Call of Duty: World at War beta impressions
Jack Bauer yelled at me last night. Well, technically it wasn't really him but the commander's voice who calls in artillery strikes and rabid dogs for the Americans as portrayed by Canadian television superhero Keifer Sutherland in the multiplayer beta for Call of Duty: World at War. After releasing last week we decided to spend some extra time to develop our thoughts on the highs and lows of Treyarch's upcoming shooter. Jump in for more footage and our thoughts on the beta version of the multiplayer experience.
Call of Duty: World at War is the upcoming shooter from Treyarch that brings of the series back to its World War II roots. Utilizing the engine that debuted with the successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, World at War hopes to capture some of the multiplayer magic found in the modern Infinity Ward developed title.
World at War looks similar to, and in some cases better than, Modern Warfare with different map environments that showcase solid lighting effects. The major difference between World at War and Modern Warfare is gameplay.
Yes, both titles have the same control scheme and abilities – sprinting and knife kills included – but the era changes the way the game performs. The core difference if the feel of battle due to the authentic World War II weaponry. Many of the weapons of the era were both low capacity and slow firing and this detail is not lost on World at War. In the beginning this adds to the strategy of battle but soon unlocking attachments bring a sense of familiarity as many feel specifically included to bring players a nearly identical experience to Modern Warfare.
World at War feels a lot like Modern Warfare; it isn't a problem but it leaves us feeling that World at War is being developed as a copy rather than its own experience. Certain aspects of the online experience are different in World at War but are showing early stages of frustration. Located on Roundhouse, one of the three maps in the online beta, two players can jump into a tank and bring the opposition to its knees. It looks as though the map was designed with enough peaks and valleys to offset a tank-killing spree but the vehicle feels extremely overpowered. While weaponry exists to rid the map of the treaded menace they either force a long set up time (multiple rockets) or getting too close (anti-tank designed grenade) and often result in multiple deaths. It also doesn't help that Roundhouse has already been glitched by players who have discovered a way to go under the map undetected and have the ability to kill anyone and never be killed.
Jumping into the experience we wanted to check out the highly touted weapon that set the game apart from its Modern Warfare brethren, the M2 Flamethrower. Unfortunately for us – but probably for the best of the experience – the weapon has been assigned as a Level 65 perk. Other perks in the game are essentially renamed perks from Modern Warfare with a few original items; again leaving us feeling we're playing a Modern Warfare expansion rather than its own game.
The beta includes three maps: Roundhouse, Castle and Makin. As mentioned above, Roundhouse includes a pair of tanks – one per side – and takes place at a train yard that appears to have seen the wrong end of an artillery strike. Castle is a large area map with a bombed out building in the southern region and Makin takes place on the waterfront at night. The majority of our time was spent on Makin and while it became our favorite of the three maps other players almost always vetoed it.
Special bonuses are still available in the game for multiple kills. The most interesting of the additions is a pack of rabid dogs that hunt the opposition has replaced the lurking helicopter from Modern Warfare. The dogs may sound like a strange addition and while they are less powerful than the helicopter they include the added bonus of leading players to the enemy if followed which balances out the ability – on the flip side defenders are able to kill the wave of dogs who usually take 2-3 bites out of a soldier before they fall for good. Hearing a group of angry dogs barking for your blood in the distance as the fight rages on works and it adds a much needed unique twist to the experience.
From our short time with the beta we were left thinking there are some good ideas with the multiplayer mode of World at War but we hope that Treyarch can find a way to differentiate itself from its successful modern cousin. The game attempts to feel as familiar as possible in so many ways that some of the additions or differences feel difficult to grasp in the beginning when it shouldn't be so easily compared to begin with.
In the end we're willing to agree the era and weaponry warrant a solid multiplayer experience but as it stands we've walked away feeling Treyarch wanted to stick so closely to Modern Warfare the game may have a difficult time setting itself apart as the unique experience as we'd hoped it would. Sticking closely to Modern Warfare may not be a bad idea considering the experience was so well developed but the problem with that is we're already playing that game and it's already sitting on our shelf.

Nice impression! I am so looking forward to getting this game! =)
Mikey G @ Oct 20th 2008 5:22PM
I still don't get why anyone is saying this game being like COD4 is a bad thing at all. Look at any game that has sequels, they are usually alike, the only time people change things is when its broken, and COD4 is far from broken. Also to everyone who is saying this is just expansion maps with new weapons, Did you forget about a whole new campaign mode with 4 player co-op?
