XBLA GoldenEye sitting in 'no man's land'
GoldenEye on the Xbox Live Arcade. We've heard the rumor, have even seen it in action, but til this day, nothing has come close to releasing. And from the looks of things, a GoldenEye XBLA release probably isn't going to happen.Talking to videogamer.com, Rare's senior software engineer Nick Burton acknowledged the GoldenEye development difficulties they've gone through saying that "it's incredibly hard to solve because there's so many licence holders involved. You've got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the licence to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees." Burton further explained that Rare doesn't have control over the project anymore and that it's in the hands of licenesee holders, making it almost "locked in this no man's land" of development hell. Long story short: GoldenEye XBLA is vaporware, turning out to be nothing but a sparkle of a dream of hope and nothingness. Got it?

a bit off topic, but Halo 3 is once again on top of XBL activity. 3 weeks runnin! Halo 3 forever!
Delirium @ Aug 6th 2008 6:16PM
You had to post irrelevant garbage somewhere though, right?
mrlittledebbie @ Aug 6th 2008 7:02PM
omg that guy is a 360 halo fanboy. look at his previous posts. lol. i dont see the point of caring what is on the top of the xbl activity or w/e.
OMGZ my favorite game is number one this week. that means its so much better than any game in the worldz.
Birdshake @ Aug 6th 2008 5:27PM
Well we're getting Perfect Dark though, right?
... Right?
Mr Khan @ Aug 6th 2008 5:48PM
Nintendo did not publish Rare's M-rated games on the N64, they were self-published by Rare, which means there's no contest from Nintendo's point of view
The rights to re-distribute the Banjo games were purchased by Rare back when Nintendo sold their controlling interest in Rare's stock, selling the IP to boot, though Nintendo did publish those.
VPhoenix @ Aug 6th 2008 6:05PM
Soooo... Perfect Dark on XBLA is still a possibility then?
Oh please say it's so...
Robert SRT @ Aug 6th 2008 6:56PM
Nintendo was the Publisher.
GoldenEye 007 was only a teen rated game.
I would love to see this game come on over to XBLA just for the nostalgia feeling.
AoE @ Aug 6th 2008 8:17PM
@Robert SRT,
Read the comments, the thread you replied to isn't discussing GoldenEye; it's talking about Perfect Dark, the other Rare N64 FPS. Which was M rated, and was published by Rare, as Mr. Kahn said.
InTheCatBoxAgain @ Aug 7th 2008 10:02AM
I sure hope so.
Perfect Dark is one of my all-time favorites; I'd kill to play this redone on XBLA.
NitroFrost @ Aug 6th 2008 5:28PM
Goldeneye > Chuck Noris > God > the rest.
Kyle @ Aug 6th 2008 7:05PM
Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tony @ Aug 6th 2008 5:45PM
MS is so big that I have to imagine they could figure all of this out. I really wish they would... Can't underestimate a $10 FPS on XBLA, particularly if it's Goldeneye. They'd easily make enough money off of it to offset the licensing costs and such.
Oh well.
Sarth @ Aug 6th 2008 5:49PM
I never owned a N64 so sadly missed out on this game. I would love to play it though.
Mr.U2 @ Aug 6th 2008 5:49PM
Quit tugging on my heart strings... :'( I'll miss you GoldenEye.
erico316 @ Aug 6th 2008 6:10PM
i agreed with what Nintendo is doing they should keep their classic to their system and let this game come out on 360 only if it should be release for wii.
Jonah Falcon @ Aug 6th 2008 6:13PM
Why?
erico316 @ Aug 6th 2008 6:29PM
i don't like remake much because i believe they may kill what was great once by updating it.there also the fact that game is not the fps that it once was back in the day.
In other word Golden eye was good when its was release but it not good for a fps of today standard.
Mr.U2 @ Aug 6th 2008 6:37PM
Actually, I still play GoldenEye every once in a while, and I have to say, it's a lot more fun than some of the Xbox 360's games. I don't think it would be outdated at all. Just kinda old feeling...
