Chronicles of Riddick picked up by Atari, now has brand new campaign
Atari today announced that it will publish The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena from Tigon Studios and The Darkness developer Starbreeze Studios. The title was previously announced as a graphically enhanced remake of the original Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay that would also feature a new chapter and multiplayer support. According to the press release, not only will the game include the remake of the original campaign, but the new chapter has now been expanded to include "a brand new full-length campaign" as well as the previously announced online multiplayer support. We're just going to guess that might be why the game missed its original winter 2007 release date.
The newly revamped Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is expected to release in spring 2009. Check out a hi-res version of the first screenshot by clicking the image above.

So... maybe it's the influenza infecting my body, but I'm confused. Is this the remake plus a new campaign, or a new campaign altogether?

Yes, it still includes the remake of the original campaign. Now it just has an additional campaign as well.
I clarified the text a bit.

I'm glad to hear that. When I heard it was being remade for the 360 I sold my original Xbox copy. I got a little worried when there hadn't been any news about it in a while.

The original was one of the best games to come out on the original Xbox IMO. Graphics were good. Gameplay was great. Only thing missing was multiplayer support, which the remake has. I'm excited for this.

YEAH!! I loved the movie and I thought it was very underrated.
Sadly I never got the chance to play the game on the old xbox :(

the original on xbox is one of the best games ever developed for it, it pushed the little 700 mhz CPU/geforce to the max, so much so that it couldn't be virtualized in BC mode for the xbo 360 hence why it was never added.
For a xbox 1 game it looks amazing very similar to first gen launch xbox 360 games (looks over at king kong and cod2)
any with a old xbox and $20 should pick it up you love the game.

The game on the old XBOX was awesome. It combined stealth, FPS, a cool story, cool cinemas - it had everything. The graphics were cutting edge - some of the best on any last-generation platform. I still remember most of the game and story to this very day. When you can remember playing through a game for many years after, that says something. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the franchise.

WHAT A RELIEF!!!! I had begun to think it was cancelled. Great news!

The first game was one of the best xbox games made. It has to be one of the top 10 least appreciated games of all-time.
Good move Atari!

I am very happy to hear this was not cancelled... Things got prety quiet for a while there.
I only hope this succeeds and sparks enough interest to continue the Riddick series, I may not be the biggest Vin Diesel fan but I have nothing but love for Richard B. Riddick.

I always wanted to play the original but never had chance. Yay!
Mazrael @ Oct 30th 2008 3:49PM
Ugh.. Atari.. why haven't they shut up shop yet..? Couldn't they get anybody else to publish it?
LuckyEMS @ Oct 30th 2008 5:05PM
this is gonna be sweet

This is good news. I'll definitely be giving it a bash, after hearing so many positives about the original

One of the best games on the xbox. I beat the game 4 times on the xbox, and 2 times on the PC. Graphics are truly amazing even when compared to most xbox 360 tiles.
