MLG debuts newest Halo 3 map 'Cold Storage'

Bungie's own Lukems and Shishka unveiled the new map yesterday and let MLG San Diego attendees watch a few MLG Pros duke it out in the chilly new map. Of course, details are super duper scarce seeing that Bungie hasn't formally announced Cold Storage outside of the MLG event, but we do know one major piece of info about the map. We know that Halo 3's Cold Storage is a pretty strict remake of one of Halo: CE's most popular close quarters maps Chill Out. Crazy huh? And to keep your new Halo 3 map salivaters salivating, you can jump over to MLG.com to view a few off-screen pictures of Cold Storage in all its awesomeness. Now we wait for more Bungie approved details ...
[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

T-BoNe254 @ Jun 15th 2008 1:18AM
lol i almost decided to buy the legendary map pack yesterday...but with this im sure it wont be too much longer till they are free...
Josh @ Jun 15th 2008 9:11AM
Nope. They said in one of the Friday Updates that the Legendary Map Pack would -Never- go free.
offday @ Jun 15th 2008 10:02AM
^^^
Sweet. Way to piss off all your loyal fans who bought the first map pack. Bungie sucks.
TheSnax @ Jun 15th 2008 11:20AM
I remember the comments about the legendary map pack not becoming free were very sarcastic in nature. The exact quote from that bungie update is, "There are no plans that we are aware of to make the Legendary Maps free, ever." The "ever" at the end should be the tip-off.
Doug @ Jun 15th 2008 1:05PM
The map Cold Storage was very cool. It's a smaller map, which is good. It's a lot more basic than Epitapth, more meat-and-potatoes than the Legendary maps, not as pretty, but a lot more functional. It's a sleek, Halo 1-graphics-like arena. There's a big main area and ramps above to an upper area, as well as teleporters... lots of power weapons--sniper, rockets--and power-drainer, bubble... pretty much the kitchen sink.
Cold Storage looks 100% done. They played all over the map for ten minutes on a 50-kill slayer game... doesn't look like there's anything left to do on it.
UNSCleric @ Jun 15th 2008 1:20AM
Why? Why this map? If they're going to remake maps, remake the ones that everyone is screaming for:
Coagulation/Blood Gulch
Headlong
Boarding Action
and a few others I can't remember.
I have NEVER seen anyone say they wanted a remake of "Chill Out" and I am on the Halo 3 boards at GFAQs, and Bungie.net quite a bit.
There's no reason Blood Gulch/Coagulation shouldn't have been in Halo 3 to begin with.
Dragod @ Jun 15th 2008 2:49AM
Chill Out is one of Halo:CE's most popular maps... I really hope you were being sarcastic because Boarding Action was a joke of a level. Headlong is nothing but an obnoxious BTB map, and Blood Gulch has already been remade once -- It won't happen again.
We need Midship, Sanctuary, and Prisoner... And maybe Ivory Tower.
II Heretic II @ Jun 15th 2008 6:47AM
This UNS guy has to be joking, yes?
offday @ Jun 15th 2008 9:10AM
I agree. Chill out was ok. But who honestly wanted a re-make?
I want a re-re-make of Hang Em' High. It was almost a waste when it was released for Halo 2 so close to Halo 3's release.
Josh @ Jun 15th 2008 9:18AM
Boarding Action was fun for all of 10 minutes trying to figure out where each teleporter took you but that is it. It would need a drastic overhaul to become a Halo 3 map. Such an overhaul would have to be so great that people would bitch about it not being BA anymore.
Coag/Blood Gulch was already done. Valhalla is the spiritual successor. No, it's not as intricate and has A LOT more cover spots but it is still as close to Coag/Blood Gulch that we will ever get.
Headlong was good for two things: Superjumping and Team Snipes. We can't Superjump anymore (I kinda wish they would have implemented it at least in custom games. I miss messing around with them) and they won't give us back Team Snipes. So what is the point?
And pleeeeease do not let them remake Hang 'Em High again. Tombstone was horrible. The absolute worst map in Halo 2. They completely ruined my favorite CE map with it.
iHomer @ Jun 16th 2008 8:05AM
ASCENSION PLX!
James @ Jun 15th 2008 2:16AM
boarding action?
headlong?
both awful maps, they need smaller maps anyways.
Arnon @ Jun 15th 2008 2:26AM
Idc how big Coagulation/Blood Gulch is.. It's like the defining map of Halo XD
dur @ Jun 15th 2008 2:27AM
Valhalla is the Bg/Coag successor tard.
Arnon @ Jun 15th 2008 4:40AM
Seriously... Valhalla is nothing like Coagulation..
Procris @ Jun 15th 2008 9:39AM
Agreed. Valhalla is nothing like Coagulation. I'm honestly surprised Bloodgluch/Coagulation hasn't made it into Halo 3 yet.
Still i think we've had enough ports/remakes. Time for some fresh new defining maps, something that will actually keep people playing Halo 3.
UNSCleric @ Jun 15th 2008 3:05AM
Valhalla is nothing like Coagulation, and sooner of later, a true remake of Coagulation will come, just like Lockout.
Dr. Jones @ Jun 15th 2008 4:02AM
MLG's site down? Time to find some dull razors
Donald @ Jun 15th 2008 6:09AM
Tired of remakes.
tan @ Jun 15th 2008 8:21AM
in agreement 100% with you!
they should give up on the re-making of old maps!
they should produce new fresh looking maps no one would ever recognise!
that would be the best i think:)
webster1990 @ Jun 15th 2008 10:34AM
Same, i would sooner get a pack filled with new and fresh ideas not rehashes of old ones.
Solid Chief @ Jun 15th 2008 7:42AM
While many people enjoy remakes. I think the last mappack really delivered for what Halo 3 needs with remakes. Lockout provides the small arena gameplay which suits many types. Avalanche addresses BTB games and more.
In Halo 1 there were iconic maps. In Halo 2 there were iconic maps. Halo 3? There are no truly standout maps to me. I really like High grounds but when I think Halo, I think Blood gulch, Hangem high, Lockout.
THIS is what Bungie should be working on. I truly hope that the other 2 maps are 100% new.
Solid Chief @ Jun 15th 2008 7:43AM
"THIS" = Iconic maps

