other words you have complete mobility while fighting, Star Ocean One pionnered this system and showed off its power, the only final fantasy game anywhere near that is Crisis Core.
#2 Every Final fantasy game is on a completly diffrent story line I.E VII and VIII not VII Crisis core or derge.
#3 Craft Items and non Combat skills are in every Star Ocean in one Way or another, allowing your person to really grow and change every time you play the game, unlike Final fantasy
#4 There are multiple diffrent Endings for evey star Ocean depending on the members of your party and the emotions of them, allowing for a truly unique style of game play.
So in conclusion This is not Final Fantasy in Space.

I really hope Star Ocean 4 is not only for the damn XBox 360. Because I have no interest what-so-ever to buy that system. Also Star Ocean 3 was on the PlayStation 2, I don't see why they would not put number four on the PS3. I think I would die if it just came out on the fricken 360, it just would not be right.
