Reminder: Gamestop's Gears of War 2 event tonight

Just in case you somehow forgot, even then we told you to mark it on your calendar and circle it twice, there's a Gears of War 2 After Hours event going on tonight at 9:30PM held at Gamestop stores nationwide. True, we've already been given the distinct honor of viewing the exclusive video clip prior to its official airing tonight, but there is also some Gears of War tournament goodness going down too. You could win a t-shirt or some Microsoft points and maybe even mingle with some fellow Gearheads. It'll be fun, we plomise. Heck, we'll even commit to attending an After Hours event in central Minnesota. We're cool enough to attend ... are you?

Well it seems like it's mainly based around the tournament and there won't be any swag for just attending. So I won't be going. Figures. I finally get a Gamestop close to my house, and the event is meh.

My wife and I might attend. One thing that caught my eye though, on the official rules it says something about the weapon swap option and how the gamestop employees are supposed to "remove" all of the power weapons. What is up with that?

Just got back, it was fairly lame. Execution, first to 1 with a 20 second bleed-out and no power weapons. But the really lame part was that it was splitscreen on like a 20" monitor (it was played on one of those little demo stations they have in the store with the controllers that have been sitting out there for a year with only like half the buttons working).

I finished 2nd in our tourney and got a t-shirt. Free stuff and it didn't take long.

I went to mine and damn it was way diff than what you guys are describing. I myself wasnt expecting it since I had previously prnted the guidlines but they werent followed at all at my GS. There were 16 people. They gave us a choice between 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 so we all picked 2 vs 2. They also let us pick which map as well so we all quickly said "Raven Down" but of course they didn't have the maps dl'd damnit :( We settled for War Machine. My buddy xXGanoBoyXx and I TOOK that fucking tourney!!! :D It went fairly quick and yes it was split screen on 2 small 20 inch demo kiosks but it was still fun. We got 2 Gears T's with the Logo on the bottom side and 2 1600MS point cards each. Got the Gears tourney bracket poster and we took a pic too. Gonna Upload on Myspace tomorrow :P Shiiit yeah!! It was at the GS in Houston on Beltway 8 and Wallisville. The manager there Enrique is a pretty cool dude. All in all I had a blast...

I walked over to my local Gamestop at 8:30. Guy behind the counter said no signed up for the tournament. So I asked for a T-Shirt, and I got one for free. I have another Gears T-Shirt from the first game, as Best Buy was giving it out with pre-orders.

Yeah, just got back too. My brother and I both went to different Gamestops near our house. Like another poster said, it was pretty lame considering that it was splitscreen on some 20" Samsung lcd tv. Not only that, but both my brother and I are about 6'5" and the controllers were extremely low to the ground. Plus, to add, both people are host. I came in first, getting both the t-shirt and gamer points. Went to see my brother and he was just finishing the tourney up. He also came in first, getting the gamer points and t-shirt. What was funny was the fact that the gamestop employee challenged my brother to a game and said he was really good.....hahaha. My brother won that game too, and walked away.

For those wondering what the t-shirt looks like, it is a black shirt with a pretty big GoW logo (red of course) on the left side hip area. There's also a Gamestop logo (or sign, whatever you wanna call it) on the left shoulder, and finally a Gears of War 2 sign on the top middle back area.

Overall, it was decent, free stuff is always good.

But yes, you have every right to be pissed at gamestop for not mentioning it.

But really, the whole thing was half assed and most of the guys enforcing it probably knew very little about Gears at all, much less the changes to the lancer with each patch. Our guy organizing it said we would be playing "Extermination" mode. Lol.

But yea, pretty much as soon as I saw they were going to remove all the power weapons, and then saw that we were playing splitscreen, I pretty much knew this wasn't going to be a "real" tourney where the people setting it up actually put any thought into it.

I went and lost.
Why did I loose?

I was on Gridlock in the open field where the grenades would normally be.
My enemy had out his shot gun and I my Lancer.
I unloaded my entire clip into him and he didn't down.
He hit me twice with the shotty from about 15 feet away and I was downed.
So why did I loose?

This problem bugged me all the way home when just before I reached my front door it came to me why I lost.
The GOW played in this tourny was the unupdated version.
If you all remember they updated the title to improve the Lancer and even out the shot gun.
This is the version of Gears I have been playing the last year and a half.

I was intent on staying away from shot gun battles in this tourny due to the sometimes random nature of the battle and hell bent on using the Lancer. As when I play the game normally, if you hit someone consistantly with a Lancer for more than 3 seconds they are down.

It never even crossed my mind that this would be the older version of Gears and I'm kinda pissed off about it and the fact that NO-ONE even bothered or thought about that factor in this event.

REALLY REALLY GAY Cliffy. I'm angry with you and mad at myself for not even considering that. I was more worried about wether or not it was gonna be a split or fullscreen event. Turns out the main factor was something not even anyone at Epic thought about or anyone else for that matter.
Bottom line, the Gears we all play on a daily bassis was very much different from the one that was at this tourny.

