We were contacted by
EA late last week about the recent
expedition of the
Dead Space release date and, somehow, we failed to notice that the email also confirmed that
Dead Space has been banned in Japan, German, and China. According to the email, "Dead Space was banned from being sold (yes outright banned, this time I'm correct) in Japan, Germany, and China!" So, there you have it kids, it's not a rumor at all (though that matter is apparently
in dispute). The email makes no mention of the reason for the ban, though we imagine it has something to do with the amount of
gore and violence present in
Dead Space. X3F has contacted EA to find out if the company will make changes to the game in order to sell it in the aforementioned regions.

Yay! More for US. Cause we don't promote violence we encourage it.

Ah.... good'ol Japan. Where bestiality porn is proudly displayed but you can't buy a little gore and dismembering in space.

Don't forget about their used panty vending machines.

japan's all about loving thy neighbor, thy neighbor's dog, thy neighbor's tentacle monster, and thy sister.
so yeah, they love and don't hate. OFTEN. :D

It makes me want the game even more now.
MC Double Def DP @ Sep 10th 2008 1:52PM
agreed. at first this game wasn't even on my radar. now hearing this, I want it bad!!! ...of course Manhunt 2 got banned from some countries right?... so maybe I should keep my excitement in check.

Fuck censorship. Germany and China doesn't surprise me, but I am surprised it is banned in Japan.
halo 3 sucks. @ Sep 10th 2008 9:04PM

whoa...
JAPAN?
this is gonna be an awesome game.
i'm very surprised at that.
what i'm even more surprised at is that Australia, somehow, isn't there....
being that they'd ban a Barbie game if it so much as showed her prick her finger.

If you're having a hard time finding something to be proud of, being an American, look no further than the surprising lack of censorship when it comes to games and movies.
This censorship disgusts me. It's like living in the fraking 18th century.
Really? You can't allow ADULTS to play this game, Germany, China, and Australia?
Fuck the board that tells me what I am allowed to play, watch, or read!
lordsumesh1 @ Oct 23rd 2008 10:51PM
australia isnt on the list. its japan
ccc @ Sep 11th 2008 12:23AM
This does increase my intrest in the game.
It would be bad ass if it said it was banned in those countries right on the cover of the box when it goes on sale....
RedSonRising @ Sep 11th 2008 2:03AM
im not impressed.. this is exactly the sort of publicity stupid people expect from video games.. theyre just creating more ammo for talking heads on tv and giving uninformed soccer moms something to complain about on talk radio in the morning.
this strikes me as a deliberate move; get the game banned to drum up free publicity in markets that otherwise would've ignored the title..
easy solution: a simple slider/switch that turned up the gore or toned down the carnage.. in sensitive markets set it to 0/none/low and disable the users option to adjust it.. but then itd just be a quick blurb and fly by like whats happening with fallout3 and noone would care..
tacky move.. dont call it censorship cause its not; its called stupid and both parties are to blame.

Edboy @ Sep 11th 2008 8:46AM
I don't think the Japanese have so much of a problem with the gore as much as they have a problem with killing flying zombie babies.
China and Germany however, just love the banhammer.
