Rumor: Gears 2 LE includes mini Lancer replica [update]

Update: Okay, after further picture analysis, what we thought to be the mini-Lancer may actually be the metal tin being slid out of the box. That said, a loose lipped source did mention a mini-Lancer, so that's why we were accepting of the thought. Still, we wouldn't count on a mini Lancer being in the LE. Sorry for getting your hopes up.

There has been a bunch of Gears of War 2 related news coming out of E3 this week including matchmaking specifics, new footage as well as a new multiplayer mode getting revealed. But also exciting was the reveal of the Gears of War 2 Limited Edition's contents which may include some mini Lancer love.

Thanks to the kind Gamestop folks, we know that for the extra $10 price of Limited Edition admission, you'll get steel DVD case, a 48 page "Beneath the Surface: An Inside Look at Gears of War 2" mini-book, a bonus behind the scenes DVD as well as a code to unlock an in-game gold plated Lancer. Not too shabby. But if you look closer, pictured to the right of the box looks to be an included Lancer mini-replica of some sort even though Gamestop doesn't list it as part of the contents. Funny thing is that this week, during the E3 festivities, we heard from an anonymous but totally reliable source that there will in fact be a mini-Lancer included in the GoW2 LE. Take it for what you will, but we'll be dreaming our mini Lancer dreams all week long.

It looks like the lancer in the picture is just art on a steel box which is halfway slid out of its plastic outer case. The mistake is perfectly understandable though, because you guys have had a very long week.

Yeah that's a picture on the right side, not a Lancer. If you look close, you can see it's even a little enlarged compared to the Lancer on the box art.

Ugh, I JUST ordered the Fable II limited edition set...I don't know if I can afford to order this too...But if it comes with a lancer (sigh) this holiday season is going to be hard on my wallet.

i bought the LE version of Gears & plan on doing the same for Gears 2.

i wonder if the Gold Lancer can be toggled on & off - hopefully it can.

It's just an embossed case like GoW 1 and the DMC4 SE, If you look closely as you say then theres about 3-4 inches of metal beneath the saw.

I'd be a little embarrassed to be playing with a gold lancer that says I spent $10 extra on the LE edition. Not to mention it would make you an instant target.

is the regular green dvd game case inside this box?? i want that gold plated lancer and don't mind the $10 but i HATE se/le/ce cases unless they include the regular game case (ala GTA4) inside...

I'm not advocating piracy, but I'm pretty sure anyone who looks hard enough will be able to find a code for the gold lancer in no time.

Maybe even a keygen for it? Who knows.

I'm not 100% sure how keygens work but considering the code is for input on the Xbox Live market place it would be pretty hard for someone to program a keygen.

I dunno what i'm going to do. I generally just buy the standard editions because Limited/Collector editions come in ridiculously large cases that don't fit in my DVD stand. I'll probably pick up the standard copy because of this but i love game cases that are made of Tin. Bioshock, Halo 2 had great cases.

I wouldn't want a Lancer anyways they are the regular ol' boring everyone uses weapon. I stick with the Hammerburst.

Arg, just more confirmation that the lancer is going to be way overpowered in this game.

Oh well, it'll still be cool to have. It's be really sweet if they released a bunch of versions that each had different weapons on the cover and came with different toy weapons.

I guess I should have commented before the update but it definitely looked like a steel dvd case which the original lancer slip cover is over both with the same design.

Will it be just like Halo 3's cat helmet? Rumor shortages, claim total sell out, then a month or two after release Amazon can't get rid of them for the price of the non-limited edition?

I hate limited editions. anything marketed as "collectible" immediately becomes uncollectible.

If I could get my Spartan helmet wearing cat to wield the mini-lancer then we'd have something worth writing home about.
