Video: Prepare for Fallout 3
Console gamers may not realize that Fallout 3 isn't the first jump into the post-apocalyptic universe -- you know, if the 3 in the title wasn't a glaring indicator. Looking to catch up before Fallout 3 lands on the Xbox 360 tomorrow? GameTrailers has developed a 15-minute retrospective on the famed series that will showcase how Bethesda has decided to evolve the series into an Oblivion style game -- much to the chagrin of some of the original fans. Excited for Fallout 3? Tell us in the comments below but if you've been lucky enough to play it early, do not spoil anything ... a swift banhammer will be in your future if you do!

I am excited. Fallout 1 and 2 were good and even though 3 is quite a bit different, I am glad it is going in this direction. I like the open world RPG and loved oblivion. For me, at least, this is more the style of game I like compared to Fallout 1 and 2. Not a huge fan of turn based fighting. I like real time and Fallout 3 is mostly that (with, of course, VATS help, which looks sweet.).

It seems to me like the FO series has moved from PC-centric to console-centric since the FO2 was released. This style of 'open world RPG' works so much better on a console than the 'dungeon crawling, slightly turn-based' version. I think it would have been difficult to find a market on the consoles if it wasn't 3rd/1st person. I'm excited. Picking up my pre-order after work tomorrow.

I'm willing to bet that the number of new fans they are getting with "another Oblivion game" vastly outnumbers the number of fans who feel this game will be a disservice to the series.
I'm psyched about the game, and I never heard of Fallout before (which I'm actually very surprised about, because I've always been into that type of game).
What would you prefer, another top-down experience? From watching the video, it seems like this version of FO will do everything the others did, except better. First person vs top down gives it a different feel, but it's a more enveloped feel imo.

Looking at various gameplay movies they unfortunately show mostly running and shooting action. I hated Oblivion and quit playing it after my character was literally told that he must save the world (oh, please...). If Fallout 3 is indeed "Oblivion with guns" then no, thanks, I'll pass. They must put up a demo on the Marketplace, if I can't see it myself I will never purchase it in fear of loosing money on another Bethesda game...

I felt like I was playing with paper dolls in oblivion, I felt so daft for having bought it sight unseen. I tried, I put in many hours, maybe not enough, but the stale gameplay mechanics, the "zoom into the ugly face every time you speak to an NPC" and the lack of any emotion in ANYONE was something I could never get over.
I remember closing the first gate and running up/around the dirty bloody circle whatever and it felt so unreal, something that should have been on the PS1.
Fallout seems to have improved upon SOME of the little niggly bits, but the retarded AI, stale character animations and poor fighting system (that EVERYONE is mentioning - even the good reviews) are enough to keep me away.
Mass Effect, flawed as many things were, worked. Having a vocal lead, AI for NPCs that was far from perfect, but still enjoyable and a flawed, but still functional, fighting system still is a standard for me with these kinds of games.
As for a demo - they won't release one. Honestly, they don't need to. Oblivion carries enough weight, it's simply not necessary to do so.
Why am I even posting this anyway? This is an old post and who the HELL reads this after the first few days..

There's only one important thing... The PLOT! In case someone forgot that Fallout is a RPG... is supposed to be at least. I can forgive many things, but not a naive, poor or missing plot in a _role playing_ game. I dislike D&D a lot, but Neverwinter Nights 2 (I know, PC) is actually enjoyable and if Obsidian was making Fallout 3... ;)
From what I have seen so far Fallout 3 is all about shooting moving objects and the only dialogs I've seen were not very branched. I want to see how the game looks and feels besides shooting, I can (and will) buy BioShock if I want a FPS! Honestly, I could live with the shooter part of Fallout, but it absolutely must be accompanied with great story, many dialogs, interesting quests (something else than "go there, kill everyone and bring me that item"), evolved characters and so on. I feel like Fallout may be lacking them (I know Oblivion did).

I have played Wasteland on my C64 what feels like ages ago and been a postapocalyptic fanboy ever since, and I for one like what Bethesda has done with the Fallout license.
The switch from Iso to 1st/3rd person doesn't bother me. I'm just hoping the combat mechanics work well, because frankly the combat system in Oblivion sucked, especially if you tried to go ranged or magic. Pretty much everybody rushed you like crazy. But from the look of things V.A.T.S. seems the step in the right direction.

I played and still own (legit) copys of Fallout 1,2 and tactics (packrat i know) and I am very much lookign forward to this game, i know it is not going to be the exact same style as the 1st 2 games but the premis itself of a post nuke society always draws me in as an RPG fan, I will be picking up a copy on my home on tuesday ! ...gotta finish Fable 2 tonight ...thinking about going home sick... *cough

The VATS system is amazing. Simply put. You want to use it as much as possible. Not only does it make combat easier, the action shots are so much fun.
