Rumor: Bungie set to release 'next game' teaser trailer [update]

Update: We may have jumped the gun on this one as we have not been able to verify or duplicate this Halo 3 pop-up. In other words, it could have easily been faked. So, we'll tag this story with a fat "RUMOR" tag until further notice. Original blog is as follows;
As the Superintendent countdown ticks the seconds until Bungie's early morning surprise, we're pretty confident tomorrow's announcement isn't going to be a new Halo 3 map pack reveal. Instead,we'll be we may be treated to the official unveiling of Bungie's next project.
As the Superintendent countdown ticks the seconds until Bungie's early morning surprise, we're pretty confident tomorrow's announcement isn't going to be a new Halo 3 map pack reveal. Instead,
The in-game Halo 3 screen grab that you see above, surfaced over on the Bungie.net forums (the thread has since been closed) and is supposedly a Halo 3 pop-up notification that has been seen by gamers in certain time zones. The pop-up (similar to the one used to announce the second title update) is promoting the big Superintendent announcement with instructions to "Download the teaser for our next game" at Bungie.net or the XBLM. We're nearly certain this Halo 3 ad wasn't meant to pop-up until tomorrow morning, but someone's mistake is our knowledge gain. Get ready kids, because Bungie is set to unveil their latest project and we only have a few hours to wait!
[Thanks, Alex H.]

I've been blue-balled long enough!!! Release the friggen announcement!
GammaZero @ Sep 25th 2008 2:07AM
Exactly...At this point it's getting annoying!
Scot Reutzel @ Sep 25th 2008 1:42AM
That picture is fake. Notice the transparent "Halo 3" in the background. Also there's 3 /// after the HTTP.

It's real. That screenshot comes from PartnerNet (copy of Xbox Live) for developers. That picture is from my friends dev kit. The original Bungie.net thread was deleted within 5 minutes. Not locked, DELETED. They have since removed the message (after our thread was deleted), but here are some pictures that were taken from his HDTV:

Also, here is a picture proving that it's his HDTV....

Hope this clears some stuff up, but I guarentee you, come tomorrow, It won't be a rumor anymore :)

Very interesting... With all of this hype, Bungie had bettter have come up with something to actually get hyped about.
West @ Sep 25th 2008 2:40AM
Heh..."friend's," that's what they all say...it's not like you couldn't display the picture on your HDTV any other way...nope, none at all...
I also find it odd that you used two different camera's for the first two and last picture...
Just seems kinda fishy to me.
druggedUK @ Sep 25th 2008 2:58AM
It's not hard to put a picture onto your TV or 360 - you can easily make a picture and then display it on your set...
I'm not convinced.
matt247 @ Sep 25th 2008 3:02AM
Why is there a seem on the right side of the TV? Looks like you just photoshoped the rest of the image so that it would just fit on the TV.
SBBcarl @ Sep 25th 2008 3:05AM
For the record, that guy IS my friend and those ARE my pictures.
And for the technical guy who tries to find the flaws :? here is the pic with the original camera i took the first pics with.

