Gears 2 lobby, playlists and matchmaking detailed
Last night, during the Gears of War 2 multiplayer reception, we got a chance to sit down with Gears producer Rod Fergusson to discuss all things Gears 2, specifically discussing how the online matchmaking system will work and what features we can expect. When we asked how the matchmaking system would be organized and how it compares to Halo 3's system, Fergusson confirmed that Gears 2 will "definitely have playlists", which will be separated into ranked and social / unranked matches comprised of all the different gametypes. When it comes to matching players up in ranked we learn that a player's rank wouldn't be assigned any value or military rank, instead the ranked party would be matched up based on an average of "the rank of the party". When asked about some sort of veto system in matchmaking, we were told that "in the rank system we didn't like the veto system", but they did opt for a friendlier voting system instead. Currently, how it's planned, in all ranked matches there will be two multiplayer maps to vote on then the one that gets the most votes will be played. "If there's a tie or nobody votes," Fergusson continued "we'll just pick a random third one."
Finally, as far as stats go on GearsofWar.com, don't expect too much at launch. "It [online stats] isn't something that's critical for us on day one" Fergusson admitted, though confirming that the engine does mine rich data for much more detailed stats options in the future. Rod Fergusson wasn't afraid to admit that they don't have much experience with rich online stats like say, Bungie, admitting that when it comes to the rollout and implementation of a rich online stat service, "we're baby stepping our way in."

Urgh, that sucks. I like options. I want to be able to choose my map and gametype. This is a step back in my opinion. I don't want to trade party system for less control over what I play.
ToRo @ Jul 15th 2008 7:44PM
lol i guess you were always host during the original gears huh? Party system>old gears online.
yesss!! no more host advantage! Woot!
Nick @ Jul 15th 2008 4:31PM
What are you complaining about? It says right there in the print that you will be able to select a playlist that is specific to a game type for your party to play in both ranked and nonranked matches. You're going to be able to pick your game type and have a rotating map selection that is votable just like in COD4.
Triforceowner @ Jul 15th 2008 7:48PM
I don't think I ever hosted one match in Gears in the ranked section. Also it says, "comprised of all the different gametypes." To me that says playlists will have changing gametypes each time you play like in Halo. That would suck. But I'm just being a downer, guys. Gears 2 will be great, we'll all love it, and I will learn to suck up not being able to play my favorite maps all day.

So long host shotgun. Thank you so much Epic.
Nick @ Jul 15th 2008 4:31PM
There is still going to be host shotgun. Since you have a party system, once your party enters the playlist, the management system will ping everyone and determine the best connection and assign that person host. Same thing that happens in COD4. Epic is not setting up any servers. Someone has to be host, so that host advantage will still be there. The supposed fix is that they have transferred voice and some animation responsibilities to a second server. They haven't explained whether that server will be an Epic server or a 2nd host within the playlist.

Yep that sounds great. I like the more party-centered approach... And I like that they're being honest about the stats. Aaaaaannnnnnddd I like the voting idea - sounds great. Good days ahead for gamers:)

