Retailers clearance price 20GB Xbox 360s
With Microsoft's official confirmation of the Xbox 360 price cuts that puts Arcades at $199, 60GB Pros at $299 and 120GB Elites at $399, it looks like retailers are moving quickly to get the old Xbox 360 20GB models off their shelves by resorting to some old fashioned clearance pricing. The recently discounted to $299 20GB Xbox 360 models are now showing up at retailers across North America at even lower price points due to the fact that the 60GB model also dropped its price to $299. Essentially making the 20GB a bad deal. As a result, Best Buy and Amazon.com are currently selling the 20GB 360 model for $259 while Futureshop in Canada has discounted the 20GB model to $199 and is bundling it with Gears of War and DOA: Xtreme 2. Happy shopping!

Good news guys thanx again for keeping the XBOX community upto date. I was wondering if you heard anything on the stand alone 20GB HDDs.
P.S.
Keep up the great work.
Max Headroom @ Sep 5th 2008 1:16PM
I got the 20 GB model shortly after it went to $299 as well. There was already talk of the 60 GB model at that time, so I knew full well that there would likely be more changes shortly. The thing is, the only change is the size of the hard drive. That's easily augmented by adding your own storage space via USB, connecting your XBox to your PC, or buying a new hard drive later.
If I had missed out on a bunch of new features, I would have felt the sting. But hard drive space doesn't bother me that much, especially when I've been having so much fun playing games for the past few months. And I've still got a bunch of space left with several options to expand it should I need to.
joeybeast @ Sep 5th 2008 12:00PM
I fell bad for those who bought a 20gb 360 at 299.
Still no sure why MS did the exact same thing Sony did last year. I guess it's more cost effective.
mirage @ Sep 5th 2008 12:16PM
As much as it sucks for consumers, it makes good business sense to sell through your existing stock rather than pull them and replace them with the new sku.
Doug @ Sep 5th 2008 12:37PM
"As much as it sucks for consumers, it makes good business sense to sell through your existing stock rather than pull them and replace them with the new sku."
Dude, we're consumers here. Not businesses.
bizarrorollins @ Sep 5th 2008 12:43PM
I purchased the 20gb the day after they lowered the price from target-- that came with a $25 gift card, so it lowered the price to $275 + tax. I don't see that as much of a loss as I have been gaming happily for the past two months. While it would be nice to have a 60GB HDD, i'm not entirely sure what I would do with the space. I have Netflix so I have no intention of using the video store and XBLA games are minuscule in size.
Patrick @ Sep 5th 2008 1:00PM
I bought a 20 GB 360 for $399 in March 2007 at ToysRUs, and got a bonus $50 gift card, which I immediately used to purchase God of War II. I Don't regret the purchase at that time at all, since I've spent many happy hours gaming on it.
Yes, it costs a little more to adopt technology early, but the reward is that you get to enjoy that technology for that much longer. I bought a 10 GB iPod for $399 in August 2002 and don't regret that either.
Devin @ Sep 5th 2008 1:09PM
God of War II, huh? Didn't know it came out for 360....lol
tatsukishi @ Sep 5th 2008 12:03PM
Microsoft should also be mailing everyone who has a 20gb hard drive currently, a 60gb drive along with a letter of apology.
MC Double Def DP @ Sep 5th 2008 12:23PM
Apple didn't send me an 80 gig iPod & an apology letter to replace my 30 gig iPod.
Welcome to the real world kid.
Rick @ Sep 5th 2008 12:27PM
Yeah, in the real world, people pay for whatever is available at the time, with full knowledge that it will become obsolete eventually. Are you new?
Doug @ Sep 5th 2008 12:41PM
Boy, you two are a lot of laughs today. I guess Dad really whooped the fairness gene out of you.
Stop lecturing people who are expressing frustration at M$'s exorbiantly overpriced HDD's.
The fact that M$ can offer a 60gb drive at three-times the size and the SAME price as a 20gb drive... with no new leap in technology, just a marketing change, is very frustrating.
Yeah, we bought the 20gb 360 because it's all there was. But we don't have to join your real world of sucking up to your gaming company.
Microsoft keeps showing it's a money-hungry beast, not the fan-friendly gaming company it pretends to be.
joeybeast @ Sep 5th 2008 12:47PM
We all know the cost on the hdd is for the proprietary connectors not the size if hdd itself.
Doug @ Sep 5th 2008 1:39PM
lol
Luay @ Sep 5th 2008 2:22PM
the fact that you still use the $ when Referring to Microsoft is embarrasing enough.
Bottom line is you want things early you pay the price for them, give it time and they well decrease and then you can say you got it at a good deal.
Doug @ Sep 5th 2008 3:15PM
That 60gb HDD did not come as a result of innovation like the larger 80 and 160 iPod mini-drives, which have to be created in smaller form factors. And if so, why aren't stand-alone 20gb drives $39 now? It's pure gouging.
M$ is a forum abbreviation. It's also accurate.
What's embarrassing is gamers logging onto this site to justify cynical pricing structures as "the way it is" and defending it. Buy some stock, why don't you.
Rick @ Sep 5th 2008 12:15PM
I may have missed it, but has there been any official word on standalone 60gb drives? Pricing, availability date?
Odog4ever @ Sep 5th 2008 12:49PM
Yeah, I was just thinking when are they going to offer a stand alone 60GB drive for those that "already bought in" to the 360 universe?
