E308: Final Fantasy XIII release details trickle out [Update]

Update: Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 and PS3 will ship simultaneously in North America and Europe (although region ship dates may vary). The game remains a PS3 exclusive and will ship first in Japan.

After announcing Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 (see above) a few questions were left unanswered. The most pressing question regarded the release date and development of the title. Square Enix has just revealed some of those details in their own conference.

According to Siliconera, Final Fantasy XIII's 360 port has not been announced for release in Asia. The team is currently focusing development on the PS3 version of the title. Once the game releases in Japan, the team can then work on localization and porting it to the Xbox 360. ~~It is unclear if the game will release simultaneously for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in North America and Europe~~. We may be in for a long wait until Final Fantasy XIII lands on the Xbox 360 but who cares? It looks awesome!

Square Enix's plan to release the Xbox 360 version of the game is to focus on building the franchise utilizing the the Xbox 360's significant userbase. However, although Final Fantasy XIII has been announced for Microsoft's console, Versus XIII is still in development as a PS3 exclusive. Or is it?

Update: To clarify -- according to G4TV, Microsoft requested the footage of the Final Fantasy XIII trailer be shown from this angle.

FFXIII will always be far superior on PS3 as:

a) it was developed from the outset on that platform. Supporting 360 is an afterthought.

b) Blu-ray disc is gonna be required, I don't fancy FFXIII shipping on 5x DVD's

c) PS3 version will be out in Europe/US long before the 360 version, as the release scheduled goes: PS3 Japan followed by PS3 translations, followed by 360 development.

Funny how MS biggest "win" is an announcement that they are getting a game Sony are already getting. But not Versus. And not in Japan. And on several DVD-9s.

MS reveals even more superior dashboard (let's see what sony has)
MS reveals partnership with netflix.
MS DIDN'T reveal an eyetoy rip off. Their xbox live vision cam has been out for over a year. The eyetoy is just as much of a webcam rip off as the xbl vision cam.
MS talks about GOW2.

And as for FFXIII - we'll see what exclusives Sony took from MS tomorrow, I'll bet GOW2 won't be one of them.

Sony copied Achievements, Trophies, the in-game MP3 player, and Wii mote... probably a lot more as well.. considering that the 360 was released first.. The eye toy thing came out before the PS3.. Not really sure how your comment makes sense Jay, but yeah.. Sony's done a lot more "copying" than Microsoft lol.

They haven't even started porting FFXIII so unfortunately 360 owners will get a crappier and worse edition. The Ps3 version will be better as its been developements for a long time.

This is not a surprise given the 360s userbase (outside Japan at least and why their not bothering to port this for 360 in Japan).

Plus, many 360 owners (like myself) owned a PS1/PS2 and migrated to 360 after the failures of Sony this gen.

Honestly I was kind of expecting more from today's showing. I was hoping to hear something about a Halo game and I'm not so sure about the new interface and the avatars. Still its hilarious that FFXIII is coming to the 360 even though I'm not a big FF person.