At least there is a party system. Much better than "search for Execution, 10 rounds, on Canals....we got 2 players in here now..." for getting in ranked matches with friends.
And word on a video recording feature or is Bungie the only company competent enough to pull this off? It would be a shame if it's not included in Gears 2. The screenshot function seems very poor.
Cal @ Jul 15th 2008 2:16PM
It's screenshot only, apparently they couldn't squeeze video recording into the game and have it release this year too
Vcize @ Jul 15th 2008 2:30PM
www.myhava.com for all your video recording needs, heh.
Search for user Vcize on www.vimeo.com if you want to see some of the videos I've recorded on there (mostly Gears stuff).
yuppy @ Jul 15th 2008 2:02PM
im gonna miss being in a lobby...
Jdaman @ Jul 15th 2008 2:08PM
On the latest GameTrailersTV Rod said they will not have video recording. You can go to Gametrailers.com and look at the last GTTV if you want to hear it yourself.
Jordan23 @ Jul 15th 2008 2:15PM
the voting system sounds great!
Vcize @ Jul 15th 2008 2:38PM
So each gametype has a separate playlist, right? The only thing we're voting on is the map?
I can live with that. I just don't want to be logging in for some execution and end up playing warzone.
Playing ranked with friends without the "Ok, join War Machine first to 6 with 4 minute round duration ready....NOW" is going to be awesome.
Anticrawl @ Jul 15th 2008 2:38PM
Gay, I want to host my own room and have people search for it. I hate the matchmaking system. They could have atleast left matchmaking for Ranked and the old system for unranked. I'm sure they could have allowed us to make on the fly changes while in the game and allow parties without gimping the system.
SiKaRiO @ Jul 15th 2008 5:49PM
Could it be because you only like to play as a host? Dude, host advantage is probably not gonna work anymore. You'll live without being the host. Thanks Epic.
Anticrawl @ Jul 15th 2008 6:44PM
I like having control over my gaming experience, as do the friends I play with. My friends and I like our own type of game experience. Whether or not I'm the host of the game we are playing at a particular time has nothing to do with why I loathe matchmaking. I've never had a problem taking down a host and never had a problem dieing as a host. Not saying there wasn't an advantage, just that it didn't matter to me. What does matter is having fun in a video game designed to be fun. Matchmaking does not equal fun, it negates it.
Carma92 @ Jul 15th 2008 3:18PM
You guys. It will probably be like COD4 where it is a playlist/party system but you can always make a private host controlled room for your friends.
Nick @ Jul 15th 2008 4:36PM
Winner.
Christopher @ Jul 15th 2008 3:24PM
Is there no way to do a hybrid system? I remember in GoW 1, Epic didn't want to use Microsoft's party system and instead built the one that exists today. So, if they are returning to the MS design, have no advances been made in 2 years to allow more optimization or is that a permanent sacrifice of the 2 designs?
I like the party system but prefer the GoW 1 system. It's much quicker and easier to get into games, especially with your friends through the MS party system. However, the option to choose your map for ranked games is one of the best features, imho. Changing round duration (so people can't hide) and round # are useful too. Unfortunately, it often seems many people on Live are impatient and prefer convenience rather than choice.
Ok, so what's the definition of "the rank of the party"? You never defined rank besides what it's not, so those sentences don't really conclusively say anything about what it is. Also, does Epic have hosting servers? If not or they are painfully slow (i.e. EA), the benefits of "no host advantage" go out the door. Someone always has to host; be it a remote server or a player.
chris @ Jul 15th 2008 4:54PM
this sounds amazing cant wait
ccc @ Jul 15th 2008 5:35PM
I just wanna know if I can roll in a party of my friends in ranked or not. Oh yeah and be on the same team. This is a game friends are needed not a bunch of people that dont know you. That was one of GOW 1's major flaws.
WarmachineXsX @ Jul 15th 2008 5:38PM
i fucking hate matchmaking. i loved being able to choose which map i want to play anytime i want not get the same 2 maps constantly rotated
Eddy @ Jul 15th 2008 7:08PM
I disagree. The "vote for the map" style of playing is great. mainly because this way, all the maps are included. In GoW, the most constantly palyed maps and either Canals or Gridlock. And as fun as those maps are, I'm tired of seeing them 90% of the time.
SO all in all, we get to play every map, and enjoy what each one has to offer. Sort of like COD4.
Good game, you may have heard about it ;)
SadisticHam @ Jul 15th 2008 6:44PM
Arg i don't like the sound of that, it'll be the same 3 maps getting played and you'll never get a chance to play one of the less popular maps. -.-'
Conor @ Jul 15th 2008 7:05PM
I'm glad we're getting the match making system,It can be hard to get into full games with the lobby system and I remember in some games people would kick you if you weren't a high rank ='(
Te1vanni Guard @ Jul 16th 2008 3:03AM
I always enjoyed joining random games and having people I didn't know join them. That's why I don't like matchmaking.
Someone who I've never met before sets the BLEEDOUT TIME, MATCH TIME, MATCH LIMIT, weapons, gametype, so forth and so on.. and I can join with them. Meeting new friends with people I've never met before.
The capital letters are things you probably -won't- be able to set in your matches. Matchmaking has presets. I'm guessing the bleedout time for Execution isn't 5... or even 10.
