Rumor Buster: Left 4 Dead is still Xbox 360, PC only
Rumors have been swirling as to the exclusivity of Valve's upcoming team-zombie-shooter, Left 4 Dead. In its latest edition, Official PlayStation Magazine claimed a PS3 version of the game was in the works by an internal team at Electronic Arts -- distributors of Valve retail products. Attempting to confirm or debunk the rumor IGN contacted Valve's Doug Lombardi who quickly shot down the rumor, "there is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead currently in production."
Could it still happen? Sure. But as it stands it looks like Xbox 360 fans will have exclusive console rights to the anticipated shooter. That means we'll all have to deal with it being called a worthless exclusive and subpar shooter until it is confirmed for the PS3 and then have it be claimed as one of the best and biggest exclusive losses since ... oh I don't know, Final Fantasy XIII comes to mind. Just saying.

i found tone in this article dumb.ps3 owners doesn't even care about this game.it looks dumb and game play seem wash up.Sony had fall of men 2,Microsoft had gears 2 those are the only 2 shooters that are at the top of people list.this game is truly a sading.i wish they would had just cancel it and made half life 2 eps 3 and half life 3 instead.
Jeff Holland @ Aug 5th 2008 2:03PM
This is exactly what Xav was talking about... Lol. It didn't even take 5 comments.

The irony of this comment is BEAUTIFUL.

I completely disagree. This game is going to be f***ing awesome. This game might just get me to buy a new rig, but we'll see.

You're the man Xav.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 2:24PM
Half-Life 3 is actually Episode 1-3. Valve already said this in the past. It helps keep them from long development cycles (although they're really blowing the whole "Episode" part of it by releasing their games 2 years apart from one another).
If you want to play a game similar to Left 4 Dead now, though, play the Killing Floor mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. It's a hell of a lot of fun, and it plays almost exactly like L4D (although it came out years before the L4D concept even came into being).

Yes it's true.
This game is truly a sading.
offday @ Aug 5th 2008 5:31PM
Yeah. And Haze was the Halo killer that would make Xbox owners jealous.
And then when it comes out. "Man, no one even cared about that stupid game!"
erico316 @ Aug 6th 2008 12:19AM
@offday i never in my life backed haze and never believe it could be a halo killer.
Arnon @ Aug 6th 2008 12:26AM
Yup.. I was right. This argument DID start with
360: Cool! Cant wait to play it!
PS3: Who cares.. this game is going to suck anyway.
Magic Whiskey @ Aug 5th 2008 2:03PM
Yeah as always.
I tell you what I hate. I hate when you're close friends with a guy, and then when you begin to discuss video gaming, he persistently bashes your console and your gaming choices without any mitigation whatsoever. That kind of bull can really ruin friendships.
It's bad enough when it's a super-biased Gamestop kid or something you can walk away from, but it's worse when it's a buddy.
Sadly, that's one main reason I don't often speak to friends that don't own a 360. I keep in contact with them but not near as close as I do with my friends on the Dashboard.
anthonyjh @ Aug 5th 2008 5:50PM
Wow...
You good sir, need to get a fucking life.

