id: RAGE hasn't been scaled down due to the Xbox 360

According to id Software the recent reports that its upcoming title RAGE has been drastically scaled down on all platforms due to the Xbox 360's media-size limitation are incorrect.
"There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL," wrote Willits. "We feel the 360 is a great platform and will provide a fantastic Rage experience," id Software's Tim Willits told Shacknews. The original statement made by Willits mentioned the game had changed from "5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands." The change was mostly due to the title shipping on two Xbox 360 discs but Willits claims the change was for the better of the game because it would reduce load times between all platforms.
So, RAGE hasn't been scaled down because of the Xbox 360 ... it was changed because of the Xbox 360. Completely different, people!

Too late:
We're in ur base, harassing your 360 fanboys.
tomoguisuru @ Sep 17th 2008 10:49AM
The content may be the same, but the fact still remains that the 360 is getting the shaft in way of textures and depth (at the moment). id said it themselves, they don't want to opt for a third DVD without MS helping so the textures have to be dumbed down.
I think in the end MS will bend and id will get that 3rd DVD though.
Neil @ Sep 17th 2008 12:03PM
Bend for just id, or all developers, cause I can't seem them being able to get away with doing only id a favor?
Kokomadeta @ Sep 17th 2008 1:09PM
I would love to see a third disc. I don't know about anyone else, but I love multi-disc games. My brother and I share most games, so if he's done with disc 1, then I get to play it while he's doing disc 2. A third disc with more content (not 'bonus' content) would be just fine with me.
Phizzy @ Sep 17th 2008 11:13AM
Yeah, it wasn't scaled down because they realised their design wasn't possible and made it smaller. They would've had to have already made it to scale it down.
Xav de Matos @ Sep 17th 2008 12:00PM
Exactly. Thank you.

Who cares. If the game is good, that's all that matters. Technology changes. Microsoft was first to the market which helped them establish a consumer base, but it also hurt them slightly because they had to use older hardware (DVD drive). Ya win some, ya lose some I guess. Either you're first to market with older tech, or last to market with new tech. Consoles have such a long lifespan compared to other electronics products, so that's just something you have to deal with. Sure, the guts of consoles can be updated (and Microsoft has done that), but you can only take it so far before you start to alienate the consumers that have already bought your product.

My fellow gamers, I present to you the first unbiased analysis of the current console war and its implications.
Thank You

I prefer ps3 over 360, but I'll tell you something, all the recent news about sony is making it hard to trust sonys claim about the future.
For example the memory issue and development issues.
Anyway I agree with tomguisuru, I think if this game gets enough buzz, microsoft will just let them have the 3rd disc.
Doug @ Sep 17th 2008 11:21AM
Nice caption Xav. ;)
Both platforms have their challenges for developers. Should be a great game.
shankelee @ Sep 17th 2008 11:26AM
wow i was really looking forward to this game
RebornJeremiah @ Sep 17th 2008 4:54PM
I don't see why this cannot be done seeing how hd install will be incorporated this fall.
Carmack might be a genius in his time but at this generation there are so many geniuses in game industry and I can only see him making stupid remarks lately to get more publicity. The fact that he makes comment about iphone is better than ps2+xbox is just funny IMO.

I hope all the sites that shouted from the rooftops, that Rage was being gimped because of the 360, without fact checking with id first will put up retractions.
Got to love the speed at which a misquote propagates across the internet these days.
jarhead906 @ Sep 17th 2008 2:45PM
According to the statements from the dev and the information in the article, the game (meaning what is going to be played on all 3 platforms) WAS scaled down/changed BECAUSE of the 360.
"...the game had changed from '5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands.' The change was mostly due to the title shipping on two Xbox 360 discs..."
This means that while in development on all three platforms the 360 dev team realized that they reached the limit and thus had to use two discs, significantly raising the cost...according to what the article is saying.
Did you not notice the sarcasm at the end of the article by the author?
'So, RAGE hasn't been scaled down because of the Xbox 360 ... it was changed because of the Xbox 360. Completely different, people!'

I think the solution here is to treat the system more like a PC, install the content to the hard drive from as many discs as it takes and then just use one of them in the drive to play it. With the new dash update this fall there is no reason why that wouldn't work.
QuasarSquirrel @ Sep 17th 2008 12:37PM
According to some reports that is what id wanted, but microsoft won't let developers require a HDD install.
jarhead906 @ Sep 17th 2008 2:30PM
Well isn't that one reason why you bought a console in the first place?
Because of how it strays away from PC gaming due to constant upgrades and total cost?
No, if one thing changes about console gaming in the years to come, it better not be HDD installations. Since the beginning, you plop in your favorite cartridge/disc and you play. Don't take one step forward and two back.
Simon Magus @ Sep 17th 2008 12:39PM
I don't really mind having to get up and change the disc on my 360. I also thought about the fall update and thought that perhaps you could just install the whole game on the hard drive and play off of one disc. I do agree that DVD9 just wont cut it in about 2 years (well no one said that, just my opinion) because MS wanted to be first. Heck even the now dead HD DVD would have still worked on the games.
Procris @ Sep 17th 2008 1:12PM
Honestly, i couldn't care less about the DVD drive and space of DVDs, instead all i care about is the quality of the game and how fun the game is to play. I honestly doubt Rage on PS3 and Xbox 360 will be all that different. The differences will be extremely minimal and nothing to brag about.
I don't think DVD was the wrong choice for this generation but looking into next gen i think Blu-ray should be the storage of choice for all consoles. You know.. Apart from Nintendo who insist on using out dated hardware for profit, which works for them.
mattclarkie @ Sep 17th 2008 1:22PM
Now that RAGE is nearly out can we please have Quake V because Quake IV was brilliant.
jarhead906 @ Sep 17th 2008 2:36PM
To me this seems like an early sign that the 360 won't be lasting as long as many would like it to.
Xbox = 5 years and no M$ support
Xbox 360 = 5 years and continuing support?
Templar001 @ Sep 17th 2008 3:42PM
Once again they follow the consumer. So much for Blu Ray it doesn't mean jack sh*t if its not used for anything. Well once again the same game.
GTA IV same
Rage same
Bioshock same
CoD4 same
They look the same? Yes so whats the point of Bluray this gen if HD games already look great.
Nick @ Sep 17th 2008 4:12PM
"limitation are inncorrect"
That's innconceivable!