donato @ Jun 15th 2008 9:47AM
no standout halo 3 maps: dude, The Pit and Ghost Town are amazing
Solid Chief @ Jun 15th 2008 9:53AM
Ghost town is good =)
But its not and will not ever have the same kind of backing or constant play as the maps I mentioned before.
wickedpheonix @ Jun 15th 2008 9:55AM
they are, but his point is that when you think "halo multiplayer" you're going to think bg/lockout etc, not pit or ghost town.
I don't care if they just do 20 minutes of work to rip the old textures and map from all the old games into 1 big map pack for Halo 3, I think that would be best. Even H2's Zanzibar I feel works a bit better than what we have now.
mcatrage @ Jun 15th 2008 10:52AM
Add fall damage and health packs back and maybe it'll be worth playing again.
Sgt Barone @ Jun 15th 2008 10:57AM
can't wait for Chill Out!! thank you Bungie!
ringo7784 @ Jun 15th 2008 7:03PM
Nice i like this map, and it probably will not ever happen but me and my friends used to play Showguns (swat shotguns) on Chiron TL34 all the time even after the Halo 2 release .
also where is the love for Ivory Towers
Pudge @ Jun 15th 2008 7:34PM
Halo 3 keeps getting better and better, in 6 months it will probably hit Halo 2 awesomeness online. Personally, when I saw all the default maps for Halo 3, I was taken aback by just how horrible most of them are. The gameplay was leaps and bounds above Halo 2 (nothing touches Halo 1) but the maps made it impossible to enjoy. Bungie has obviously lost its touch with making new maps, so this is definately the right direction for new Maps. Bring back Prisoner and Damnation and Halo 3 will be right back on top of the XBL list.
James @ Jun 15th 2008 9:31PM
Awesome. Although a remake of beaver creek, turf, or headlong would be better. To be honest - I dont even remember the original and I am a hardcore Halo player.
DjDATZ @ Jun 16th 2008 9:34AM
oh well...i think i'm close to done with halo 3...i just don't have time for it anymore...lol
DJ DarkProphet @ Jun 19th 2008 5:56AM
lol, you are all crazy...
the one map that they need to re-make... the only one, is Ascension from H2... that map was so incredible. so many areas to fight and not just "guard the shield doors" like on snowbound or epitaph or most of the other maps. c'mon, you all know what i'm talking about... Ascension had two great sniper towers a huge area in the middle of the map, and many areas around the middle underneith... sure do miss it, *sigh*...
kollosson @ Jun 22nd 2008 7:21PM
i agree with the fact that they don't seem to be remaking the really great maps, ok i like blackout but for me the greatest map on halo 2 was sanctuary, it just played so well, a perfectly balanced map, i had some great games on sanctuary, i would like to see how headlong would look with the H3 engine and relic.
I get the feeling this may be the final map pack from bungie, i suppose too many maps means some just dont get any use. I dont know just what the limits are in terms of what they can implement but if they could give us a level like foundry, a forge level but more like a level editor, a totally blank canvas where you could actually build everything from scratch with a points system like in forge but the difference being that you choose the shapes of the terrain and the textures....could keep the halo 3 community busy for years.
