Gears of War isn't a game, it's a platform
Speaking with Videogamer247, Gears of War 2 lead designer Cliff Bleszinski said that the additions to the upcoming shooter are so substantial that it has moved the title beyond being a game and into a "platform.""It's no longer a game: it's a platform," Bleszinski said reiterating that the title was designed for replayability. "Basically you can play through the campaign and then Horde, as well as the many multiplayer modes."
Cliff rounded out the comment by stating again that the title is jam packed with enough content to be enjoyed for "months, if not years, to come." Something tells us he's a fan. Oh yeah, it was Cliff when we spoke to him about Gears of War 2 at X'08 in Toronto.

That's probably the most ridiculous thing he's ever said. I can see Rock Band being called a platform, but Gears? That's like the most generic action game, not saying its not fun, but it's as generic as hell.
El Capitaine @ Sep 30th 2008 9:43PM
Agreed.
I really would love it if he would just be quiet.
Honestly...I would like to hear from some of the OTHER Gears 2 devs...

I'm kinda sick of the game already... but that's just cuz we get so much news about it.

that case mod is the last thing Epic needs to offer in their Gears of War 2 Ultimatum package!!

I think Cliff's been playing with a few too many chainsaws..

Agree with 1,2, and 3.
He needs to shut the hell up and take a seat. Any gamer knows that we enjoy games for years to come...duh? Anyone here still play Super Mario Bros.? Yea, my point exactly. Gears 1 was a mediocre shooter that got overhyped almost as bad as Halo 3 did.
Arnon @ Oct 4th 2008 4:23PM
Although I agree on the hype factor.. both games were incredibly fun.
And don't bring up Super Mario.. Retro games already have their place.

You've been a busy lil beaver today haven't you? Replying to the majority of my comments lol
I didn't mean they weren't fun, but often when you look back on a game after a year or so, you easily pick up on how much they were pushed by marketing or overhyped by many gamers.
I said mediocre because Gears of War just doesn't do it for me. Just my opinion.

To me, platform means something Heavily Expandable or Customizable.
Rock Band, (theoretically) LittleBigPlanet, iTunes, Operating Systems, they all offer extended use through downloadable expansions, regular updates, or an emphasis on user customization to insure continued use.
No doubt Gears 2 has / will have a lot of content on the disc, though you are still relegated to using the same content over and over again. Unless Epic all of a sudden plans on releasing new map packs on a regular basis for a fixed amount of time, or provide steady feedback based updates, than it is the furthest thing from a platform. It's just a great action game, that you may or may not play for "years" (If Gears 1 is any indication, it should have no problem surviving at least two years).
Halo 3 on the other hand, that might get away with the "platform" descriptor.

Waitwaitwait. Play as the Horde. As in the Locust Horde? WHEN WAS THIS ANNOUNCED AND WHY DID I MISS IT THAT IS AWESOME :D
Boff @ Oct 1st 2008 6:57AM
I think he was referring to the Horde mode, rather than actually playing as the Locust Horde.
Horde mode is a 5player co-op mode where you face wave after wave of increasingly tougher enemies.

So, same as any other GAME then really Mr Bleszinski?
I laughed out loud when I read that part.

"Gears? That's like the most generic action game, not saying its not fun, but it's as generic as hell."
--I think you have mistaken this shooter with Resistance 1. By far the most generic and BORING shooter I've ever played.
