Molyneux: the PS3 is waiting for a defining title
Game designer - and Microsoft employee - Peter Molyneux said in an interview with GamesIndustryBiz that the PlayStation 3 is still waiting for a game that defines the platform and sets it apart from its competitors.
"Nintendo did a brilliant job of doing that at launch with games like Wii Sports and Wii Play - maybe Fable 2 is a defining title," said the proud father of the upcoming Lionhead RPG who admitted to not being tremendously objective when referring to Fable 2.
Molyneux then stated the PS3-exclusive LittleBigPlanet, which launches a week after Fable 2, has the potential to be a defining title. "I'm incredibly proud of what they've done, and it's just an amazing experience to see how their game has progressed," he said of the Media Molecule developers who are mostly made up of former Lionhead staff.
Sorry flame war lovers, Molyneux just ended classy on y'all!

When you think of the 360, you instantly think of Halo, Gears of War, Fable, and Mass Effect. When you think of the PS3, you think of....Resistance? Maybe MGS? they still need their defining title.
And that's not a fanboy comment. that's just reality.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 21st 2008 12:16PM
Thats bull, Sony have NEVER had "that defining title" on any of the Playstations, let alone the PS3. You personally have your defineing titles.
And I am sorry, but no one thinks of Fable or Mass Effect when you say Xbox 360. They think of Halo, at a push Gears.
Molyneux just thinks he is the god of gameing for some reason.

Jake @ Sep 21st 2008 1:09PM
Just one thing that confuses me, why is this post even on XB360Fanboy? It's about the PS3.
You don't see posts on PS3Fanboy about how crap the 360 is...
Xav de Matos @ Sep 21st 2008 1:24PM
@Jake: The story has two points. One, Molyneux is hoping Fable 2 is a defining title. Two, Molyneux is discussing what he feels Sony doesn't have versus Microsoft and Nintendo. I don't think it has nothing to do with the Xbox just because it focuses on the PS3. Hope that clears it up for anyone.
Jake @ Sep 21st 2008 1:41PM
@Xav de Matos
If what you claim is true, then shouldn't the articles title be " Molyneux thinks Fable2 is the next defining 360 title".
The fact you put the PS3 part as the headline clearly indicates what your true intentions are..
When does the free Vista laptop arrive??
Xav de Matos @ Sep 21st 2008 1:56PM
@Jake: I wasn't aware Vista was a laptop brand.
If it runs anything like the operating system then I'm sure it sucks.
I use a Mac. Have a nice day.
lorddshadow @ Sep 21st 2008 2:03PM
that's really the point of the playstation. instead of finding a mascot and milking the hell out of it, sony just promotes their good upcoming games. i asked 5 gamers what they thought of when i said the word playstation and mostly they either said ps2 or ratchet. when i said xbox 360, they immediately said master chief. for nintendo, they said mario and sometimes link. i guess that's what makes it different. october 21 is gonna be a bad day for my wallet...
JJ @ Sep 21st 2008 12:01PM
Sorry dicknJane but when you say Xbox you think of 2 things Halo or Gears, Mass effect and Fable? Not so much...if at all.
Metal gear has a bigger following than either ME or Fable, heck one could say Resistance does too.
As for defining titles that can be a good or bad thing, I'd rather my console NOT be known for ONE game, but rather a bunch of games that appeal to different people of all types.
CS @ Sep 21st 2008 12:39PM
well you will think of Fable 2 as a defining game for the 360 when comes out in Oct. mkay
Jake @ Sep 21st 2008 12:42PM
LOL, this is typical desperate Microsoft tactics. Getting Microsoft employees going on record to diss the competition.
Funny, I don't see Nintendo or Sony doing the same, they are simply focusing on what THEY are doing, not what everyone else is upto.
Microsoft clearly see a scenario where the 360 will be in distant 3rd place at the end of this gen, and are resorting to sh1ttalking in a desperate attempt to change that.
decapit8 @ Sep 21st 2008 1:04PM
lol fat.
brian @ Sep 21st 2008 1:10PM
Typical, eh?
