Ask X3F: That Virtua Feeling edition

Got a question for Ask X3F? Maybe you have a story or some information you'd like to share? Send it all to ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.
What consoles will Star Trek Online be on??? Will it be on Xbox 360 or PS3 or both??
Officially, Star Trek Online is only being released on PC. However, it was recently hinted in the official Star Trek Online FAQ that there might be cross-platform play with console versions. This would imply that there is at least the possibility that a console version is in development. It's worth considering that Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios is also working on Champions Online, which is definitely coming to the Xbox 360. Keeping this in mind, if there is a console version of Star Trek Online, we'd say it's a fairly safe bet it will land on the Xbox 360 and possibly on PS3 as well.
Hey,
Where is the game City of Metronome? I fell in love with it at E305 and have not seen anything else lately. Although not super similar, wouldn't the purchasers (such as myself) of BRAID be interested in this game too?
Tell me it isn't dead.
Thanks,
Raging Hamster
We're never too keen on further enraging a hamster, so please allow us to direct you a previous issue of Ask X3F in which we tackle this very question. You can find it right here (it's the last question). The word right now is that the game isn't dead, but it doesn't appear to be coming out any time soon either. For the record, the last we heard anything about the game was in November of 2007, so take that for what it's worth.
I was playing Halo 3 yesterday and i noticed something familiar. If you look down at master chief's feet, and tart shooting it looks like mirrors edge. This is pointless but its kinda funny.
Um, yes, that is pointless. Thanks for sharing!
Hey X3F! Wanna get some things off my mind...
1) Like most people, I'm excited about the new Dashboard update coming up. Yet, a few of my friends have said they're not happy with it and want to stick with the old look. Do you think Microsoft will give us an option to switch back the the old look through system settings if we want to?
2) Being pleased with Naruto on the 360, Dragonball and with Afro Samurai coming out shortly, will there be any more anime-based games for 360? I'd really like to see Bleach since it's been popular on the PSP & DS, and I'd like to play through the story on a next-gen console...
3) And finally, concerning Soul Calibur IV. I've not played a proper fighting game in almost 6/7 years since Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2, and now I'm a bit picky when it comes to fighting games. Should I get Soulcalibur IV, Virtua Fighter 5 or wait for something else if it comes out?
Cheers,
Michael
GT: Red Eyes Metal.
1) The new dashboard update is mandatory and there won't be any options to switch back to the old dashboard. At this point, the only way to keep the current dashboard would be to make sure you never connect your 360 to Xbox Live ever again. Even then, there's no saying that a future 360 game might not take advantage of some new feature that the old dashboard doesn't support. Long story short: the new dashboard's a'comin' and you're stuck with it. Tell you're friends not to worry though, because it's pretty slick and all of their old themes will still work.
2) Anime + youth market = money. In other words, yes, we're fairly certain there will be more anime games on the Xbox 360. We haven't heard of a Bleach title though ....
3) It all depends on what kind of fighter you're looking to play. Virtua Fighter 5 is a very deep, very technical fighter and it requires some pretty serious dedication to be good. Soul Calibur IV certainly has its technical aspects as well, though it lends itself more readily to random button mashing (a decent player would never fall victim to button mashing, of course). On the flip side of this, Virtua Fighter's technical nature makes it less accessible, whereas Soul Calibur is easier to get into. If you're planning on playing with close friends, accessibility is something to consider.
One last thing: you can buy Virtua Fighter 5 for much less than Soul Calibur IV, which might affect your decision.
Hey guys strange question today but if you could have all of these games in your library except one by the end of the year which would you choose not to get?
1. Left 4 Dead
2. Dead Space
3. Fallout 3
4. Gears of War 2
5. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Due to me not having enough time on my hands to play through all of these, and their close release dates, I need helping prioritizing!
Cheers
Jez360
Richard's answer: This one is tough for me. I honestly want to play every game on that list. In the end I think I'd have to strike Dead Space off the list. It's not that I don't want to play it but, of the five games up there, it's probably the most rental friendly. Given that it doesn't have any multiplayer and survival horror games tend to be low on replayability, Dead Space seems like the one to pick. You could say the same thing about Fallout 3, but it's bound to be much longer than probably every game up there so it's not quite so rental friendly. For the record, I'm probably most excited about Left 4 Dead.
Xav's answer: Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Dustin's Answer: Fallout 3
Rich, Xav, Alexander, Dustin:
Why is it the Xbox 360 lacks a harddrive when Microsoft's EDD [Entertainment and Devices Division] continues to put out products like this? You are looking at a 120GB Zune passing FCC testing. A device no larger than a 360 controller w/120GB of storage. This baffles me. Anyway, love the show.
