Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls

Today, team Capcom just announced some interesting Resident Evil 5 information regarding the game's control scheme. More specifically, they're looking to overhaul the current RE5 control formula by replacing the classic stop and shoot mechanic with a more Gears inspired cover system. What's the reason? RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi feels that the cover system controls will slow down the tension that could potentially bring a new horror element into the mix. Expect to see a completely new RE5 unveiling during the Tokyo Game Show in October.

Looks like they weren't just blowing smoke when people mentioned the control scheme at E3. It's good to know that Capcom is willng to change to compete with the rest of the world.

Yes! Thank God. I wouldn't be able to stand the game with its old control scheme. If you're going to make the game fast-paced, you can't have our character control like a lumbering, slow tank. Hooray for strafing!

Tell that to MGS4.
Seriously, I loved that game. But sometimes during the non-stealth sections it just felt weird controlling this sloooooowwww ass guy who's top speed was one third my jogging speed.

well, Snake is quite old in MGS4...and streaming off a bluray disc. i kid, i kid. :P

Is it just me or is this new comment system COMPLETELY broken on this website. It never remembers my email address and NEVER sends me an email when someone replies to my comments. Is this happening for everyone!
Any chance of this getting fixed guys?

being that RE4 pretty much invented the over shoulder view I see no problem from them now borrowing from those who borrowed from them. this game looks amazing and will offer 360 owners something that even gears 2 will not be able to bring to the table. I can't wait for both!
Fenix @ Sep 2nd 2008 3:23PM
100% agreed

the team said they are pretty big fans of Gears of War. i like that they introduce what they enjoy and what others enjoy instead of keeping it "old school".

gears isnt 'over the shoulder'...i think resi do a gears cover system...they should just make the character move qwicker
ryan @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:37PM
in Gears, when you aim and zoom in, your view becomes closer and 'over the shoulder'. that is where the term 'over the shoulder' comes from. that is why both RE4 and Gears share 'over the shoulder' control schemes.
...over the shoulder!
bigwilly @ Sep 2nd 2008 3:33PM
gears aint 'over the shoulder'...what did gears borrow from the resi series?
joeybeast @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:11PM
what control scheme not to use.

Gears IS over the shoulder - CliffyB said it himself on his Emergence Day message - maybe still on Marketplace.

"being that RE4 pretty much invented the over shoulder view"....... em you only start gaming on the CUBE? :S

I dunno...I'm skeptical. As excellent as RE4 was, it definitely made the series more action-oriented and less horror-themed. I'm not sure that adding Gears-style controls would befit the series. And part of the tension was created by the very fact that you couldn't strafe or somersault or whatnot. I don't want my single favorite series to become a twitch shooter like every other action game out there. (Don't get me wrong, I like Gears, but it's not RE4.)

I guess im in the minority of missing the survival horror genre. There is a severe lack of zombie games. It use to be you could hear the Resident Evil and think of zombies and puzzles. Now its just another action game. I'm sure the game will be decent tho.

I'm sure the game will be decent, but a disappointment no less in my book.

I hope there are portions of the game where you just walk around town in your skin tight muscle shirt and fingerless gloves, jibber-jabbering on your bluetooth headset and random civilians just start attacking you for being such a douche.

I hate those people; I always think they're talking to me until it becomes apparent they're... talking to themselves? Oh, wait...

Moving while shooting? What sorcery is this? Everyone knows when zombies are comes towards you, you stand perfectly still in place before you can start shooting.
Sentox6 @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:27PM
IGN seem to be making some assumptions here.
Kotaku says "While he [Takeuchi] didn't go into any great detail about the changes, he did refer to them as "Gears-like" controls."
So I would expect to see some movement ability while aiming. Doesn't mean we're getting a cover system, though. Hopefully not.
ziggen @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:40AM
they should have over the shoulder view for chessmaster 2009
Kabapu @ Sep 3rd 2008 2:43AM
To be fair, I think you mean "Kill.Switch" inspired cover system. That game did it first.
bigwilly @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:08AM
yeah exat when u pull the left trigger it 'becomes' over the shoulder...but isnt like resi which is always showing that view.its as though games are all just blending the same sorta experience jus with diff enemies to kill...wot they should do is work ona mutliplayer or suming...oh and are they dealing with the character switching like resi zero on cube??that was the only resi i completed other than 1