Oh enlightened one, show us the oh so common other instances.
Where do you even get off making claims like that? You have not the slightest clue what north means to south as east is to west. Stfu./
Jake @ Sep 21st 2008 1:38PM
@ brian, you asked for it.. here goes... The Microsoft shittalking dossier...
http://microsoft-microsoftpr.blogspot.com/
This is just a sample, there is loads of of the useless bile they spew down clueless gamers throats.
How does it feel to be a guliable sheep?
decapit8 @ Sep 21st 2008 1:51PM
hey jake, that may be... but i still think you're fat.
Arnon @ Sep 21st 2008 2:05PM
I find it ironic that you're supporting a different console on a site that does not support it.. now THAT I find desperate :x
Arnon @ Sep 21st 2008 2:07PM
"No wonder the Xbox360 is such a piece of crap, Microsoft spends all it's time shittalking about what everyone else is upto...."
This first line proves to me that no one cares except someone along the lines of a PS3 fanboy.. who's spending more time on the 360's articles and news.. rofl
chad @ Sep 21st 2008 2:18PM
@jake
Do you really believe that nintendo or Sony is not paying attention to the competition? That would be a naive assumption. Anyway I believe all those titles are defining titles... Not necessarily because they are blockbuster sellers (which typically makes titles well known) but the unique gameplay it may have brought to the genre. Just because a game does not first conjure up an image of the console it was developed on does not mean it is not a significant title. Probably half the titles that brought pc gaming to the point it is today is not nessarily well known to most people when it was initially released, much less today.
Serio @ Sep 21st 2008 3:07PM
Actually, Nintendo is the only one innocent i think. Sony actually paid some reviewers to give MGS 4 a good review(Other's stated that they had been offered money by Sony, but declined).
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:49PM
@serio
Any evidence to support that claim?
Roto13 @ Sep 21st 2008 1:00PM
Why would anyone want their console to be defined by one game anyway? Why would Sony want their PS3 to be thought of as The Metal Gear Solid 4 machine?
Jake @ Sep 21st 2008 1:10PM
Indeed, that's the 360's problem (aside from reability and lack of credability), it's regarded as the "Halo box".
It's all first person shooters. Of course Microsoft are trying to change that, with things like Lips and SceneIt, but why settle for 2nd class ripoffs of Buzz and Singstar???
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:04PM
Jack, I totally agree. It's good to know I'm not alone.
Conor @ Sep 21st 2008 1:11PM
I kind of agree,I bought the ps2 because that's where GTA was at the time.
Now I bought the 360 this time around because it had better exclusives than the PS3 with Halo and Gears etc.
I'm not a fanboy as I would went with either systems if they had the right games.Plus I've had the original xbox,ps2 and psone in the past.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 1:51PM
it's funny how people still think of the 360 as a fps console, when 2 of the PS3's biggest upcoming titles are fps games.
i say it time and again, the 360 is the new PS3.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Sep 21st 2008 2:14PM
Sony has two FPS coming out. Resistance & Killzone 2.
Microsoft has built it's popularity on FPS's. Even though they have a good selection of JRPG's the populus of the 360 (America) only wants to play shooters. Even Mass Effect, Too Human and Bioshock were shooters for all of the talk that they were RPGs.
The PS3 has Little Big Planet, Motorstorm PR, SOCOM:Confrontation (3PS), White Knight Chronicles, Tekken 6 & of course Siren this holiday season none of which are FPS.
The 360 has Gears Of War 2 (FPS) & Fable 2 this holiday season.
