Rumor: Samsung releasing Xbox 360 TV this Fall

You remember the rumor that hit the interwebs yesterday regarding Microsoft allowing third party manufacturers to incorporate the Xbox 360 in other products? Well, today we bring you yet another rumor that piggybacks the third party manufacturer rumor which ultimately makes it a rumor based on a rumor that can't be confirmed. Confusion aside and simply put, Samsung is rumored to be releasing an Xbox 360 integrated television this Fall.

Coming from the guys over at MAXCONSOLE comes word that Samsung is developing an Xbox 360 built into a LCD television called the X-Series and will feature 4 USB ports, 512MB HDD and is set to release this November in both the US and Europe. Interesting, no? Our official take on this Xbox 360 TV rumor is that it's a quick photoshop job and is complete bologna. Especially the fact that it'll only use a 512MB HDD, because we don't think they even manufacture 512MB hard drives anymore. Pessimism is all the rage.

The Wii uses flash memory, seriously, when was the last time you heard of a hard drive with under 70GB of space? They don't make hard drives that small, and the hard drive is probably a 500GB one.

The wii doesn't have a hard drive, it uses flash memory.

Its possible they don't mean HDD, but 512MB memory card. OR they could have integrated 512MB flash storage.

To the person above: The Wii uses flash memory, no? It's why people are always wanting a hard drive for it and Nintendo keeps saying no.

As for that debunking this rumor, I doubt it. Obviously it wouldn't be a hard drive but flash memory like the Wii. The Arcade already ships with no hard drive so why would so little an amount of memory surprise you? An LCD couldn't fit a hard drive inside it so it would have to be flash memory. And since flash memory is still relatively expensive, I doubt they would put very much in there at all. The TV will already be expensive because Samsung (or whatever company) would have to pay licensing fees to Microsoft so why add more to the cost and potentially push it out of the target audience of college-bound students, apartment goers, and children's bedrooms?

The TV won't be big and probably won't be higher than 720p for that reason. But looking at who this sort of product would be pushed towards, what is stated sounds right on the nail to me. And honestly, this was the first thing I thought of when I read that rumor on Digg. Honestly, I think it would be a great move by Microsof so long as they push customer service nightmares off onto the manufacturer and not to their own department.

First of all, I don't think they would ship with 512 MB of memory, unless they don't want this TV (which I think is a complete rumor at this point) to play old school Xbox games. Obviously you couldn't download an Xbox Original on 512 MB, and the current 360s have a 7 or 8 GB partition for the emulation software. 360s and original Xboxes have different GPUs, one is from nVidia and the other from ATI. That's why you never see "120 GB" or "20 GB" available on a brand new Xbox...

Not particularly aimed at you Josh, but my opinion on some of the things you mentioned in your post:

A. This is a bullshit photoshopped image. That doesn't mean Microsoft isn't working on this, but this add is pure bullshit.

B. A laptop size SATA drive (like the one in that giant shell that Microsoft uses, and like the one in the PS3) could certainly fit inside an LCD. They fit in laptops that are much smaller than most LCD televisions. In fact, they could fit a ton of them into my 42" LCD.

C. Wait until those TVs RRoD on everyone! No more Gears 2 and no more American Idol! Poor Bastards!

Once again, Microsoft knows the history of Trip Hawkins and the 3DO, it knows that the open-ended model of console building has not nor ever will work, and ultimately this is just a silly rumor to get people worked up over nothing.

MS is not going to farm out the tech specs that they spent years developing and give up the control over the hardware itself. If it won't allow unlicensed controller it sure as heck isn't going to allow other companies to manufacture their own 360s. There's a reason why consoles are closed systems.

I like the idea of a 360 themed TV, especially if they made one to match my Elite. The idea of a 360 built into the TV however, not so much. There just isn't a visible market for it. Those who want a 360 already have one, or don't because they can't justify spending the money on one. That group of people definitely won't be buying this sort of product, as it will likely dwarf the price of the 360 at least 2.5x.

I'd be remiss if I said that I wasn't waiting for something like this after the horrendously branded "XBOX Ready" TVs that RCA released a few years ago, that had the *gasp* VPORT. Too bad RCA couldn't pony up the dough, and think to actually ship the cord that could take advantage of the VPORT in the box. If Joytech can do that with their 540C control center, you'd think Thomson could have done it with their product.

But if it is a Samsung, that also is unsurprising as there is an obvious partnership there, and Microsoft could have chosen worse. I don't know if I want to pick up a green and white TV, but for the right price, even if it is "just" 720p, I may give it a second look.
