as super slick as those slow-mo critical hits are, i hope there is an option to take them off or keep it in first person. just for the sake of immersion and faster gameplay.

also i think it would get old seeing that over an over for every critical hit you do. just IMO though.

Can't wait for Fallout 3 -- esp. b/c I live in the DC area and work in DC. This video has the look of the metro system right. Makes me wonder what kind of condition my office will be in :-)

So, the VATS system cannot be used for every kill? Or can it? Just curious. It seems like something that would need to somehow be recharged to prevent us from using it every time as that would make things a bit easier. Just wondering if we know how that works yet. If you somehow have already played the game feel free to share as well.

I have not played the game, but my understanding is that it works like the previous games in the series. You have a set amount of action points and once those are used up you have to wait for those to refresh. Action points cover any movement, so it covers attacks, actual movement of your character, use of items, etc.

the vats are available at anytime in the game. if you do not wish to use it you don't have to. you can simply play it as a first person shooter. you cant watch the vats in first person. but you do have the option to play the game in first or third person view. domonation.com

Yeah, that makes sense. I was not sure cause it does not look like we need points to move and shoot or anything like that (it is more like oblivion than the previous fallouts), but using the VATS with action points would make sense. Good idea.

i had heard in one of the articles i read that the action points will "replenish fast enough that a player can use VATS exclusively for combat". but leads me to wonder if you come across a swarm of enemies, is it possible to take them all out with VATS? cuz if so, i don't think action points will be in that short of supply.

Yea, you're right about it being more like Oblivion. Maybe it is turned based in the sense that it limits how quickly you can do actions rather than being truly turn based. I am very curious to see how this works as well. I can't wait for this game! I put close to one hundred hours into Oblivion and I am not even a big fantasy fan. I sure love me some Apocalypse though! ;)

Regarding the VATS system..
You can't turn off the 3rd person switching even if you're in 1st person. The switch is inevitable.
And...
It works on a series of action points. Different weapons take up different number of AP's therefore a sledgehammer takes up loads while a pistol doesn't. Over time, the AP's go back up/recharge so your limit to how many you can use in a battle. Certain perks raise the number of AP's available or their recharging times.
Make sense?

perfect sense. i was just hoping it would stay in first person.
i guess i'll be playing in 3rd person then.
Gr0wTesK @ Oct 13th 2008 6:40PM
Ryan. When VATS is going on, you're not actually playing. it's like a small cutscene. you see your character, but once it's out of VATS slow mo, you're back in 1st person. you never have to actually play in 3rd.

Am I really the only one that thinks this gameplay is lame?
I don't want a flame war, you can like it if you want, but I really don't think it looks that fun....seems really slow....
Tell me some things that might make me want this game, cause i'm not seeing anything...

That looked balls. The shitty kind.

I'm not sure what to feel, I'm about to cancel my preorder. I do love Fallout, I still play 1 or 2 at least once a year. However this comabt meh, they charge straight at you, stop and point and shoot, or stop point and swing their arms. It seems like you could dodge and avoid every attack they throw with ease. JUST like Oblivion.
I mean it still has a bit of the turnbased cross your fingers 'ohhh come on critical!' is still there. Seeing as it looks ten times easier to crit than to unload a clip into someone you may feel like you should use it. I'm thinking this game is more story than action still, even though Bethesda tried to go more action and failed....
