NXE storage solution: Free 512MB memory card or cheap 20GB HDD
Last week, Microsoft informed us that they'd be offering a "storage solution" to Xbox 360 Arcade and Core owners who didn't have 128MBs of storage to install the New Xbox Experience. We now have those storage solution specifics.Microsoft just launched a new Xbox Storage Upgrade website where Arcade and Core owners can request their storage solution. All you have to do is enter your console's serial number and ID, then the system will check to make sure your console isn't an Elite or Pro. Some are reporting that the system knows if you have a HDD connected and will deny your storage upgrade, so be careful. Once your console is verified to be lacking 128MBs of storage, you'll be given a special offer based on which console you own. The storage solution offers are:
- Xbox 360 Acade owners: Refurbished 20GB HDD + 3 months of Xbox Live for $30.
- Xbox 360 Core owners: 512MB memory card for free OR refurbished 20GB HDD for $20

They should let 20GB owners upgrade to 60GB or 120GB for a small fee if we send in our 20GB drives (after transferring data, of course) so they will have more to sell to Arcade and core owners.
Venas Rotas @ Oct 14th 2008 2:02PM
I second that! Or why don't they make a usb external hdd enclosure where you can put in your own hard drive of any storage capacity! I wouldn't mind paying $35 for an enclosure. it would be like the hd dvd add-on.

Xbox 360 Acade owners: Refurbished 20GB HDD + 3 months of Xbox Live for $30.
thats what you guys say, yet when i entered in my xbox arcades info, it offered me the 20 dollar deal only
DBoyFlex @ Oct 14th 2008 9:05AM
Target was selling new 20 gigs for 25 bucks the last time I was there. Thats a pretty good deal, too.
JAmerican @ Oct 14th 2008 1:58PM
I bought my 20 GB a year ago for $20 on eBay lol. I got it replaced for a 60GB one with my Best Buy PRP :).
monkeymonkeymonkey @ Oct 14th 2008 1:35AM
what about us Pro owners that have hardly any space left on our hdd? For crying out loud, 20GB is a joke, give us a deal for more space MS!
bingo @ Oct 14th 2008 4:20AM
Err why? You have enough space already...imho what MS are doing here should be comended. Its about time they took care of their customers like this.
birdshake @ Oct 14th 2008 7:11AM
20gb is a joke? I have all the Halo dlc and I also have bought 42 arcade games and still have 7.2gb left. What the hell are you doing? Downloading whole seasons of tv shows?
Forest Law @ Oct 14th 2008 9:22AM
Microsoft says that bluray disc and other physical media arent the way of the future, so they better provide enough storage to allow a person to download whole seasons
ryan @ Oct 14th 2008 10:51AM
how can any of you guys say that 20gb is enough when the console
ships with only 11. somethingGB available?
it's so not enough for all the content + ability to install games.
throw the 20gb owners a frickin bone here MS!
monkeymonkeymonkey @ Oct 14th 2008 10:52AM
@bingo,
I have all of the Halo 3 DLC, a handful of GH3 and Rock Band DLC, about 5 full XBLA games, and a couple of TV shows. I have about 2GB left of space. Yep, 2GB. If you think 20GB is "enough" in todays world, then you are either a 80 year old geezer or a clueless 12 year old. Sorry if I sound harsh, but 20GB is a joke.
Kevin PSN: Keviseg15 @ Oct 14th 2008 11:59AM
i have 250 gigs cuz of my ps3 hahah
microsoft should of let u guys use laptop hard drives.
it would of been better or why dont u guys use like an external hard drive, i cant complain yet as i recently got a 60 gb xbox myself.
Mazrael @ Oct 14th 2008 1:32PM
20 GB is a joke.. I got the elite, 120GB, with 70.4GB left.. maybe not a bit deal for me..
but in 2 years, I have -
Games save/content - 18.8GB
Demos - 2GB
Videos - 9GB
My Profile - 17MB
Gamer pics/Themes -110MB
& system items - 5MB
weighs in at 29GB a lot more than the starting 14GB on the 20GB.. 11GB is actually xbox 1 games
(rest is music)
And for anyone who doesn't know.. the 360 HDD is a notebook hard drive.. why they can't let us buy a (over priced) case to put our own in...I'd be happy with that, I'd buy a faster one.. some out there are (a slow) 5600rpm, some 7200rpm.. 5600rpm I think is still faster than the DVD disc..
UNSCleric @ Oct 14th 2008 1:41AM
Couldn't someone just go into a store and look at the serial number for one of the systems yet to be sold?
FrankTheTank @ Oct 14th 2008 1:58AM
How are you going to do that, isn't the serial number secured on the console inside the box? I don't think you can read it from the outside.
sean @ Oct 14th 2008 1:57AM
you need the console id as well
UNSCleric @ Oct 14th 2008 2:03AM
You can read it from the outside actually, all you have to do is lift up the cardboard tab and you can see the sticker. That's how people used to check to see when the Xbox 360 they were about to purchase was manufactured.
Brian @ Oct 14th 2008 5:04AM
you don't get both info from under the tab.
Swampfox23 @ Oct 14th 2008 1:58AM
I bought a 20 gig already for my arcade, does that mean I can't apply for the $30 one?
Tann @ Oct 14th 2008 2:26AM
try it anyway
you should still be able to get one cos you have an arcade/core
Andrew @ Oct 14th 2008 11:11AM
That didn't work for me. I even tried it with my HDD disconnected.
Clinton RRoD sept.3 @ Oct 14th 2008 2:04AM
what i was reading on joystiq is that if you put the 2o gb hard drive on already it wont work. it will tell you , you have enough space
birdshake @ Oct 14th 2008 7:14AM
They really don't have anyway to know if you have a 20gb hard drive unless they have some crazy detection system.
