No demo for you, you unworthy and too needy fanboys! Or
so says Ubisoft (not exactly word for word, but it's the general idea) in regards to offering up a pre-release
Far Cry 2 demo, because it'd be giving away too much of game. "Even if we were to give out what you played today - even if we put invisible walls around it and said, here's the demo, you can go anywhere you like inside these walls and play it how you want - that's potentially right there eight-to-ten hours of gameplay" says
Far Cry 2's creative director Clint Hocking. "I don't know too many people who are willing to give away a 12-hour game for free." Do you feel the fun getting sucked out of the room?
So, it's confirmed, no
Far Cry 2 demo love for us. Then again, it isn't like we don't have
20 minutes of game footage to garner some sort of opinion off of. But that's looking at the whole thing from a "glass half full" perspective.

So stick a time limit on the demo. It's not rocket science lol.
Grant @ Jul 12th 2008 12:41PM
my thoughts exactly, set it at 5-10 min, so people can't make it all the way across the map and discover the whole environment and such, cause that was they seem to be so afraid of.
ccc @ Jul 11th 2008 1:33PM
The main character in this game isn't even Jack Carver is it?
Neuromancer @ Jul 11th 2008 1:51PM
No it's a new guy, probably just as well in my opinion. Plus this guy has malaria.
ANTHOLOGY @ Jul 11th 2008 1:35PM
No demo, No buy.
Mr.U2 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:39PM
Ha, that's exactly my philosophy.
hi5 @ Jul 11th 2008 1:53PM
i think not having a demo is really going to hurt their sales..
I know i won't be buying.
Neuromancer @ Jul 11th 2008 1:50PM
Anyone remember back in the Wolf3D/Doom/Quake days, where the entire first quarter of the game would be given away as shareware? Man those days are gone.
The_Punisher @ Jul 11th 2008 2:03PM
Man you guys are retarded, not buying becuase of no demo??? What's wrong with you?
If you want a game, buy it.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 11th 2008 2:41PM
Well I'm going to play the logic and assuming cards here (Johnny-Combo-player-no-Jutsu GO!)
I guess what they are trying to say is: “how are you going to buy a game if you don't know what is going to be like?” or if you are going to like it (As much as I love Flamethrowers and Fire effects not every game with a flamethrower is win)
There are plenty of answers for this like:
1-Rent it when it’s released.
2-Play either Crysis or Far cry 1
3-Read reviews and then decide by yourself
The problem with 1 and 2 is that requires money and I don't know you but after renting a game I don't feel like buying it or if I buy it there is a high chance I won't play again in order to play a new release. Option 2 gives you a general idea for example if you like it you will like the sequel sort of thing or if you hated it there is a high chance you won’t like it but sometimes the sequels are actually better (Yes is weird but it happens) so is hard to approach to the actual result
The problem with 3 is that while it’s free different people have different perspectives. Some people think Assassin’s creed story is brilliant, that Alone in the Dark sucks and that breathing carbon monoxide is a good idea.
The demo is sometimes the best way to go but demos are tricky since there are situations like Time shift, the demo rules but the game it self is buggy and broken (Timeshift demo is awesome and I’m so buying it when it gets a price drop).
The_Punisher @ Jul 11th 2008 2:58PM
I know if a game will be good, and there few exceptions. If i'm not sure, i wait for reviews and friends to tell me, or ap price drop. I don't whine and say "no deal!" becuase there's no demo......
hi5 @ Jul 11th 2008 3:36PM
The first far cry wasn't that good, so why would I want to waste my time on the sequel when I have to pay (either renting or buying) to get a good impression of it?
If there were a demo, I would've given it a fair chance.
The_Punisher @ Jul 11th 2008 3:43PM
Lol, so don't buy it. I loved the first one, and honestly idc what you thought of it, or your "fair chance" BS.
Vcize @ Jul 11th 2008 2:09PM
I don't understand how they can't figure out how to make a demo that isn't 10-12 hours long. What the hell is this guy talking about.
With no demo, I doubt I'll be looking into this one much with all the other great games coming out this year.
Alex @ Jul 11th 2008 2:25PM
Burnout Paradise managed just fine.
Neuromancer @ Jul 11th 2008 3:27PM
So did Crackdown.
Gamertag: GOPAL892005 @ Jul 11th 2008 6:40PM
& Saints Row : )
Trekster_Gamer @ Jul 11th 2008 2:44PM
I can see there point. I do however wish there was a demo, heck even 5 or 10 mins of play would have sufficed but thats ok.
also on the earlier statement "no demo no buy" is total bullS****. If the game is good I will buy it.
c4v3man @ Jul 11th 2008 4:33PM
Dead Rising managed to do it. If they could pull it off like Dead Rising, they'd actually be ahead (played the demo, loved it, rented the full game, hated it). Demos are free advertising... make it happen. I'm sure they have a tutorial level at some point, even if it's a full world, I doubt everyone spawns during the training phase.
Magic Whiskey @ Jul 11th 2008 8:22PM
That's a letdown. Far Cry 2 is one of the titles i'm anticipating the most. Ah well. I'm still buying this without a demo.
Demos are great for when I'm on the fence about something or hadn't heard of the game prior to downloading it (which..heh..is RARE), but demos are just extra icing to me. I love, LOVE that it's commonplace for demos to reach the Dashboard for most games, and I'll even go as far as say that I'm glad the community at-large is spoiled with them.
I miss them when I find games for the Wii I'd like to check out (which is another RARE occurence), but I'd never go as far as to say "No demo, no buy". I'd be more afraid of the delayed demo than anything.
There wasn't a demo for Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4, (ignoring the beta testing for both) and that worked out fine.
The demo for Bioshock actually hurt the game for me; I hated the demo and made me lose interest in buying the game. I rented the game for a better feel however a few days later, and it turns out it wasn't as bad as I'd felt the demo had led on. So you never know.
Demos are nice, but just make up your mind without a test drive, guys. If you have trouble, well, that's what gaming review sites are for.
Teabag @ Jul 12th 2008 10:22AM
If Crytek made a demo for Crysis, which shares pretty much the same genes with FC, i can't really understand what in the name of drool worthy graphics is that man talking about? It is entirely possible to make a demo out of it. Put just one mission, a timer...anything. They gave the same stupid reason with Assassin's Creed but they could have easily restricted the game to a couple of side missions. There invisible walls in the game anyway! Christ!
Ubisoft wants to play it risk free. Because there is already so much hype for this game, people are bound to buy it anyway. But what if a demo changes their mind? That will be a huge loss for them. So no demo from them. I am sure AC wouldn't have sold so well if Ubi had released a demo.
Anyway, not having a demo is going to disappoint PC gamers more than us console guys. They would want to test run it to see how good their PC can handle it. Ahh, i am going to play it on the PC anyway. I got myself a new ATi 4850 just for this and Crysis Warhead. No demo surely disappoints me!
TehGuy @ Sep 8th 2008 2:57AM
They're just asking for piracy doing this. People want to know if they can run the game on high enough settings to enjoy it, and get a feel of the game, before they shell out 60$ for it.
They should AT LEAST release a benchmark tool for the game, allowing you to at least see how well it runs, and give you a small glimpse of the "wow"