Yep, I realized in the first round that this was pre-patch with the uber weak lancer.

I found it better, as the super powered current lancer would've made this tournament just a bunch of endless stalemates with no power weapons.

The lancer after the first patch, but before the second, would've been just right. But I prefered not to have to replay each round 15 times because we kept getting 0-0 draws because my opponent decided to whole up behind a car or in a tower with the uber-lancer and no way to advance on him or grab a power weapon. So basically, pre-1st patch lancer was still better than the current stalemate inducing (since there were no power weapons) lancer.

Seriously, think about it. With the post 2nd patch lancer and no power weapons, someone could just run up into the tower where the hammerburst spawns and take cover on the ledge facing the narrow hallway at the top of the steps that you have to run through and there would be no way to get to him.

The current lancer downs someone in 0.7 seconds (I actually threw it into a video editor and subtracted the frames to get the 0.7 figure) of continuous fire withOUT an active reload and when NOT hosting. So on host (which everyone in this tourny was) it would've been even faster, and impossible to advance through that hallway if they turtled up there.

Yeah Vcise the tourny was very unorginized. My first match the sniper rifle and all the other weapons were there and the game type was warzone. Me and the other guy playing just agreed verbaly not to pick anything up.

But you see what I'm saying about the Lancer though at least someone understands.

As far as you go Bonzai I most definatly do not suck at this game. In fact there statisticaly should have been no way I could have lost....well almost no way.

The unupdated title really messed me up as I mentioned before I was determined to not pull out my shotty and I never did.

I went it was fun since there was only 8 people at the tourney. SO even the losers walked away with a Gears 2 shirt. I also got that deodorant they gave out LOL and a Bad Company key chain. I managed to take 4th in the tourney I only came for the shirt so I was happy with my ranking.

Went to my local gamestop and chilled with the employees and my 2 friends and my girlfriend. We we're the only people and there was 4 of us making all of us a guaranteed T-Shirt. Mind you the T-shirt is bad ass. Huge gears logo, gamestop logo, and gears 2 logo. Anyways....it was dead....quiet. lol...Only us showed. So i played with my 2 friends, laughed owned them and got free gamer points. We all laughed, got goodies and had fun. But serious....we are the only people around here who like gears apparently who are not minors....-_-;;

The monitor was a 20" CRT. Used Xbox 360 console with memory card only. New controllers :3 very happy about that. But original game no patches. I laughed so hard when they removed all the guns. I used a lancer and pistol and was happier then ever. Everyone hates original gears but i loved it. I felt weird playing on a CRT though ;_; im used to my 50" HDTV. Anyways i hope gamestop has more tournaments! I love free goodies and having fun dispite it being dead.

All of two people showed up to the tournament at my local Gamestop and I was one of them. The other was a friend who drove me there. We watched that rather disappointing video. And then moved straight into the final round of the tournament. The managers made bets on who would win with the price being who had to take the money to the bank after they closed up.
Short story short, I won. ^_^

I headed to the tourney and found out only 5 people shown up ( including me ). The four that came in were all friends so I guess it was so at least one of them would win and better their chances, but in the end, I ended up winning :D I faced 3 of them in first to 5 rounds and ended up beating 2 of them with the score of 5 to 0. The last guy only got 2 on me, but he was the friend out of the group who actually had the 360. So I won and I got alot more than they advertised: two Gears 2 Shirts, 20 bucks MS points, & 2 free pre-orders! Looks like playing gears every night payed off :D Oh yeah, one of those 5 to 0 was the gamestop manager facing me >:D

Anyway, I didn't win my tourney. There was 9 guys there including me, and they had been practicing. Not a big deal. I still got my t-shirt.

Went to the tourny here in Tucson. One of the 4 or 5 gamestops to host it.

Worst shit ever.

Terrible setup, tiny ass tv, and 4 people.

I watched the assfuck on the first tv watching my brothers screen the whole time. Also Pre-patched GOW.

Walked out with a free tshirt.

And that lame video has been on the web for like 2 days.... Even posted here I believe.

And let's be honest, whether you won or lost, isn't GOW "1 vs 1" the lamest shit ever? I've never played it that way and never will again.

It was kind of lame even though it was on some nice HDTVs. Like some people we played split screen and I got knocked out in the first round. They didn't announce they were giving out shirts to people who advanced until I got knocked out. Just left a bad taste in my mouth.

This doesn't have to do with the event per say, but... in the picture for the post, it says 30% trade in credit towards Gears 2. However, when I went to the gamestop, and asked them about it, they looked at me like I wanted to buy a rocket ship. They then told me it would only work with a coupon. Any one have better luck than me?

I went to the one in New Albany,IN...it was me,my couisin,and my g/f...And one random kid showed up lol...It was alot of fun.We didn't take any weapons off and just played around...I haven't touched GOW in over 8 months prolly...I won the points and all of us got a shirt..Good times!