Either/or I have a arcade with a 20gb and entered my information into the site and got the 20gb + 3 months of xbox live offer.
Devise @ Oct 14th 2008 7:32AM
I bet you that the last update, the NXE preparation update, enabled HDD detection. It would make alot of sense.
Jayenkai @ Oct 14th 2008 2:10AM
*phew*!
Shin @ Oct 14th 2008 2:33AM
Does it work for people in europe too, or only USA-only offer?
Thanks
smi04 @ Oct 14th 2008 3:30AM
Works for Australia but no 3 month Live offer, only the 20gb drive for $25. Just ordered mine.
maty @ Oct 14th 2008 12:48PM
At the top of the webpage when you enter your Console Serial Number etc, there should be a drop-down box. Select United Kingdom or whatever ^^.
PimpDaddy Stevan @ Oct 14th 2008 3:38AM
So, any idea how long they'll keep this going?
Doug @ Oct 14th 2008 3:43AM
Just did it. Got the $30 deal.
Not a bad deal considering 20gb Pro models were $259 when I bought my $199 Arcade.
Gamertag: GOPAL892005 @ Oct 14th 2008 4:25AM
i just tried it using the serial of my Core & it doesnt give me any offers : (
maybe its because i have already got a 512mb & 120GB HDD connected to my system.
but i want that extra memory card :p
Jayenkai @ Oct 14th 2008 4:27AM
Yup, works in UK. £12.99 for the 20Gig, no Live offer, no 512Mb offer.. But... bargain, none the less..
Gamertag: GOPAL892005 @ Oct 14th 2008 4:32AM
have you ever connected a Hard Drive or Memory Unit to your console?
Jayenkai @ Oct 14th 2008 5:22AM
Bog standard 256Mb card that came with it. Other than that, no.
h0mi @ Oct 14th 2008 6:06AM
I have a premium and an arcade. I moved the HDD to the arcade and also had a 512mb memory card, so I'm not eligible for this. Even though my premium now lacks a HDD and has less than 128mb in memory attached to it currently. But i'd much rather buy a 60gb hdd than buy a 2nd 20gb drive, even if the 60gb is overpriced.
NEXT TIME? @ Oct 14th 2008 6:30AM
According to our records you own a console which has enough memory to connect to Xbox LIVE and live the new Xbox Experience. *******************************
The next time you turn on your Xbox 360 console and connect to Xbox LIVE you will receive the update. Have fun!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^WTF?
Jayenkai @ Oct 14th 2008 6:33AM
Wha....?!!?!
...
.......
..
Does it?!
myabsolution @ Oct 14th 2008 6:46AM
Oh how the times have changed.
I remember when buying a core model was probably the worst money sink; after buying that expensive 20gb HDD, getting a headset, getting the newer HD-equipped AV cable, you were essentially paying more than you would have, had you gone for the Premium right off the bat.
Not anymore.
For $199, now you get a free 512MB Memory Card or $20 - 20GB HDD? Hello! Good value.
Props to MS for actually doing this, they very easily could have forced payment upon HDD-less people.
joker ant @ Oct 14th 2008 7:03AM
This is perfect. I have a new Arcade now, so I can get the cheap-ass HDD and Live. My bro has my old Core, so I can also get the 512MB MU. *THEN* I can give my 64MB MU to my friend for his profile. After all that, I'd have a 20G HDD, 512MB MU, 256MB MU, 3 months of Live, my bro will still have his 20G HDD, and my friend gets my soon-to-be-useless 64MB MU. Microsoft is so good to me.
Maxwell @ Oct 14th 2008 8:35AM
My pro shat the bed last week with the red rings of death, and so I went out and bought an arcade version on Friday.
Just bought a 20 gig drive and 3 months of LIVE for $29.
Aw yeah.
HazyCloud @ Oct 14th 2008 9:00AM
Bravo, Microsoft. +1 for you.
chase @ Oct 15th 2008 1:04PM
I had a pro console back when it first came out and it broke about a year ago so I purchased the arcade system and kept the harddrive... took out the harddrive and tried the website and it said I had enough storage for the new xbox... so yeah...
BobTheElephant @ Oct 14th 2008 4:22PM
i'd still try it regardless but...I just attempted to get a deal for my arcade(which I have plugged a 20gb HDD into) and I was told "Congratulations! According to our records you have the necessary hardware and storage space to enjoy the new Xbox Experience. " Just figured I'd let people know.
SLEEPAH @ Oct 14th 2008 10:15AM
I just bought my arcade, and this offer is not available for CANADA! THAT IS SO STUPID
Darien @ Oct 14th 2008 11:15AM
It is available to Canadians. Just switch your country to Canada at the top at you get the Canada page.
That's what I did and I have my 20GB + 3 Months of Live coming to me.
Rick @ Oct 14th 2008 10:16AM
I just got the 20GB hard Drive (says it's refurbished) for $21.39 with shipping included.
L @ Oct 14th 2008 10:45AM
"Congratulations! According to our records you have the necessary hardware and storage space to enjoy the new Xbox Experience. "
how do they know i have a HD?? :S dam!! i was looking a HD for my other core system!!!!
GAr!
Octantis @ Oct 14th 2008 10:46AM
Any word on when the 60GBs are coming out and at what price?
DBoyFlex @ Oct 14th 2008 10:51AM
Not sure when, but they (x3f) said there might be a deal with a 60 gig, and 3 months or a year of live (I think 3 months) and a headset for 99 bucks. That is better than the 20 gigs were. Sorry, I do not feel like digging through old posts to find it though. No release stated other than possibly October, which is halfway through with no word. Try looking on ebay, I know there are some there.