Sorry I attached this to the first guy :-P I r cheater.
eric @ Oct 20th 2008 11:07AM
I hate those dogs! They are a seemingly neverending wave of death for me...
TheGizmo95 @ Nov 5th 2008 9:23PM
One time I was cornered by those things...Roundhouse...Pinned against a wall...Four of them heading straight for me...I knew I was dead because I unforunately had two Bolt-Actions. Tried to snipe'em but they started biting my arms...my legs were torn apart...I could see the bone...No, don't take me back...DON'T TAKE ME BACK!!! I can smell the blood...The FEAR!!! AUAUAAUUGUGHGHG!!!!!11!!1!!
Then I respawned and was like "yay :D".
Justin W @ Oct 20th 2008 11:07AM
The only thing i want to add, is that you haven't experienced terror till you're in the middle of a battle, and you can see dogs running at you while playing hardcore. One bite from the dog and you're gone. I'm tired of modern warfare. Infinity ward has let us all down by their lack of DLC or even playlist changes.
Jim Halpert DM @ Oct 20th 2008 11:12AM
Let "us" all down? Speak for yourself, I'm satisfied. By the way, they have been testing new playlist for months now.
TORO @ Oct 20th 2008 11:42AM
I wouldn't say I'm tired but maybe looking for a new experience, nothing GoW2 couldn't fix.
Justin W @ Oct 20th 2008 11:57AM
Sorry Jim, I didn't realize people were still getting pissy over one word these days. I too have been happy with CoD4, but when you compare the amount of DLC infinity ward has given us compared to Halo 3, it makes infinity ward look like fisher price. Granted I'm not a huge halo fan anymore, but people like us (sorry, don't want to group you in the US catergory), erm, people like ME, who played cod4 every day, are what helped bring it to the most played xbox live game. They could at least kick it into high gear with the PR stuff for some DLC.
I know they've been working on some new playlist changes, woopdy doo! I'm sure they'll release those right at holiday season to try and keep some people playing cod4. Honestly, I'm gonna pick up world at war and play the hell out of it. And when I'm tired of it, I'll go back to cod4. Maybe then they would have actually changed something.
Grant @ Oct 20th 2008 12:25PM
Yeah, stupid game only providing me with a year of playability! what were they thinking!
Seriously? personally i've done over 48 hours of online game time and probably about half of that in single player. Any game that can give you good game play for over 30 hours these days is well worth it these days.
Grant @ Oct 20th 2008 12:29PM
"but when you compare the amount of DLC infinity ward has given us compared to Halo 3, it makes infinity ward look like fisher price"
But you can't compare the two, H3 was the highest profile game launch for xbox ever, with more money put towards it and more after thought than any game before. COD4 had a ton of hype, but it didn't have the amount of financial or personnel support need to create the same amount of content. The halo franchise is just as much MS's baby as it is Bungie's, the COD series is just another game for MS.
offday @ Oct 20th 2008 4:10PM
I agree. They could make a lot more money if they would just release some more maps like Halo. I'm done with Halo, though. Bungie has been sucking it up lately with stupid decisions.
Alex @ Oct 20th 2008 11:14AM
Friend gave me a beta key. I played it for about an hour and then went back to COD4. In my opinion, it's not enough of a change to go from COD4 to COD5, at least as far the multiplayer is concerned. I also thought the weapons were very unbalanced when compared to COD4. I shot a guy no less than 6 times with a Thompson within 10 seconds time, and he kills me with two shots from his BAR (no headshot). He didn't have juggernaut, so I don't know what happened there.
Grant @ Oct 20th 2008 12:32PM
pray and spray maybe?
out of effective range for a Thompson?
a BAR is a rifle and a Thompson is an SMG, so while the BAR fires slower, it has higher damage, range, and accuracy.
Alex @ Oct 20th 2008 3:24PM
No, that's what was annoying about the whole thing. I wasn't pray and spraying. On the big map with the tanks on it, this guy was up on one of those catwalks lying prone. He apparently didn't see me. I was crouched with the Thompson, took careful aim at his head, and fired multiple 1-2 bullet bursts. As I said, I hit him at least six times. He finally caught on that someone was shooting at him and took me out with two shots. I was well within range and regardless, I HIT HIM AT LEAST SIX TIMES with carefully aimed shots. He was prone, so all I could really see was his head. I guess I only hit him in the pinky six times.
ryan @ Oct 20th 2008 11:28AM
@0:35 was that a knife sound effect or someone bobbing for apples? perhaps the axis power is made out of wood? sounded pretty...comical...and not like stabbing a knife into flesh at all.
also, we can now call in pack of dogs?? lol
xenocidic @ Oct 20th 2008 11:31AM
lol, i thought i recognized the voice but wasn't sure
that's awesome
a must buy now
goo goo @ Oct 20th 2008 11:37AM
If Treyarch can iron out the glitches and perhaps the annoying millisecond delay between shooting somene and their dropping, it will be a great game.