The fact of the matter is that both consoles are great and both have strengths and weaknesses. But, because of the base of the 360 being America they will always have more FPS's.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 2:22PM
from my understanding, Gears 2 is a 3ps like Socom and the first Gears of War. also Resistance 2 is part of the PS3 lineup this fall and White Knight is Japan only this holiday season.
i think they are about equivalent in the FPS department, especially given the R2 and Killzone 2 hype proving that the PS3 is pretty serious about their involvement in the genre.
j.howlett @ Sep 21st 2008 5:06PM
they have guns in fable 2. just saying.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 5:15PM
they had guns in video games ever since there were video games. i don't see your point. we are talking fps here. so thanks for playing.
j.howlett @ Sep 21st 2008 5:49PM
pong had guns? seriously though i know very well that the 360's library has more than shooters but they are the most played on the system. sony has alot of shooters because of muliplatform releases and trying to capture that "xbox has halo" crowd. all i was jokingly pointing out is that even the games you wouldn't classify as shooters have plenty of gunplay.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 6:23PM
no, but atari games had guns. my point is, that the old moniker about the 360 being a fps console is kinda deflated now that the PS3 is just as demanding with it's fps library. it's true, without Resistance and Killzone, the PS3 may not have the consumer base it does now.
gunplay in games have nothing to do with it, i still don't see your joke/relevancy to what we are talking about here.
Hurricane @ Sep 21st 2008 6:39PM
But if not for Gears of War and Halo, Xbox360 would have no consumer base, everyone buys a 360 for Halo and stays for the library. Its not necessarily the same for PS3
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 7:05PM
uh, yeah it is in this age of exclusive games becoming extinct. the 360 being the more inexpensive way to enjoy these games (that keep becoming multiplat), the PS3 needs that draw.
Hurricane @ Sep 21st 2008 7:41PM
The 360 is less expensive, but during this holiday season it has the draw of having more AAA exclusives and being able to play High Definition Bluray.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 7:56PM
yeah, that is a very good thing for this holiday season. Resistence will be a system seller for some i am sure.
my initial argument wasn't that it wouldn't be successful. it was to debunk the '360 is a fps console' comment since the PS3 is very prominent with FPS love as well.
that the 360 'depends' on fps games is irrelevant since it has a vast library (now) much like the PS2 did in it's day at a similar price.
StingerVI @ Sep 21st 2008 2:21PM
Sony's Playstation series never had 1 genre defining title.
When you think of PS1 its Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII
When you think of PS2 its God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Shadow of the Collusus, Jack and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII, and Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
I guarantee that MGS4, LBP, Heavy Rain, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, White Knight, Dark Cloud 3, ICO 3, Final Fantasy XIII, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII will end up defining PS3.
*Note-Final Fantasy XIII PS3 is already predicted by many for a better success then the 360 version.
When you think of 360 you think Halo and Gears hopefully Fable 2 is gonna live up to the hype and end up on that list.
When you think of Nintendo you think of mainly Mario.
The great thing about Sony is its multiple “genre defining” games and mascots and what not.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 2:31PM
the thing that defined Sony Playstation for me was it's vast library of exclusives and it's cheaper price compared to the competition.
I just don't see that this time around. That's why i jumped ship from the PS2 to 360.
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:56PM
@ryan
I find your comment unfair and a little biased.
How many of those great PS2-defining titles arrived only 1.7 years after the console launched?
Just because there aren't any defining titles on PS3 currently (in your opinion), doesn't mean that in a year's time there won't be plenty to choose from.
Hurricane @ Sep 21st 2008 3:58PM
I have to say that this holiday season ps3 definitely has better looking AAA exclusives than the xbox. Although fable 2 does look really good and gears looks like itll have an huge online following; ps3 has valkarya chronicles, LBP, R2, motorstorm, and not to mention Home is coming out.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2008 5:08PM
that's great!
i don't care about any of those but LBP!
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:02PM
@ryan
Exactly what I expected to hear.
This list goes to prove why Sony doesn't need that one (or two) console defining game(s) to sell a major % of it's consoles; they have tons of great AAA titles that do it for them. Btw, LBP will be that defining title.
informator @ Sep 22nd 2008 1:05AM
Fable is not xbox 360's defining title. Halo is. This is regardless of Fable's quality. People just think Halo when they hear xbox. Either that or they think hardware failure.
