XBLA Portal file size exception, not the new rule
According to Microsoft, the hefty 629MB file size of Portal: Still Alive for the Xbox Live Arcade is not setting a new maximum standard for games on the service.
In response to inquires made by our sister-site Joystiq, Microsoft stated: "We have set file limits as a general guideline. An important part of Xbox LIVE Arcade is easy access and keeping file size down is a vital part of that. Equally important is offering titles with superior game play. We weigh both considerations on a case-by-case basis, and will make exceptions when it makes sense to ensure the best customer experience." In May, Microsoft increased the XBLA file size limit to 350MB.
So, the XBLA still has a hard file size limit ... except when there isn't. Wait, what?

The XBLA still has a hard file size limit ... except when the developer dangles enough money in front of Microsoft to look the other way.

LOL, 350MB, thats pathetic. Talk about last-gen console.
But then I suppose you have to cater for the tardpacks Arcade and Core...
myabsolution @ Oct 31st 2008 12:55AM
Hey Mik!
Have you played any games on XBLA?
There are tons of awesome high-def games that can fit under even 350mb of space, even less than 150mb.
You obviously have never even turned on an xbox 360.
STFU and go away.

I thought i heard some MS employee saying the file limit isn't really a limit but more like a guideline. Also i think one of Valve's requests for this to be 360 exclusive was for it to go over the size limit when they were negotiating.

What you must learn is that these rules are no different than the rules of a computer system. Some of them can be bent. Others can be broken.

Upon reading the post, first I thought of that quote, and then I thought of Pirates of the Carribean:
"They're more like guidelines, anyway!"

This is all a lot of nonsense... They need to spend less time catering to the No-HDD crowd and more time enticing them to join us, over where the real potential is.
Besides, don't they have a gob of old 20 gig drives they are offering on the cheap? Put those puppies in stores, get these kids to move on from their bare bones arcade version and get into the real action, I understand the hardrive caused a fair amount of trouble for them last gen but the world is changing, games are changing... How many more titles are going to suffer because developers are afraid of that goodish chunk of the market that can't utilize the system to it's potential?

I have to agree that the file size limit hinders XBLA. There are several games on PSN that are not even possible on XBLA under the current rules (Pain, Wipeout HD) It's a shame, but that is one of the reasons that I have purchased WAY more stuff on my PS3 than my 360. The other reason being the outrageously priced HDD and the fact that I can buy an off the shelf HDD for my Ps3.

Am I missing something here? Most of the demos I download on XBOX Live are over 600mbs, 1gb even.
