MS secures exclusive Tomb Raider episodes

Microsoft just revealed that they've worked out a deal with Eidos to distribute two Tomb Raider: Underworld episodes exclusively through the Xbox Live Marketplace. One set to release this year.
The episodes - one titled "Beneath the Ashes", the other "Lara's Shadow" - will release as episodic DLC sometime after Underworld's November retail release and will provide up to six hours of gameplay per episode. Specifically speaking, "Beneath the Ashes" will release around Christmas time and "Lara's Shadow" will see release in early 2009. Yes sir, exclusivity FTW!

Yay, we get to exclusively pay for stuff.
Why is none of this exclusive stuff either free or on the retail disc?
Odog4ever @ Oct 6th 2008 1:54PM
Just a guess but maybe it's not on the retail disk because it is not finished yet? As for why it's not free, Microsoft wants to make some the money it paid for exclusivity back. In the end it's all about money.

Ok some I will never get. Don't you people realize it takes money to create this stuff? I mean hell you people don't complain when whose ridiculously overpriced reskined maps in Halo 3 & Call of Duty 4 we're released.
Plus developing games are expensive, suppose this game doesn't do well as Legend and they can't afford to give them away for free. So they make it up by selling some cheap expansions.
Plus I'd rather pay 10 bucks for 6 hours of gamepay than 65.

I never buy DLC as 99% of it should have been in the original game, and the developers are using the internet age as a way of releasing unfinished games, and then charging you extra to play the finished game.
Devin @ Oct 6th 2008 1:47PM
Ok.....what's the point of this? Why is MS pouring money into adding more levels in a 3rd party title vs. using it for their own 1st-party, in-house titles?
Devin @ Oct 6th 2008 3:50PM
I guess the thing is really, why does it matter if the episodes are exclusive? Was it worth MS's money and time to make them XBLM-exclusive?
ryan @ Oct 6th 2008 3:20PM
i really don't know, i mean it's not like this is going to be a system seller like GTA4 was planned out to be. in the end it is more incentive for hardcore fans of the series to opt for the 360 version.
Devin @ Oct 6th 2008 3:51PM
Achievements should be plenty incentive I would think....
ryan @ Oct 6th 2008 4:17PM
well, if trophies happen on the PS3 then this will be more incentive for the hardcore.
Van Faulk @ Oct 6th 2008 7:02PM
You do know Halo 3 is getting an expansion, right?
That seems to completely ocntradict everything you just said.
ryan @ Oct 7th 2008 12:15AM
that technically does contradict everything he just said, but seeing as how Halo pretty much filled Microsoft's box with life support from day one, i'd be more inclined not to compare it to something like Tomb Raider.
and MS published Halo 3 and all.
Dan @ Oct 6th 2008 1:51PM
im actually glad all this dlc isnt coming to the PS3 on all these games because I would end up buying them and spending twice what the game was worth
ryan @ Oct 6th 2008 3:15PM
yay, let's be glad we don't have the choice to buy or not to buy extra content because it's not forced on us in the first place.
let's also continue to spin how the PS3 doesn't need exclusive content and that we would be more inclined to buy extra DLC had it come to pass. thank god.
Jake @ Oct 6th 2008 1:59PM
Isn't this just a poor mans Uncharted?
pibs @ Oct 6th 2008 2:18PM
And isn't Drake just a water down Indiana Jones?
Devin @ Oct 6th 2008 2:20PM
Jake, what do you mean? The game will cost $60, just as Uncharted did. Sure it may not have the production costs attached to it like Uncharted, but that doesn't give anyone the right to degrade it.....hell the graphics look amazing from the screenshots I've seen so far....
Both games over completely different experiences/storylines/characters/etc.
Devin @ Oct 6th 2008 3:52PM
@pibs
Considering I own the game, I am going to have to say No. Also, please don't be like Jake or you'll only make things worse.....
AJ @ Oct 6th 2008 2:20PM
Is it just me or have they made Croft's shoulders narrower and narrower over the last few games? It's like she's got this big bust, wide-ass, child-birthin' hips and narrow shoulders that couldn't even hold her back-pack up. She is proportioned like Celine Dion (pear shaped, non-athletic) now, where she used to be proportioned like Carmen Electra (Hour-glass).
Oh yeah... I couldn't care less about DLC for a Tomb Raider game. There now my comment is relavent.

Here's a question: where does Laura order her over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders? For as big as they are, they never seem to get in the way, y'know....except for the camera....
gloomcookie @ Oct 8th 2008 11:11AM
I'm a Tomb RAider whore so this is good news for me. Good to see Lara well on course for re-taking her crown from twobit ripoffs like Drake.
SlomOcean @ Oct 7th 2008 1:29AM
I will be cancelling my preorder of the PS3 version. I will not be picking this one up till it hits the bargain bin.
Eyekiss @ Oct 7th 2008 5:06AM
This has sent so many of the hardcore fans over the edge. Oh well.
I'll be buying this game the day it comes out, and the expansions as soon as they're released, this is AWESOME.