For anyone else that thinks its fake, you have the right to your opinion im okay with that.
Mike @ Sep 25th 2008 9:29AM
Just because he IS your friend, and those ARE your pictures, that doesn't mean you're being honest. Who are you? Why are you on partner net? What makes you so special that you've seen this magical screen no one else has seen?
Tonyh750 @ Sep 25th 2008 4:39AM
This is in no way real. ANYTHING published by a major company would not have as stupid of a typo as "///".
Photoshop success, URL failure
ben @ Sep 25th 2008 5:15AM
Why don't you try writing the URL as written into your browser address bar and see what happens?
Serio @ Sep 25th 2008 5:32AM
Actually, three /// is used by some companies. It's not like it makes a difference. The World of Warcraft website uses it.
SBBcarl @ Sep 25th 2008 4:49AM
Remember those words when you see the same screen tomorrow :)
Sentox6 @ Sep 25th 2008 3:24PM
Looks like this man was right. Just in case anyone forgot :P
Sporia @ Sep 25th 2008 7:47AM
00:02:20:48 Time left , lets see what happens when that hits 00:00:00:00 lol
baxuz @ Sep 25th 2008 9:15AM
i cant see the countdown anymore
Sporia @ Sep 25th 2008 8:20AM
Halo Of Wars , 3rd person would be nice but i think they should do a halo 4 becuase halo 3 was nothing special and it was suppose to use all the power of the 360..... lol. Flat textures ftw!
DBoyFlex @ Sep 25th 2008 8:36AM
the site http:///bungie.net still redirects to bungie, although I do not know why they would put the extra one in as the majority of people recognize web addresses with only 2 of them. either way, I think bungie needs to cut the crap and tell us already. I have a feeling that whatever it is, it is not going to be as innovative as the Halo series WAS. Anyways, I guess I am tired of Halo and that is what bungie does. However, I am open to changing my opinion with evidence of a sweet game. Who wouldn't want another great game to play?
Jack Tretton @ Sep 25th 2008 9:07AM
"We may have jumped the gun on this one..."
Don't worry about it; those hacks at Kotaku do it all the time.
Aegis @ Sep 25th 2008 9:41AM
and the best part about Kotaku is that they don't usually bother correcting themselves afterwards.
Jack Tretton @ Sep 25th 2008 10:07AM
@Aegis
Nope. It must be something they learn at Gawker Media day camp.
Mike @ Sep 25th 2008 9:27AM
I've got a fair bit of experience spotting photoshop jobs - this looks to me like a mediocre photoshop job displayed on a television. I'm sure we'll see a big announcement at the end of the countdown, I don't think it'll be the fancy screen SBBCarl and Vic made up.
Mike @ Sep 25th 2008 9:31AM
Just in case no one else bothered to do this, I peeked at SBBCarl, and Vic's joystiq profile. Guess what? This is the first time either of them has commented here. This smells more and more like a good old fashioned internet hoax.
Zac LaCombe @ Sep 25th 2008 9:41AM
I'm just curious as to why Bungie, the keepers of all things meme-like, would use "Wall of Text" for two sentences. That's like putting "tl;dr" on a one sentence statement.
Will @ Sep 25th 2008 9:51AM
"Fakiness" aside, I hate Bungie for making me wait by my computer for the last 26:20 of the countdown, my cursor hovering over the refresh button... I've become a fanboy. In... 16:26 I may need to go cry about it.

I can't believe I just noticed this: In all the excitement about the countdown, I missed Bungie's text at the top and bottom. "There will be a payoff" and "It won't be a letter." Thanks to Microsoft for that joke being "funny."
Cole Mullenbach @ Sep 25th 2008 10:06AM
1 min!
Boff @ Sep 25th 2008 10:08AM

I waited for this? I don't get it.
HE4VENSENT @ Sep 25th 2008 10:17AM
halo 3 version 2?
Mike @ Sep 25th 2008 10:18AM
Ugh - all the E3 nonsense, TWO countdowns (one failed, one not), and it's a trailer. Sorry Bungie, but you didn't need to work this up so hard - I know it's partly MS's fault, but this is sorta full of fail. It was a neat teaser, but as teasers often do, it didn't explain much. So they teased a teaser from July 'til now - bah.
Boff @ Sep 25th 2008 10:18AM
My first thought was that this tied in with the Legendary ending of Halo3. That is the planet they were drifiting toward and the 'meteors' are debris?
JS @ Sep 25th 2008 10:23AM
It looked like pods to me. The ones that carried the weapons and soldiers? No?
I think it could be a map pack, a true map (or story) editor, or maybe just maybe an expansion pack (new campaign levels!!!) That'd be fuuun, and explain some of the skull achievements AND why there were so many different "levels" achievements (when there are only 3 each in their previous map packs.)

Halo 3 -- Prepare to Drop!!!
Jack @ Sep 25th 2008 3:24PM
This video is odd I did see the city of New Mombasa. So I guess it could be after halo 3 after the city is rebuilt. That or before halo 3 during halo 2 when the city is attacked
sp00ks @ Sep 25th 2008 10:25AM
ugh, what is wrong with everyone...how many other companies are out there that would go through this level of detail to entice its audience. I know its teh internets, but we don't have to over analyze everthing...they could have you know, not released ANYTHING!
