TGS 08: Halo 3 Recon lands Fall 2009 [Update]

Microsoft has just confirmed the speculation that the teaser trailer released by Bungie a few weeks ago is in fact a storyline expansion to Halo 3. Taking place prior to the events of the Halo 3 story, Halo 3 Recon (its official title) will put gamers in the shoes of a UNSC marine trooper -- specifically an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper -- and marks the first time since players took on the role as the Arbiter to play through the Halo universe as a character other than the Master Chief.

Halo 3 Recon, the standalone expansion featuring a new hero and new campaign, hits the Xbox 360 exclusively in Fall 2009.

[Update: According to an Xbox.com News Flash, Halo 3 Recon will take place during the events leading to the return of Master Chief to New Mombasa in Halo 3. The game will feature a brand new campaign, four player co-op gameplay and new multiplayer content. Halo 3 Recon will include exclusive new multiplayer maps and Forge options as well as maintain what gamers loved from Halo 3 including Saved Films, screenshots and campaign scoring.]

Not surprised, but what the heck is Mythic then? Isn't there supposed to be something this Winter as DLC for Halo 3 ? There are those other cheevos...

The Mythic map pack is not related to Halo 3 Recon.

So it is basically just another map pack with skulls and what not? So what then is Mythic? I was wondering cause I thought the teaser was related to the new DLC, not a whole new game.

I would venture to guess that added options for Halo multiplayer will be downloaded off a Halo 3 Recon disc and added to Halo 3 proper.

Like the Halo 2 map pack expansion disc.

But, that is just speculation.

Think of it as more of an updated halo 3 multiplayer, cuz by then it'll be 2 years old

That still doesn't change the fact that many people will switch from halo 3 to halo 3 recon and some won't, splitting it in 2. Halo 3 maps might not be in Halo 3 Recon, so you would have to disc swap to play maps on the other version. A downloadable expansion would have been best.

well were gunna be able to download games from the disc to the hard drive, so maybe you hafta download one game and then insert the disk to play a combined multiplayer. kinda like morrowind-bloodmoon/tribunal, or even oblivion-shivering isles

like Unreal 3 for PS3? but man, i'm playing Oblivion again on PC with mods and it's alot more fun than my 360 copy. i wish for mod support too.

Doesn't it seem like a long announcement lead time for a simple expansion? It seems like Bungie will have to work hard to keep the hype machine going for a year on this one.

Agreed, I would have figured this would have been coming out in Spring 09 or something. One year for an expansion pack is a long time to wait but leave it to Bungie to work their fans up into a froth and make them wait a year.
