Review: Gears of War 2

Ultimately, Gears 2 has a few promises to live up to. When it was announced the first marketing spiel thrown out with it was, "Bigger, better and more badass." Does it answer those claims or does Gears of War 2 fall faster than a burning Locust Reaver? Jump in for the full review.

Gallery: Gears of War 2 -- Act One
When last we left our heroes Marcus and Dom, the pair helped ignite the hollows with a lightmass bomb, designed to destroy the Locust horde beneath the surface of the fictional world of Sera. Six months later, the beginning of Gears 2, we learn that the Locust have survived and the human race is in an epic final fight.
Gears of War 2 does something the original only did in cutscenes, it makes players feel like they are in the middle of a war. While the original had fantastic encounters, each felt compact and separate from a much larger battle. From the beginning, Gears 2 feels like a broader world experience. Gears of War was a more isolated experience and while Gears of War 2 could be compared to the battles in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (specifically the War Pigs level), ultimately the scenarios are more intense due to the variety of enemies on screen and limited character movement.

While the battles are intense and large the sense of scale may be misconstrued as more than it actually is. The bigger and more badass in Gears 2 is directly pulled from the amount of enemies on screen but the entire experience is unfortunately very linear. While the game does break off from time-to-time, much like the first one did where players choose to go one way or another, the decisions ultimately only separate teams for a matter of minutes and then they are back following the yellow brick road to win town.
Gears 2 performs better than the original. The enhanced Unreal Engine 3 adds new detail to character models while splashing beautiful color throughout the various levels. While pop-in, textures jumping into place during level loads, has gone the way of the Dodo bird the engine now suffers from fade in textures from time to time. Some levels load with smooth surfaces as detail fades into view within a few seconds. It's strange at first but less abrupt than the original issue of jumping into detail.

Gears of War 2 nails encounters with countless waves of various enemies, all with intelligent strategies and tactics to end your push to victory. Every battle feels perfectly constructed and while the intensity rises throughout the game, the experience never became overwhelming in the 10-hours it took for the single-player to be completed.
Unfortunately, the boss battles in Gears of War 2 do not live up to the same promise of bigger and better. While the game includes superior regular encounters to the original, only one boss fight and subsequent strategy stands out as memorable and worthy of multiple attempts or discussion and that battle is very early in the game, while Gears 2 included a few memorable boss battles.

At the end of the original Gears of War players were thrown multiple questions. Who are the Locust and why do they fight? Unfortunately, Gears of War 2 won't answer most of those inquires but will pose new questions while giving generally reasonable, sometimes heartbreaking answers. However, the game also asks new questions that are ultimately never addressed. Maybe they'll make a third one of these huge blockbuster games, you think?
When Halo 2 was released and players were faced with the shocking reality that the ending was completely missing, the internet exploded. Gears of War 2 isn't as frustrating but ultimately the ending is quite abrupt. Make no mistake, it does end but those who glean satisfaction from a final encounter and epic cutscene may walk away disappointed. If you're the type of player to remember the whole experience and not just the last five minutes then the end won't hit you as hard and you'll walk away happy. In the end, I did.

Trust me, Gears 2 will definitely sell. There WILL be a Gears 3. I think that can be guaranteed. It's just a matter of when and if it will be on the 360 or the next console.
Im still hyped about the bots feature. Coolest thing ever. It's actually fun to play against them, so far anyways. Im getting some good practice. Now im trying to imagine Halo 3 with bots. Dont think it would work out as well seeing the game play is just so different and frankly there are too many aspects to Halo 3 with all the jumping around and weapons and what not.

Know I want this game more!!! Friday can not come quick enough!!!!
PSN: John-Paul-Jones @ Nov 3rd 2008 12:45PM
GAH! While you guys are waiting for Friday, I have to wait until I get my 360 back, and I don't know when! Until then, my pre-order copy of GeOW2 is going to be pretty lonely.
:(

I love Release Date delivery at Amazon. I'm gonna be chomping at the bit to get my hands on it.
KnightNZ @ Nov 3rd 2008 11:47PM
It's "champing".
Am I the only one that remembers that this game was announced as an intended trilogy before the first game was even released!?
todd @ Nov 3rd 2008 9:18AM
Could care less if I buy it going in with my CC ad to BB this weekend and see if they will price match the 1600 card. Looking for a good deal like that to bother buying it.
Urza @ Nov 3rd 2008 9:32AM
I hate how people always have to bring up the ending of Halo 2. It's the middle game of a 3 story arc. It's supposed to be a cliffhanger, if anything, leaving Master Chief and Cortana floating in space (about to crash on an alien world) at the end of Halo 3 is worse because Bungie was saying Halo was done.
Endings aside, I'm not surprise the game doesn't answer much. The book answers a lot, just like the Halo books answered a lot.
4 More days!

pretty sure you can't get the 1600 pt card as a CC match from BB. They will honor any prices but not promotional "free" items.
I guess it is a possibility but I brought the CC flier when they were doing a buy one 1600 pt card get one free and BB wouldn't match citing the above.
I may be getting my copy of GOW2 today... psyched!
Vcize @ Nov 3rd 2008 10:11AM
It's YMMV. They're not supposed to match it, but many of the CSR's don't know that and will override the computer when it tells them not to match, thinking it's a glitch.