If Microsoft wants me to keep buying DLC and movies they better make it affordable to upgrade because my 20GB stuffed. And it better not cost $100 dollars like the old 20GB did. In what world is $5 a gig an acceptable price? Get it together Microsoft.
RockerAnimeFreak @ Sep 5th 2008 6:57PM
@ Odog4ever: I payed 5 bucks a gig for my 2 gig thumb drive is that a bad deal? or maybe you are just referring to people being able to get like 500 gig hdds for the computer at like 150 bucks.
Hafk @ Sep 7th 2008 11:27PM
But this is a hard disk drive, not solid state like a thumb drive. If it was a solid state drive, I could understand the high prices (Actually, it would need to be priced higher)
As a HDD, it should be much cheaper. 2.5" 120 GB HDDs can run as low as $60 after markup! $100 aditional markup, more than the product itself, is way too large for a hard drive. Microsoft would crumble into dust if they had competition, but since it is their own on proprietary HDD, it'll never dip below $150.
vidGuy @ Sep 5th 2008 12:34PM
I want a 60GB drive for $99 or less. Not going to happen for a while with the way MS prices harddrives but that would certainly make my day.
Sean @ Sep 5th 2008 1:11PM
$99.00 is going to be the price. If you check Amazon and Gamestop the price of the 120GB drive went down to $150.00.
SO.... Arcade plus $99.00 60 GB drive equals pro price but Arcade plus 150 equals $350.
So I guess black plastic, HDMI cable, and headset costs $50.
Deezul @ Sep 5th 2008 12:40PM
I saw a standalone 20GB drive at Target for $70. If it hits $50, it might be a better bargain to get a Core plus the reduced price HD. I might do that for my bedroom 360.
Anticrawl @ Sep 5th 2008 12:57PM
Went out earlier to see what was open in the area now that the post hurricane stuff has cooled off a bit. Wouldn't you know it though many of the retail stores are clearing out the 20gb models and have them priced at $199, the same price as the arcade. Seems a bit moronic but hell I'd take advantage of it if I didn't already own two 360s.
Larry @ Sep 5th 2008 12:59PM
MC Double Def DP is correct in the real world people miss sales cuts all the time. These devices are not toys welcome to the world of consumer electronics.
Lan @ Sep 5th 2008 9:15PM
Great, I got a 20G 360 for Christmas 2007. I think it was like 350 dollars. >_>
At least it came with Forza 2 and Marvel.
Dirty @ Sep 5th 2008 2:11PM
120gig drive on sale now for 150 at gamestop...... still overpriced
http://www.gamestop.com/gs/weeklyad/current/090508/default.aspx
Rick @ Sep 5th 2008 2:29PM
Ha, Doug, you're bringing up an issue that is different than what tatsukishi was suggesting. Yeah, the standalone drives are way overpriced for the sizes they use, I'm not arguing that. There's no way they should cost more than $100 for the largest drive.
But there's no way any company is going to sell a product and then give away a future upgraded product for free to all the people who bought the previous gen product. That would be impossible.
If you want the new tech, buy it. If you don't want to or cannot afford to pay for it, don't buy it. You don't have to like it, but sorry, that's reality. You can go on living in a fantasy land where you get unlimited future upgrades for free if you want to. I'm sure there are plenty of other whiners out there who will join you (and these are the same whiners who moan every time any new generation of a product comes out right after they bought the previous generation...nothing makes them happy except feeling like everyone owes them something for free).
Too harsh? Too bad.
Doug @ Sep 5th 2008 3:21PM
I don't think the OP was seriously saying Microsoft should refund money. He was making a point that when these drive sizes are arbitrarily raised from 20 to 60 at the same price, it proves that the previous drive was way overpriced. (Something we've all said from day 1.)
I've been an early adopter many times, as I'm sure you have. I love the 360. But the crazy prices for HDD's, wireless networking, etc. It's hard to see gamers on here defending that.
Clinton oxendine @ Sep 5th 2008 5:38PM
hey patrick im try 2 be funny but buyin a 360 in march of 2007 wasent early unless u were just refering to the ipod
DM89 @ Sep 5th 2008 9:09PM
Where does it say on futureshop.ca that they're selling the 20GB 360 plus two games for $199? I see the arcade version with two games for that price.....
Robby @ Sep 6th 2008 2:22AM
I just thought i would add, it's amazing because i think xbox 360 is the last product to have a 20gb hard drive, i mean i don't believe they manufacture them anymore. In fact i don't think there was a consumer version of a laptop sata drive at 20gb.
RedSonRising @ Sep 6th 2008 7:23AM
i dont understand what all the excitement is about.. 20gb, 60gb, 120gb; if you're not buying tons of XBLA games and buying movies off XBLVM it doesnt matter.. ive had a 20gb for about 2 years now and i rarely fill the hdd if i keep it neat and tidy.. 15 XBLA games, 5gb of paid video and ive got room to keep superman returns, crackdown, force unleashed, vf5 and doa4 demos and still download a couple more before tonight is over..
the key is to get a system with a hdd from day one. any sized hdd will do the job and anything over 20gb is gravy.. if you're not buying video off XBLVM i dont know what youd need more than 20 or 60gb for anyway..
(on a sad note my 360 doesnt wanna read discs anymore so its off to m$ again this weekend for repairs.)
NewJohnny @ Sep 8th 2008 2:14AM
I went to buy a 360 Pro today and picked up one of these great deals. I had budgeted for $299 my Rock Band 2 pre-order is essentially free.