(Really) Long answer:
The market for media players is much different than the console market. It's not like Microsoft could ship a Zune without a hard drive. As for why Microsoft decided to go without a hard drive in the Xbox 360, we're sure they would tell you something along the lines of "it's about choice." While that's true to a certain extent, there are issues of both perception and cost here. Regardless of how much these drives actually cost to make, Microsoft has set them up as something of value. This console is cheaper because it doesn't have a hard drive. This one is more expensive because it does.
This gives people the illusion that they get to buy an Xbox 360 without paying for something they don't need. The beauty of it, from a business perspective, is that once someone buys a 360 Arcade and realizes he does need a hard drive (a probability that goes up the longer he owns the system), he'll have to buy one of Microsoft's exhorbitantly priced, proprietary hard drives.
Short answer:
Money.
That's it for this week, folks. Keep sending your questions to: ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.

Soul Caliber for sure.
Soul Caliber has weapons, Virtua Fighter doesn't.
AoE @ Aug 26th 2008 6:44PM
Ah, but you forget... Virtua Fighter is a balanced, meticulous fighting game. Soul Calibur IV is an unbalanced mess. A FUN unbalanced mess, but an unbalanced mess regardless; it's hard to take the SC franchise seriously after this last game.
Sentox6 @ Aug 26th 2008 6:45PM
See, that's a downer for me. Hand-to-hand mixed martial arts does it for me way, way more than weapons.
ryan @ Aug 26th 2008 9:20PM
VF5 is the better fighter for more balanced online competition (no yodas in sight).
SC4 is the better "party" fighter. even your kid sister can play it and have fun.
Trunas @ Aug 27th 2008 1:27PM
I totally agree with AoE.....soul cal is a fast paced, button mashing, mess. It can be fun, but when i can give my 2 yr. old daughter the controller and she's able to get the main guys life down more than half way..........well......I'll just leave you with that thought! And it wasn't on easy.
Brian @ Aug 26th 2008 5:51PM
eh, i think you are wrong on then answer to question 3. Microsoft said you don't need to use the new dashboard.
I'd get a link to the story but i'm in a hurry. I'll get one later.
Brian @ Aug 26th 2008 5:52PM
*on the answer.

Here's a post from Major Nelson:
http://209.11.233.26/archive/2008/07/14/some-of-the-features-in-the-new-xbox-experience-8-person-chat-vga-plus-more.aspx
The third bullet point says, "Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game."
So the current guide will be replaced with the blades we have now, with all their functionality. The dashboard will become the "New Xbox Experience" for everyone. Blades will be there, but you'll have to hit that glowing button to get to it.
El Capitaine @ Aug 26th 2008 9:26PM
I'll just add to that by saying, NO, you will NOT be able to use the old dashboard. At ALL, unless you refuse to connect to LIVE again.
Now, however, hitting the Guide Button on your controller brings up a blades-like interface in the center of your screen, which has pretty much all the same options as the old Dashboard (not guide), without the fancy colors or ads. Meaning, instead of going to Guide>>Personal Settings>>Active Downloads, you go Guide>>Left to Marketplace Blade>>Active Downloads.
And for example, you can redeem marketplace codes while in-game. And you can switch games easily using the Quick Launch.
See this Youtube video to see it in use:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBn-uLcjoEc
At 1:45 they go to the new guide.
Also, the reason that friends, messages, and party aren't there are because it isn't connected to Live. Don't worry, they WILL be there - the few seconds of it at the E3 presser had them on. The current guide doesn't show friends, messages, or recent players if you aren't connected, either.
Richard Mitchell @ Aug 26th 2008 9:52PM
Yeah, the blades are now the guide, but I asked MS directly, and the new dashboard will be a mandatory update for everyone.
Mazrael @ Aug 26th 2008 6:13PM
Virtua Fighter 5 is balanced, unlike Soul Calibur.. yeah I spose the weapons are a plus.. but the SC series is moving very slowly, after a month of being out, I can't believe it hasnt been patched for balancing.. both need more convincing AI, SC's is dire.. play a stage a few times & it does the same things.. I find too much wrong with SC.. Whereas, VF I would just want the wrestlers removed, they just don't fit in with martial artists - there's other games for those...
AoE @ Aug 26th 2008 6:46PM
um... no previous Soul game was ever really balanced, why would they balance this one? Granted SCIV is so unbalanced it makes one's head spin... but let's face it, the series has been running headlong down this particular hill from the start...
ryan @ Aug 26th 2008 10:28PM
it's called Virtua Fighter. not Virtua Martial Arts.