AoE @ Aug 6th 2008 8:20PM
"Just kinda old feeling" Hmm... if only there were a word we could sum this phrase up with... maybe... outdated? ;)
Cal @ Aug 6th 2008 11:13PM
I think you mean 'retro'
Boff @ Aug 7th 2008 5:31AM
Old school
Jonah Falcon @ Aug 6th 2008 6:12PM
It's pretty simple:
Microsoft wants GoldenEye to be exclusive on the 360. Nintendo says, "Nuh-uh."
Vcize @ Aug 6th 2008 8:16PM
Well Mr. Know-it-all, while it's hard to tell what's REALLY going on behind closed doors, the most tossed about and likely rumor when this news was hot a few months ago was that MS was willing to have a simultaneous release on the Virtual Console for the Wii and XBLA for the 360, but Nintendo essentially said no, and that they would never agree to anything that would see it released on another system.
Nintendo doesn't actually have any say in the matter technically, but Activision does and Activision and Nintendo are on good terms, and would not risk losing that over an XBLA title.
Jonah Falcon @ Aug 6th 2008 10:40PM
Nope. Read the article.
ChewyDogg @ Aug 6th 2008 6:18PM
Goldeneye was one of the most enjoyable games of all time, but I wouldn't buy it again. We've moved on, there are better FPS available.
Some will buy it for nostalgia, but how long will they play it? Once they realize that the bland maps, stiff controls, no ragdolls, no vehicles, no matchmaking doesn't hold up after such a long time.
I would rather they left the game and my fond memories of it, alone.
Magic Whiskey @ Aug 6th 2008 6:28PM
To quote the movie 'Airplane': "What a pisser."
Blair @ Aug 6th 2008 6:36PM
they should just compromise and release it on every console that way everyone is happy, we just want to relive a great game.
kyle @ Aug 6th 2008 9:18PM
awww...so depressing, i was hoping they would make it, prob the one game i would buy on the xbla titles
dandy @ Aug 6th 2008 11:51PM
so they want to screw people that simply want to play the game yeh??? thats the only real outcome of all this.
If they release it, people will buy it, simple as that...what the hell is wrong with comapnies?
Grendel Pr1me @ Aug 7th 2008 1:07AM
Nothing against the game, but seriously, it's time to let it go. Let it reside in the memories as a good thing when it happened, rather then something you dredge up later, and regret.
Kind of like that girl from high school you went out with, then broke up with on good terms to go off to university. But now the internet has brought you back together, only to further ruin the memory of their past hotness by them turning out to be a person who tans all the time, thus leathery, and also fat. Good memory - crushed forever.
sirpilf @ Aug 7th 2008 3:31AM
have any of you played goldeneye since 1997 even? the game is AWFUL now.. its unplayable... horrible controls, horrible graphics, you cant even see whats going on.
The BS Police @ Aug 7th 2008 12:52PM
Right, if it's so outdated that means DOOM is to, yet it plays extremily well on the Xbox 360 and nobody is complaining about it's graphics.
Goldeneye for the XBLA would play wonderfully with the 360 controller and it would also have upgraded graphics.

Mr.U2 @ Aug 7th 2008 6:22PM
Gonna have to agree with The BS Police. I recently played DOOM on 360 and it was AMAZING with the new controls and It's graphics are lower end. GoldenEye would do perfectly fine on 360. I do admit though that holding the N64 controller in my hand feels uncomfortable and awkward, but that's because we're used the the Xbox controller. Anyways, I would gladly pay 10 bucks for an XBLA version with multiplayer.
Gemini Ace @ Aug 7th 2008 8:52AM
I will never give up hope.
superbagman @ Aug 7th 2008 6:00PM
I was just chatting with a bunch of my friends about this last night. Goldeneye was a blast on the 64, but we spent SO much more time on Perfect Dark. If they released that on Live with online play I guarantee everyone I know would be on board, even the lapsed gamers would buy a 360 to play some long distance PD. I sincerely Rare is working on it...