I think most of us were largely disappointed with the bonus maps in COD4 so this 'update' (or perhaps 'backdate') will be eagerly anticipated.
Cant wait till Nov 14th.
joeybeast @ Oct 20th 2008 12:57PM
the delay is probably a new feature.
MrMuggs @ Oct 20th 2008 11:45AM
It's a cool game and while it's a bonus that the gameplay mechanics are nearly identical to COD4 it also makes it feel like I've been there and done that. If no other games were coming out I would pick it up but with so many games coming out in November, namely GOW2, I don't see this game getting much traction.
ZEBRA NINER @ Oct 20th 2008 11:47AM
rabid.
Seems cool, can't wait to try it.
fernando @ Oct 20th 2008 11:47AM
totally lame . i feel so frustrated that smartA** players with the turbo trigger can kill you with the slowest and steady: the first rifle (SVT-40) or the G3 rifle weapon on COD 4. The glitch of Roundhouse makes the game impossible to win when the whole team is hiding under it. the artillery takes way to long to land and when it finally does nobody gets hit is just guess where the enemy are and shoot there. Tanks are so hard to destroy when you are about to destroy it the enemy can get out so fast that you are death no matter what, even thought you die 5 times trying to destroy it. well this are the points that it needs to be improve and i'm not the only one who thinks so. for me it feels like a bad copy of COD 4 and i might consider on switch to gears 2
joeybeast @ Oct 20th 2008 11:50AM
I was playing the Beta and it felt something was missing.
I popped in COD 4 and the control just felt a little bit tighter, or it could just be the guns.
WTFox @ Oct 20th 2008 11:53AM
As a huge fan of COD4, I am glad to hear that there are more similarities than differences between the two games. Why fix something that isn't broken?
Doug @ Oct 20th 2008 12:01PM
I am very happy to be in the beta. But...
-Sound: The game is too quiet. The game lacks the drama and energy of COD4. Doesn't feel urgent, except when the dogs come out.
-Gameplay: Feels like an arcade version of COD4. Maybe the brighter colors contribute to this, but there's a lack of seriousness & gravity.
World At War takes too much from COD4, but it also misses the best thing about it. You don't get the photo-realistic, battle-simulation effect from COD4, which was the mind-blowing part of the game.
Treyarch probably was told to copy COD4, so it's not necessarily their fault, but you can't create a great game following someone else's formula. You have to break more rules than were broken here, if any were actually broken.
Geomar Morales @ Oct 20th 2008 12:55PM
Unforutnately i was ver dissapointed with the Beta. Yes it is fun to play but so is CoD4. It seems this is the same game as CoD4 with updated art work. Its almost like buying the same book with a different cover. Simply put, adding a few dogs is not enought for me to buy this game vs. Gears of War 2 or Fabel (which release around the same time). If you own CoD4 and have to make a choice, you can wait for CoD5 for Christmas!
Fire Fawkes @ Oct 20th 2008 1:17PM
I liked the beta. The multiplayer feels more like an expansion pack for COD4 (Now with not so modern combat!) but when you're building on a winning formula there is nothing really wrong with that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, some could say.
Doug @ Oct 20th 2008 1:31PM
you could also say, if it ain't different, don't bother.
David @ Oct 20th 2008 1:37PM
PLEASE FIX THE GLITCH ON ROUNDHOUSE!!!
the fact that someone can travel and kill underground is ruining the experience of playing that map
Frank @ Oct 20th 2008 1:46PM
GoW2 is prob gonna be bought for me, since i already have CoD4
Carbonize @ Oct 20th 2008 2:17PM
And what does that have to do with the price of fish?
Mattchewie @ Oct 20th 2008 2:26PM
I did have this game on reserve but after playing the Beta, I canceled it and put my 5 bucks on deadspace.
Though I did have fun playing, it just feels like playing COD4 with a WWII mod. Which I don't think warrants paying 60 bucks for.
Navel47 @ Oct 20th 2008 2:50PM
Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland to be exact, needs sure gets mad when your team loses.