Wrestling is indeed a form of FIGHTING. -_-
Boff @ Aug 27th 2008 5:02AM
Sorry but I'd say more entertainment than actual fighting.
ryan @ Aug 27th 2008 12:07PM
Wrestlers on TV fake it for entertainment. those moves can still harm in real life dude.
grappling and using submissive moves to wear your opponent down is a centuries old form of FIGHTING.
and yes, entertainment as well. but then again so were gladiator fights, and we all know how brutal those were. :D
halo 3 sucks. @ Aug 26th 2008 6:14PM
meh, my question wasnt answered. guess ill just sell my elite and get something else
Magic Whiskey @ Aug 26th 2008 6:49PM
I'm not a big fighter fan, but friends insist the best 3D fighters out there are the Tekken games.
AoE @ Aug 26th 2008 6:51PM
Your friends are button mashers then. VF > Tekken by miles, and always has been.
TORO @ Aug 26th 2008 7:00PM
Tekken is more of a timing game, try button-mashing against me and you'll get countered every time!
In regards to fighting games, I'm kinda looking forward to MK vs DC. Look at the trailers, the gameplay looks bad ass!
Jez @ Aug 26th 2008 7:01PM
Thanks for answering my question guys. I was pretty sure I was going to skip Dead Space so I'm glad at least one of you agreed with me.
Myztic7x @ Aug 26th 2008 7:28PM
ofcourse Dustin said fallout 3! =)
i fully agree that dead space is the one to skip.
-Banjo is an inexpensive platformer with a lot to ofer gameplay wise.
-Fallout will probably have a longer lifetime than all the other games.
-Gears is gears.
- Left4 Dead will be amazing. it WILL be. theres no denying it. that is ofcourse if you have 3 other buddies that know what they are doing...
RedSonRising @ Aug 26th 2008 8:10PM
Virtua Fighter 5, no question. 1000 gamerscore on that bad boy.. Im on my third copy of VF5 (dont ask) and after 2 weeks with Soul Calibur 4 i am confident ill never have to rent it again..
VF5 is extremely intimidating but equally rewarding. the fighting engine is much more robust than SC4 and combat is as technically sound as it is challenging to understand..
SC4 has ridiculously a deep character creation system that VF5 cant compete with but all the glitter is not gold. All those options have very little effect on combat that isnt any more complicated than making Jell-O..
if you want to play with friends, by all means get SC4 and mash away.. if you want a 'real' fighting game that will (less than generously) reward your commitment you should definitely buy Virtua Fighter 5
ryan @ Aug 26th 2008 9:25PM
i actually do want to know why you went thru 3 copies of VF5? :)
ryan @ Aug 27th 2008 12:15PM
heheh, cool. that is certainly devotion! and yeah i rented SC4 too and am also looking forward to L4Dead and Gears 2. :D
RockerAnimeFreak @ Aug 27th 2008 3:05AM
Dead or Alive 4 ftw! anyway where the hell is Castle Crashers its 12.05 am pacific! T_T I must buy it already!!!!!!!!1
RedSonRising @ Aug 27th 2008 7:26AM
@rockeranimefreak
vf5>sc4>doa4 (my fighting game hierarchy)
vf5 is not an 'arcade' game, its not for kids.. if you dont like fighting games vf5 is probably not for you.. doa4 is closer to sc4 than anything else, instead of spamming attacks ppl just spam counters..
@ryan
ok, i bought vf5 and some how managed to crack the disc. then i immediately bought another copy, flipped out one night and traded it back in figuring id just replace it with soul calibur 4.. rented sc4 (smart move) and was pretty disappointed in the combat and now i have to pick up my 3rd copy from the same gamestop.. again.
and finally Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts doesnt even rate on my list of games.. ill probably rent fallout3 to see if its any good for me but i didnt like oblivion so im not holding my breath on that one either..
gears2 and left for dead are the only official must haves for me.. dead space looks promising but will probably be another forgettable 3rd person shooter in the end..
nuff said.
Gabriel @ Aug 27th 2008 9:17AM
Virtua Fighter is the best 3D fighting game available. DOA 4 follows close behind, which is why it's represented in MLG, but it stll has minor balance issues and a few moves track too well. Tekken 5 suffers from unbalanced characters, mainly because Namco put too many characters in the game to balance it properly. There are moves that suck you in, including some strikes. I understand some throws sucking in but a strike should never suck in. There's also the combination of moves that track too well and moves with huge hit boxes. I've sidestepped behind Baek before and he kicked straight up in the air, facing away from me, and launched me while I was still behind his back. Soul Calibur 4 has its share of these problems, but it's more bearable. Sidestepping is inadequate and ringouts are too easy, though. The only bad thing about Virtua Fighter 5 is that it's not a pick-up-and-play game. It takes some practice. It's worth it, but you would really benefit from buying an arcade stick for this as the stick is superior to the pad in every way. Avoid the DOA 4 stick, though, especially if you will be wearing it out a lot. It has rubber contacts that wear down easily from excessive play time.