Well-written review, Xav. Seems very fair to the game without being overly gushy. Looking forward to picking this one up... as long as I get my xbox back in time from my second RRoD experience :(
Devin @ Nov 3rd 2008 1:29PM
2nd!? Unbelievable.......
Tucker @ Nov 3rd 2008 6:13PM
Nope, it's very believable. My first one RRoD'd on me before they acknowledged the defect, so I'm hoping the one I get now will be a "fixed" version. Ironically, two of my friends also had theirs RRoD at about the same time last week. Must have been something in the air.

I started playing this game yesterday. I have to say, I am pretty impressed with the bots. I played a few matches with some bots and they play much better than I anticipated. It can really give you someone to practice against even.
The Campaign is pretty good so far. I still dont like how you cant skip cut scenes. Perhaps you can if youve already sat through them, im not sure. Another thing that I didnt like in the first one was when Marcus talks to control. You cant do anything and you walk slow while he talks. So far it isnt as much as the first Gears, but it still occurs more often than Id like.
He is right about bosses. I cant say that ive been extremely impressed about the boss fights or lack there of.
Multiplayer seems to load slower when starting a match. Not sure if it will work better online or if there is any adjustments you can make to the countdown timer.
There are security fields in at least one of the maps that can be turned on and off by players. They are marked for a reason. If you try to pass through one, you get torn apart basically.
Over all, there is A LOT to the multiplayer experience. New maps, new modes, just seems like there is so much you can do. I think people will be playing this for a long time, providing that online lag or host advantage isnt a huge issue.
I expect Halo 3's online player count to drop significantly for quiet a while. Or atleast until the 6 new maps come out next year.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 3rd 2008 10:47AM
Maybe I missed it previously, but the bot addition sounds good. This was the first I heard of it. I sometimes like to play locally to learn the maps and where things are and good strategy. This will be a good way to do so.
ChuckJ @ Nov 3rd 2008 10:57AM
Yeah, it is. I have only played a handful of matches using bots, and so far ive enjoyed it a lot. Im really getting some good practice. And to add to what you said, you can learn the maps as well while actually playing against an opponent (bot) rather than just walking around by yourself to learn the maps.
But yeah, this is hands down my favorite addition to Gears so far.
magicmoo @ Nov 3rd 2008 11:10AM
You can definitely skip both cutscenes and dialogs with the back button of your gamepad.
As for the boss fights, at first I thought they were pretty dull (except for one) when I played through in normal mode, because there's no need to understand what you're supposed to do (you'll never have to deal with killing blows), but they definitely start to make sense in Hardcore or Insane modes and were actually quite fun to my mind.
Vcize @ Nov 3rd 2008 11:32AM
The bot addition is cool, but the bots are terrible, even on insane.
If you play an all bot match and die early on the round WILL end up in a draw, guaranteed. All the bots do is sit behind cover, pop up for a second and lancer whore, and then drop back down. If you die the bots will just get into an endless cycle of this until time runs out.

I want to know one thing: Does Cole Train do his thing in the credits? I'll be disappointed if not.
Hak @ Nov 3rd 2008 12:11PM
I played Halo 3 for 10 minutes and sold it, while this game actually had an emotional impact on me towards the end, won't spoil it for you, but you gotta play it through at least once.....
Brit Mckay @ Nov 3rd 2008 1:31PM
Meh. I don't know when I'm gonna pick this one up. I traded in my copy of Gears. I just couldn't PLAY online. All I saw was Longshot AR Down Curbstomp or Gnasher AR Down Melee, or Gnasher AR Kill, or Longshot AR Headshot. I was the only person still playing cover and such as, then some fruitcup would come up and Gnasher AR Down Curbstomp me. It just wasn't my bag and such as.
Mrblonde @ Nov 3rd 2008 11:28PM
Thats why you play with friends.
Brit Mckay @ Nov 3rd 2008 11:55PM
Yeah, I've done that before and it was good. I must admit that. I'm sure that eventually I'll pick this one up, but not in the foreseeable future.
maveric101 @ Nov 3rd 2008 1:44PM
i'm not so sure about the bots... it's just not the same as playing a real person. i think halo benefited from not adding bots.
OMEGA PHX @ Nov 3rd 2008 2:51PM
Im so pumped right now I want this game so badly i cant wait for friday midnight launch w00t
Bryuu @ Nov 5th 2008 10:03PM
Thank you for the spoiler-free review! One of the reasons I'm buying it is because it actually has a story.
Malik @ Nov 25th 2008 11:40AM