ESD3 @ Oct 20th 2008 3:13PM
You can tell Xav was not the one playing in the video. Little sad at the lack of the noob tube shots. Surly this game has a equal of it that is what made the COD 4 video worth watching.
Andrew @ Oct 20th 2008 3:20PM
Going to WWII seems like a step backward to me.
Jarvis Slacks @ Oct 20th 2008 4:19PM
Noob-Tube! Oh, wait. Nevermind.
Peff @ Oct 20th 2008 4:24PM
feels a lot like call of duty 3 to me. it might be just the time period, but its hurting what call of duty 4 fixed for the franchise.
Ben @ Oct 20th 2008 6:31PM
Remember ya'll it's only capped at level 24 right now
cjay @ Oct 21st 2008 2:41AM
great game yes it feels like cod4 but that not a bad thing I'm interested to see the other weapons also there right about the tanks my team was getting owned by those things I also think they could have just put out a map pack for cod4 but oh well I'm still buying this day1 I'll probably still play cod4 as well but overall so far so good.
Brucie B @ Oct 21st 2008 8:42AM
Thanks but I'll wait for COD6 - by IW.
I'd rather have GOW2 then COD4 -1.2 made by Treyarch.
NitroFrost @ Oct 21st 2008 7:39PM
COD:WaW is not a game its a Mod of COD4 treyarch can't put out something original so they just made a mod. This game will be decent because of it being a mod of COD4 but still why can't they make up there own hud and many other things and become different O yea because they did that once and it was the worst COD ever!
on a side note to the people that flame me hating treyarch re-play COD3 and tell me that it was the best of the series or even tell me that it is better then 2 or 4, I haven't played the original for PC but hell that probably bets COD3. Point don't hate my opinion and replay with a smart ass remark that a bunch of other people agree with you because they don't see how COD:WaW isn't a Mod.
DRIZZLENUTS @ Oct 22nd 2008 2:29AM
This game is welcoming and it may feel like cod4 to some but i like the environments and color is brings graphically it topples cod4.Its like looking at gears one to gears two better lighting and color all around.Il ike the fact that you can be japanese or germans as enemy insttead of stupid spetznaz which always felt like i was playing a made up military in cod4.
I love my wwii guns and the melee seems to work better in this game as well as the pistols.
Otto @ Oct 24th 2008 10:58PM
Nothing better than voice of a Canadian television superhero to make a game worth the money. Maybe he could form a majority gov't.
durkastahn @ Oct 28th 2008 6:14PM
wow. this game is imense. the only things i dont like are the artillary strikes and juggernaut. WHY DID THEY PUT JUGGERNAUT BACK IN THIS GAME!? many people thought that there would be crappy guns with no attatchments... MORE guns with MORE attatchments. oh and by the way... THIS GAME IS GREAT! as i said once already.
William Hart @ Nov 6th 2008 3:00AM
I had no reservations against Treyarch, but after trying the beta myself... it just doesn't play well for me at ALL. At first I assumed my failure to get the groove was just inexperience but it really is just like COD4 - the things that change it are 1) every speed level has been increased, heavy weapons move like assault rifles, assault rifle like SMG, SMG very fast which makes run and spray tactics much more effective and 2) the outside forces that you can use are significantly more powerful to a fault in some cases. For instance the artillery lasts a substantial amount of time and is very randomized - don't mind it though, it works better than an airstrike is all. The dogs are much harder than you would guess; they just keep killing until someone is prepared enough to take them out, and they are tricky (thought I could hide on some barrels at one point but they hopped up some boxes lol). The tank is by far the worst though - took me eight satchel charges to defeat one, and my first time using it I got a 10 kill streak, including killing the other tank. The sound effects are bizarre; sometimes people running makes multiple footstep sounds a second, sounding like fifteen people running at once. At the same time people can be firing guns within twenty five feet of me but it sounds so quiet you don't know what direction it's coming from which is kind of unforgivable to me.
The game was fun to an extent but those who claim it's graphically, audibly or gameplay wise superior to COD4 must just be eager for a new game because I did NOT feel that it had anything over it. Anyway hopefully others find more to enjoy if they are eager to play it but it didn't convince me to buy, especially with Left 4 Dead around the corner.
Big Sargemrcd u @ Nov 10th 2008 1:22PM
I palyed the beta and have been a loyal fan of cod4 and to tell you the truth I love the fact taht the controls are virtually identical. I also love the new features such as longer artillery strikes, revive and the awesome dogs. Good stuff