Devin @ Aug 5th 2008 2:10PM
Not to be a troll, but wouldn't the game play better on PS3 since it supports Mouse + Keyboard? Just saying since the game was meant for PC....I find straight FPS on controller to be very hard, especially with zombies running 100mph at you....but this game will be awesome on anything so...should be fun....wonder what the achievements will be...
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 2:17PM
I wouldn't say it would be better on the Ps3, but I wholeheartedly support the opinion that FPS games tend to be stronger on the PC. I prefer the 360 controller for these types of games if I had to use a console, since there tends to be a delay with mouse + keyboard on the PS3, but overall, if I had to buy the game, it would definitely be for the PC.
Doesn't hurt that the game costs $10 less. :P
joey @ Aug 5th 2008 4:49PM
I say rumbles and triggers.
Devin @ Aug 5th 2008 4:50PM
I haven't noticed a lag with M+K on PS3, but I am also using a really expensive Logitech Bluetooth series...
Arnon @ Aug 5th 2008 6:44PM
Agreed.. Keyboard + Mouse > Console.. but if I had to choose a controller for a FPS.. the 360 wins in every catagory.
josh @ Aug 5th 2008 2:13PM
lol @ eric
that comment just makes this blog post, extremely funny and accurate
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 2:14PM
I honestly don't see the problem with it being on the PS3. It wasn't even mentioned until recently if it was going to be on the PS3, but due to the strong press it received for just the rumor alone, I think Valve would be stupid not to put it out on the PS3, maybe even for the Wii (hell, the Source engine is quite capable). I think they're just being stubborn, but maybe that's just how I see it. I just hope that when it does come to the Ps3 (everyone knows it will, just like with BioShock), I just hope they don't cause a massive blunder like last time and cause enormous amounts of bad press for themselves by letting a strong game that has their name all over it be handled by some upstarts from EA. In my opinion, the 360 benefits from the PS3, due to the fact that when companies like Criterion or DICE make a game for the PS3 and port it over to the 360, both sides benefit due to the stronger hardware of the PS3. It allows the 360's hardware to truly be taken advantage of a lot quicker than otherwise, such as with Final Fantasy XIII, which was mentioned in the article. I honestly don't see the fault in Left 4 Dead heading to Sony's system, since it's also showing up on the PC (and will be stronger for it, imho).
This is coming from a marketer and producer in the gaming industry. I don't consider myself a fanboy of anything other than gaming, since I own all three consoles and enjoy them all equally.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 2:21PM
Maybe if I did better on the grammar portion of my short essay, my thoughts would come across a little more clearly. lol
joey @ Aug 5th 2008 3:17PM
Valve just doesn't want to port L4D to PS3. Or any game for that matter.
And rightfully so, I'd rather have them developing games not porting them.
It's pretty much a given that EA will port the game.
Don't even get started on the whole if the game is developed on Ps3 then ported to 360, the 360 version will be better as well argument. Since no game in PS3's exclusive library has blown me away with graphics or gameplay, I don't see how that's possible.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 3:28PM
I said nothing about gameplay or graphics. It all comes down to hardware, and unless you're really ignorant, you have to admit that the PS3 has the stronger hardware (the 7 SPE's and BluRay drive attest to that). It's the same as if a game was developed first on the PC then ported to the 360. It benefits since the PC are on the cutting edge of technology. I'm speaking only about multiplatform titles.
I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy, but it's obvious. Both systems have their own great games, however, so I hope you understand where I'm coming from. =)
Anticrawl @ Aug 5th 2008 3:51PM
Speaking in terms of real-world performance Zack the 360 just slightly beats out the PS3 in even CPU power. The PS3 has a slightly stronger CPU but with one SPE out for redundancy and all the needless features there is approx. 13% of the total CPU power locked away whereas the 360's CPU only loses a mere 3 percent in real-world performance. The difference in GPU power and over-all design efficiency is clear as well, the nod obviously goes towards the 360. It's a sad and depressing truth, but the PS3 was just poorly designed. Honestly, why do you think the real reason Ken Kutaragi was replaced?
To anyone reading this I can link you to the full spec sheet of each console, the calculations made to determine the real-world performance of each console and all the other boring tedious facts you’ll have to read through. The calculations were even done with the potential performance data released by Sony regarding the PS3. Keep in mind it may take me a little while to find this information again as I’ve not had to use it in a long time.
Basically this all means 360 > PS3 in a completely objective technical manner.
e.Missark @ Aug 5th 2008 4:44PM
@anticrawl
You're saying that the PS3 is a poorly designed system...boy the IRONY on that one.
Also, to the other person who replied. Pick up a copy of Uncharted and then tell me there is no exclusive on the PS3 with mind blowing graphics.
