Gears 2 'Last Day' trailer, the new 'Mad World'?

A brand new ad for Gears of War 2, which hits shelves in two weeks, has just been released. Entitled "Last Day," it features Marcus Fenix and his fellow COG soldiers spending their last moments above ground before an underground assault on the Locust's home turf. The song featured in the trailer is "How It Ends" by DeVotchKa and tells viewers "You already know how this will end," as Dom and Marcus descend below the surface. Let there be no doubt, the commercial is definitely well produced.

We can't help but be reminded of the famous (infamous?) "Mad World" ad that promoted the first Gears of War, which makes sense considering it was created by the same team. Like the "Mad World" ad, "Last Day" is a radical departure from most action game advertising. Of course, that's precisely what makes it stand out. Find the ad after the break.

Our only question now is how long it will take for enterprising filmmakers to start remixing the ad with different music, or throwing the music onto other game commercials. Get to it, internets!

i agree with both of you. there's something about "mad world" that makes it stand out above all the rest. this was good, but not nearly of the same caliber.

doubly agreed. I don't think music choice was as good here, and didn't fit quite as well. Still ooks impressive though.

Mad World had a lot of emotion in it from the music. It almost made me cry when I saw it.

Liked it, but not as much as the Mad World trailer... at least not yet. Maybe it will grow on me. I was expecting more...

But... that doesn't change the fact that I am SUPER excited for this game and it will be the one title this fall that will completely suspend my WoW playing. Can't wait.

I agree that its not as good as mad world but watch it again with lower expectations and it works as a decent trailer that will grow on you.

Well I liked it, even though it wasn't "Mad World". Two things, though:

1. That is the brownest commercial I have ever seen.

This trailer was decent, with a similar idea of plunging into a fight as Mad World, but the GOW2 Rendezvous trailer really nailed it in my opinion. I get breathless when I watch that (the tribal drums and stuff are epic).

I agree, Rendezvous was maybe my favorite trailer of all time. Game or movie...it just kicked ass. Gives me chills everytime.

This trailer is definitely good though, I had to go and get the "how it ends" song and listen a few times.

Can't wait for the actual game!!!

its good, but not "mad world" or the halo 3 announce trailer good. That Halo 3 trailer's music made me (and the furutre mother in law's) eyes tear up the first time we heard them.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Halo's music is just too amazing, and really is some of the most moving music I've heard ever, especially for a video game!

Can't wait until they incorporate it in to make that movie really stand out.

That trailer just made my sweaty hot man-member swell with delight.

Reminds me of the scene in Saving Private Ryan when they are all relaxing and talking right before the big battle.

I like how Cole was going to snipe a flower though. BOOM HEADSHOT! Pollen and petals everywhere! Oh the humanity. Take that daisy, and tell the tulips that the train is a smooth ride.
