Force Unleashed demo breaks Marketplace record

Harnessing its force-like powers, Lucas Arts is gloating that the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo that released to the XBLM last month, broke a prestigious Marketplace record. Specifically, Lucas Arts claims that the Force Unleashed demo was downloaded 1 million times off the Marketplace in an eight day period, which would be a day quicker than the previous demo record holder Too Human. With demo downloads like that, The Force Unleashed should easily eclipse 5 million copies at retail ... HA!

Good for them, I wonder how many people the demo convinced NOT to buy the game though. Personally I'm not a real big SW fan so the demo did nothing for me.
ryan @ Sep 11th 2008 2:30PM
As a SW fan i was expecting alot more from it, so yeah, it's a bargain bin purchase for me.
but, uh, yeah, good job with that record breaker Lucas Arts! :P

I dont see the big deal about this. There hasnt been that many good demos recently (at least for me) so I figured I'd try it out. The demo was fun except once I walked through a corner wall and it went crazy buggy on me and had to restart.
Fun game, but I dont want to pay $60 for it. It'll be on the Christmas list for someone else to pay for it though :)

Too bad it's going to stop people from buying it. I was kind of pumped about the game with all the tech demos they were doing from it. It seemed like it was going to be innovative. Then I played it and it was just elements from several other last-gen games mashed together. And what was up with the character models? The eyes on the apprentice looked like they were part of a rubber mask. The Soul Calibur version looks way better. Your character should not look better in other, earlier games than your own.

I think in this case, lots of demo downloads will NOT translate into sales. For me, the demo convinced to pass on buying this game. I played the demo for a bit, said "Meh..." and moved on
bioadam @ Sep 11th 2008 10:40AM
Don't be a Jedi hater. Who wants to pay $60 for any game? The Demo was great. Smashing clones with force powers is fun, but dropping Tie fighters on them is awesome. And Lucasart's hasn't had a good Star Wars themed game since Dark Forces II.
BobTheMonkey @ Sep 11th 2008 10:53AM
Personally, I liked Jedi Knight II alot better. I spent the entire spring semester of my freshman year playing that game. FU reminded me alot of that game, and was a bit disappointed when it didn't really play like it. But I still have my preorder in :) 5 days!
Jcarpio @ Sep 11th 2008 10:53AM
The demo convinced me that I will like the game enough to get it off of gamefly. =)
psychohog @ Sep 11th 2008 11:10AM
I hear that, that's the way to go!
Magic Whiskey @ Sep 11th 2008 10:53AM
I hope I can find a copy to rent next week. I doubt I'll ever buy the game; I hope my doubts about crappy re-playability is unfounded, but that's how I feel right now about it.
Vcize @ Sep 11th 2008 10:54AM
Man, everyone hated this game, I don't get it. I had a ton of fun with it, and that's priority number 1 for me when buying a game, not all this other intangible stuff that we can reach for to find fault with.
FreekyWiggle @ Sep 11th 2008 11:00AM
Yes exactly! I thought it was great. I've played the demo multiple times and I can't wait for this game. I don't see why everyone thinks it is so bad. Its fun! I like it. That's what I look for in a game.
Boo hoo, it has faults. 1) Thats just the demo, expect bugs. 2) What game does'nt have faults?
PaulStanley the 3 @ Sep 11th 2008 5:03PM
you're right, the fun factor should be at the top of people's gaming experience.p
Rufus @ Sep 11th 2008 10:57AM
...I enjoyed it, and lest us not forget this is a demo, it's not complete. Things can be tweaked, changed and improved and considering the bullshit out there in the market at the moment, I'll take what is likely going to be one of the best SW games ever made anyday.
Andrew @ Sep 11th 2008 11:17AM
it convinced me not to buy the game. I liked the demo and all but it just reminded me of every single dynasty warriors game...minus the part about being set in japan...and fun
mrpeatie @ Sep 11th 2008 11:25AM
I wasn't all that impressed the first time through. It took a few times playing it to really get a grasp of the controls then I really enjoyed it.
I am a bit dismayed by the early reviews on metacritic. They haven't been too favorable.
killbot13 @ Sep 11th 2008 11:35AM
I need to wait for a rental on this one.
killbot13 @ Sep 11th 2008 11:36AM
testing, sorry
jaydub @ Sep 11th 2008 11:44AM
I thought the demo was very nice and fun. I really can't wait until it comes out. Think about it this was just the demo imagine what else the sith apprentice will be able to do. Games is gonna be huge.
Brian @ Sep 11th 2008 12:30PM
I hate to say it, but I disliked the demo. The force "stuff" was cool, but the controls were "Alone in the Dark"-crappy.
Trunas @ Sep 11th 2008 1:15PM
I liked the demo......Might not have gotten it if i was paying full price for it, but I'm not so I'll be picking this up!!!
Jaydub, same thing I was thinking......We just got a taste of what he can do, just wait until he becomes stronger over the course of the game! Awesome.
dylan @ Sep 11th 2008 2:15PM
I've heard rumor that this game is not going to review well...
ryan @ Sep 11th 2008 2:31PM
apparently the PSP version is the best one to get believe it or not.
guidedbyvoip @ Sep 11th 2008 5:05PM
@bobthemonkey
Jedi Outcast was indeed the bombdiggity.
guidedbyvoip @ Sep 11th 2008 5:07PM
"Specifically, Lucas Arts claims that the Force Unleashed demo was downloaded 1 million times off the Marketplace in an eight day period..."
But who will count all of the broken hearts??? ;'(

You guys are crazy. I've read the graphic novel so I know the story, and I've played the demo about 50 times at this point, and I will be first in line on Wednesday to scoop this bad boy up. It is easily the best Star Wars game made, and all the new stuff is AWESOME. That was only a... demo. A sample. The storyline is awesome, and the end is huge to the Star Wars continuity. This game will be AWESOME.