joey @ Aug 5th 2008 4:46PM
Zack,
What I don't understand is what you use your game console for?
You see, I use it to play video games so I care about GAMEPLAY and GRAPHICS, etc.
You apparently care about how many SPEs are under the hood.
Unless there are games to back up the theory that developing a game using PS3 as the lead platform will benefit the 360 version, I call BULLSHIT.
Oh, and this theory came from Kaz of Sony. I have yet to hear any developer backing it up.
joey @ Aug 5th 2008 4:58PM
Look, I admit PS3 has some pretty looking games. But 360 is delivering the same level of graphics fidelity if not better. How can anyone claim that the PS3 is the better leading platform.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 10:07PM
Wow, why has my post garnered so much negative attention? Heaven forbid there's any constructive comments on here. lol
I'm not focused just on SPE's. It was just an example. The fact that Sony uses BluRay exclusively to develop the games is the big bonus. If Microsoft used HD-DVD to make their games, I can almost guarantee that they would've won the format war, since there is nothing that BluRay did that HD-DVD didn't do (and in most cases, did better).
Both systems have plenty of flaws. The Xbox 360 has a high return rate, and the PS3 has had firmware that decimated a portion of their systems. But when you have developers that are deciding to develop for the PS3 and port it over to the 360, there is something there to say. I mean, the only time you see games directly developed on the 360 is really when it comes to exclusives or when third-parties hold close relationships to Microsoft (or they just find it easier, which is understandable). When it comes to companies who have spent years developing mostly on the PC, it makes sense that they would focus a lot on the PC and 360 since the development kits make it a lot easier to move content over.
However, in Valve's case, I don't really see why they can't move it over to the PS3. It seems they complain a lot when it comes to a console's architecture, but because of that, they're losing out on another audience of people. I mean, you saw it with the case of Square-Enix with Final Fantasy XIII. They're quite used to developing on the Sony platform, but they realised how much money they were missing out on , so they moved over to the 360, at least here in America, due to the strong install base.
Here is EA's take on why using the PS3 as its native development platform and porting over will help them a a company: http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/08/04/ea-focus-on-ps3-as-lead-platform-for-game-development/
e.Missark brings up a good point about how Uncharted is actually a pretty good game. I recommend checking out the demo. You can love your 360 to death, but sometimes, it's worth it to at least try some of the games. It certainly won't kill you. lol. That's why two of my favorite games are Mass Effect (never tried the PC version) and Ratchet & Clank. I'm not a fanboy of consoles, I'm a fanboy of the games themselves. If we all get to play the same game, I think that's great! I await the day when we can play online cross-platform (aside from the PC and 360) like with Final Fantasy XI. It will be quite enjoyable. =D
offday @ Aug 5th 2008 2:21PM
It is kind of funny how pathetic fanboys are.
But at the same time, it's kind of sad that the official playstation magazine is obviously full of crap. You'd think that the freaking official playstation magazine would know what they're talking about. Guess not.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 2:30PM
With all due respect, it's not like OXM and Nintendo Power are any different. I just have to mention Headhunter Redemption and you'll know what I'm talking about.
A lot of magazines have factual errors in their print. For example, newspapers do it all the time. OPM could've found out the error, but the magazines were already shipped out to retailers. It's not as simple as hitting an 'Edit' button for online journalists. Nobody's perfect.
offday @ Aug 5th 2008 4:24PM
I understand. But with an "official" in front of it, you'd expect more professionalism. This is different than a typo. Someone just flat out lied somewhere down the line.
Devin @ Aug 5th 2008 4:53PM
@ offday
if you guy actually read more about the story you'd find out the OPM put it under the "Rumor" category.....seriously....
offday @ Aug 5th 2008 5:02PM
@Devin
Actually, it says absolutely nothing anywhere that this was stated as a rumor. In fact from reading this it even says that OPM "claimed" that Left 4 Dead was coming to the PS3. Do I need to define claim for you? Or can you be a big boy and look up for the word for yourself? I mean, since you're so busy criticizing people's reading abilities when it seems that you don't even know how to.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 10:14PM
Uh, offday, it was in their "Rumor" section. I picked it up off the newsstands today. That's why you see the Rockstar comment above it. It's all rumors, not to be taken as fact. Just pointing that out. ;)
Michael @ Aug 5th 2008 2:27PM
Fuk u Guyz, PS3s year is going to be next year! You wait and see, you M$ fangirls are going to be mad that you cant play little bigplanet and play with sacks. I love playing with sacks, sacks are the coolest things ever. Sometimez I put sackz in my mouf, or tickle them with the tip of my tongue.

