E308: Netflix on 360
It's been rumored before, but now it's confirmed. And in a big way, see there no extra cost for live members to watch Netflix movies via the digital distribution of XBLM. Additionally, the Netflix movies that are downloaded can be shared via the aforementioned party system. While the details were a bit scarce, the news that XBLM has as big a partner as Netflix is great start.

Holy crap. So much good news. It seems like E3 is actually depressing for anyone without a 360.
Disco Ball @ Jul 14th 2008 2:42PM
Awesome news, my 360 is getting moved back to my main TV.
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 2:43PM
This is the best news thats come out so far. I wonder how much more $$$ it will be than my regular Netflix subscription. Hopefully not much.
Disco Ball @ Jul 14th 2008 2:47PM
It's in the story above...
"And in a big way, see there no extra cost for live members to watch Netflix movies via the digital distribution of XBLM."
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 2:55PM
NICE!!! Thanks, apparently I can't read!
Sam K @ Jul 14th 2008 2:46PM
"No cost"? Surely we still have to pay a rental fee...
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 2:57PM
I take that to mean if you're a Netflix subscriber it will be free to stream movies, that's the only way I see this making sense.
marauder800 @ Jul 14th 2008 2:59PM
No ADDITIONAL cost to Netflix / Live subscribers. Confirmed on the Netflix site. Available late autumn.
Mark @ Jul 14th 2008 3:14PM
Sam, you can stream Netflix movies to a computer or that Roku box now. It's part of the subscription you pay. This just lets the 360 do that in addition to those other methods.
TST @ Jul 14th 2008 3:25PM
you can already stream it to your xbox through windows media center if you have netflix online. this just sounds like it will be an easier way (and hopefully those free for non netflix users as well)
slyst @ Jul 14th 2008 2:48PM
Digital distribution FTW!!
Syda @ Jul 14th 2008 2:51PM
Does this mean Blu-Ray (HD) flix will be streamed/downloadable content as well? If it's not quality HD, I don't really want it...
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 6:03PM
I don't think they'll be HD, someone correct me if I'm wrong though. I don't think there are any streaming HD movies on Netflix's website.
jtedesco33 @ Jul 14th 2008 2:56PM
If it is of no fee I'm sure it prolly only allows access to the watch now movies, which largely suck. There are some good view now movies but the vast majority are old as hell or suck.
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 2:58PM
Yeah I imagine it's going to be the same selection as the Watch Now movies on their website. Still though there are some good movies and shows.
Eddy @ Jul 14th 2008 2:57PM
I find two possible problems with this though
1) Hopefully we don't have to download every movie, I know it's a lot to ask, but if we can instantly stream it, it'd be 100x better
2) How much of the current Nteflix library will be available. I hope it's not like the "Watch Instantly" they have, because very few movies are under that category
but other than that, it's great, I've ben a Netflix customer for 8 months, and I don't regret a single thing.
Mark @ Jul 14th 2008 3:17PM
I'm pretty sure that it's just the Watch Instantly library. Not the latest movies, but there's certainly stuff to watch if you're looking to find something. Or you can get in to some of the TV shows they have up there if you haven't watched them before. It's not like it's costing money to do so.
MrKniceGuy @ Jul 14th 2008 3:11PM
YEEESSS!!! Rumor comes true.. a happy day for 360 owners!
jphueber @ Jul 14th 2008 3:27PM
It says at no extra cost, So SWEET. Who needs a blu-ray player when you can watch movies without buying the expensive discs. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Evan @ Jul 14th 2008 3:17PM
Netflix in Fall update! Major Nelson just announced it on his blog.
Brandon @ Jul 14th 2008 3:31PM
QUESTION::
What about Canada?? Can anyone confirm that Canadians will be able to stream from Netflix to their Xbox 360s? I see the announcement on Xbox.com, but when I switch over to the Canadian version of Xbox.com the announcement is no longer there. Does anyone have an answer to this? Or can anyone provide a link to an answer? Thanks!
Andy @ Jul 14th 2008 3:39PM
Awesome news! Now if only Netflix's "Watch Now" had a better selection.......
I'm tired of watching Karate Kid 3.
diamondxp @ Jul 14th 2008 3:58PM
Way to go MS Netflixis a great addition to the MS family.
On the netflix site is says A gold account is required. Does that mean with our gold membership we get netflix included? If so I am canceling my Dish network.
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 6:04PM
No you have to be a Netflix subscriber too I'm pretty sure.
brujagio @ Jul 14th 2008 5:12PM
Now I have a reason to get a gold subscription (they better not screw us Canadians over).
redhat @ Jul 14th 2008 4:06PM
Apparently a Xbox Live GOLD membership is required. That is extra cost above your Netflix membership. AND you have keep renewing it. I only want to watch movies streamed from Netflix. I don't want or really need a Live membership. I already paid for the Xbox360 that hardly ever is used. I don't play live online games.
SavageGrampa @ Jul 14th 2008 4:59PM
Hopefully it will be HD...
I think they're going to expand the "watch now" selection as this kind of service becomes more mainstream. People will demand it...
Neuromancer @ Jul 14th 2008 6:05PM
I don't think it will be HD, I could be wrong though
SavageGrampa @ Jul 14th 2008 6:18PM
Wishful thinking...
