Rock Band disc export available, $5 for 55 songs

Today, Harmonix officially announced that the Rock Band disc export, the update that allows most all Rock Band songs to be available in Rock Band 2, is now available for download off the XBLM. Though, it doesn't really do anything until Rock Band 2 releases. The disc export update will set you back 400 Microsoft points ($5) and will import 55 of the Rock Band songs into the game sequel. 55 songs seem a little light? Well, you're correct. Sadly, "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden and the European exclusive "Monsoon" by Tokio Hotel will not be a part of the transfer. We can only speculate to why a re-license agreement couldn't be made.

That picture would work alot better without the added commentary.
a ham sandwich @ Sep 4th 2008 3:30PM
pardon my stupidity, but what about downloaded songs? i assume they'll just transfer over automatically?
DudeRed @ Sep 4th 2008 3:41PM
Yup, those will work for Rock Band 2 automatically.

Fuck Metallica anyways....

Just one of the reasons i hate the music industry and refuse to buy music or games like these. If you bought the original rock band you already paid for one license for all those songs. Now you have to pay another $5 for licenses you already own and you dont even get all of them?
F the music industry. greedy bastards.

Did the metallica tour bus run over your puppy or what? So much hate.....
ordigas @ Sep 4th 2008 4:36PM
You're not paying for the license again, but for the convenience of not having to change discs to play the Rock Band 1 songs ... but you are right about the music industry.
Xoviet chiK @ Sep 4th 2008 5:06PM
You are also paying so Harmonix doesn't get completely shafted by folks who don't actually own Rock Band using the export tool with a rented / borrowed disc.
"Just one of the reasons i... ...refuse to buy... ...games like these."
I can only assume you don't have Rock Band, and would gladly have utilized this tool with your rented copy for free.

Well, Paranoid and Run to the Hills were covers and not the original masters, so I'm not sure why those are being held up. But then again they were covers, so I'm not too broken up if they go away.

lol at the picture, even with the text. i wouldn't of read the article w/o the text on the picture.
CyberKnight @ Sep 4th 2008 4:00PM
55 is "a little light"???
I wasn't expecting "Train Kept a Rollin'" either; maybe Aerosmith didn't own the license to this particular cover recording? I dunno, I'm guessing.
@a ham sandwich: This just copies the songs on the RB1 disc to the hard drive, so that they're available when the RB2 disc is in the drive. Since your DLC songs are already on the hard drive, there's nothing that needs to be done for RB2 to see them.
In other words, yep, they'll "transfer over" automatically.
Glenn @ Sep 4th 2008 5:39PM
Aerosmith didn't write this song, but covered it themselves. Therefore, the rights to the song weren't Aerosmith's.
G-fro @ Sep 4th 2008 10:41PM
Good old Yardbirds and Jimmy Page. Then it was the first song Led Zeppelin ever played together. They said it was instant band.
dunnypop @ Sep 4th 2008 4:01PM
that's a bit upsettings since I really love Paranoid and Enter Sandman.
oh well, better than nothing that's for sure. Considering GH 1, 2, 3 didn't have transferable songs.
FriskyFlorist @ Sep 4th 2008 4:02PM
So will the DLCed version of Monsoon be okay then?
FriskyFlorist @ Sep 4th 2008 4:06PM
So is the DLC version of Monsoon okay then?
FriskyFlorist @ Sep 4th 2008 4:07PM
Ugh, stupid posting system. :\
HazyCloud @ Sep 4th 2008 4:09PM
Yep, as long as your version isn't on the disc. If it's DLC, you're good.
craig64 @ Sep 4th 2008 4:44PM
Sweeeeet! I have 460 points sitting on there doing nothing. :D This is awesome!
dicknjane @ Sep 4th 2008 4:48PM
good, i hated all those songs. kudos Rock Band 2! this is my GOTY!!
juangrande386 @ Sep 4th 2008 5:03PM
1. Does this put everything into a Rockband 2 folder on my 360 harddrive so I can delete my Rockband 1 save after the transfer?
Timur Tabi @ Sep 4th 2008 5:02PM
This is some lazy reporting here, Dustin. Where is the link to the actual announcement, and the list of 55 songs? All you're providing is a link to a joystick.com page, which doesn't link to the official announcement or the list either! Come on!
Deezul @ Sep 4th 2008 8:06PM
Lazy reporting? No, lazy reader. There are 58 songs included on the disc. Justin mentioned 3 songs not included. 58-3 equals, wait for it... 55!
bmill @ Sep 4th 2008 5:19PM
No love lost here for Iron maiden... hate that band, hate the charts for the song worse, paranoid cover was awful, so take that one, but ENTER SANDMAN!?? NOOOOOOO
MuDvAyNe @ Sep 4th 2008 9:32PM
How much harddrive space will this take up?
Ghoti @ Sep 4th 2008 11:20PM
About 1.5 GB.
Secre @ Sep 7th 2008 4:37AM
I want the unedited version of that picture.