I like shooting aliens for a living. It is so much fun to just point and shoot. Hooray! Guess which games I'm playing. Tha'ts right little boy...Gears and Halo. Hooray for games where the main premise is humans vs. aliens.
Why I bought a 360 for the 'creative' titles but instead I got Miis.
DOH!
e.Missark @ Aug 5th 2008 4:53PM
No wait! I bought a 360 to play some Halo. Good thing there are 4 Halo games currently in production. Now I can masturbate multiple times on all 4 covers.
Talk about milking a franchise for what is worth. Oh well, I've learned that Microsoft and creativity just don't mesh well.
DOH!
Arnon @ Aug 6th 2008 12:13AM
I seem to have realized these PS3 "fans" have nicked at everything 360 just because it's doing good.. this is pathetic, for both sides.
Jonah Falcon @ Aug 5th 2008 2:35PM
Little note: What Valve said was that there would be a PS3 version only if the PC/360 version was a best-seller.
Judging by reactions to it, that means a PS3 version is inevitable, because Left 4 Dead is smoking hot.
Unfortunately (fortunately?), Valve will probably tell EA to make it themselves, and we saw what The Orange Box was like.
Zack @ Aug 5th 2008 2:44PM
Honestly, and this is speaking from experience, the Orange Box wasn't that bad. People have expressed little to no problems. I think there were two levels in the entire pack that experienced a little bit of that "slideshow" framerate, but it only plagued me for a few minutes. Sure, it was pretty annoying, but it certainly didn't kill the game. It just received enormous amounts of bad press from the Gametrailers fiasco (didn't help that they had different settings for the PS3 version compared to the 360), and because Valve threw the pile of work onto a development team inside EA.
This is my experience from testing Orange Box for the Ps3, 360, and the PC.
Jonah Falcon @ Aug 5th 2008 2:45PM
Regardless, it's a timed exclusivity, which sometimes is just as potent as a total exclusivity (see: Bioshock)
ZEBRA NINER @ Aug 5th 2008 2:38PM
Oh damn, you just got served!!! ;)
Seriously though, When I read the controversial contents of this post, I just assumed it was Dustin(we all know how much he likes a flame war). Good one! :)
MetalGearsOfSolidWar @ Aug 5th 2008 5:21PM
Hypocrites
I guess we'll just overlook the time when 360 fanboys said all that bad stuff about Final Fantasy XIII and now they have it, they're so happy. Oh and the 360 version hasn't started development yet guys.
The PS3 version of XIII will be superior, we have Versus, and Agito for PSP, not to mention Dissida.
L4D looks awesome, buy I prefer it stays on 360, i'll just get it for my 360.
You 360 fanboys are terrible, you're hypocrites, you brag about every little thing the 360 gets or keeps. So us 360 owners get L4D to ourselves, ok thats all good, stfu and stop bragging about it. PS3 owners aren't bragging about getting Bioshock, Resistance 2, Heavy Rain, MAG, DC Online, God of War 3, and whatever Team Ico is doing.
I'm no PS3 fanboy
I play my Wii, PS3, and 360 equally. The only thing I hate is hypocritical fanboys like some of you 360 guys, PS3 guys, and Wii guys.
offday @ Aug 5th 2008 5:34PM
I didn't give a crap about FF when it was PS exclusive, and now that we get it, guess what? I still don't give a crap about it.
And FYI. You're the worst kind of fanboy, one who's totally oblivious to the fact.
