Rumor: Zune to double as additional Xbox storage

X3F reader John O. just sent in an interesting rumor tip regarding the Zune's future use as additional Xbox 360 storage. That is, official Xbox 360 storage.
The rumor comes from the latest Zune newsletter that posts a link to this survey. After click "Yes" to the first question, question number two asks "Have you ever connected your Zune to your Xbox to do any of the following?" Not newsworthy, except for the fact that one of the possible answers is "Use my Zune hard drive for extra Xbox storage". Interesting ...
Just don't get too excited, because survey answer could have dual meanings. It could be referring to a Zune being used as official Xbox 360 storage allowing game saves and Marketplace downloads, which would be BIG news. Or the survey answer could be referring to the Zune being a portable media device and used as music and picture storage for use on the 360. If that's the case, this isn't news.
[Thanks, John O.]

Would be kind of nice/smart to use the Zune as a user save/game save, like a memory card.
Felipe @ Nov 13th 2008 3:29PM
same thought here. only dont restrict to only Zunes. why not try expanding onto phones and other pmp's? i can connect my motorola slvr to the 360, but all it does is charge it. it would be nice if they would do something to allow usage of other peripherals to double as memory cards or to transfer pictures, videos, or songs between the two.

I imagine solely because the storage contents of a Zune can only be access through Zune software. MS has total control over this, just as they do with what the 360 is willing to utilize.
NeoK-182 @ Nov 13th 2008 3:30PM
man. to use the Zune as extra storage like a memory card would kick ass.
Donalds5 @ Nov 13th 2008 3:33PM
someone has got to try this out now, sadly, i dont have a zune yet, but i'd go buy that gears2 limited edition one that has 120gb, if you can store dlc, game saves, etc
Numbn8 @ Nov 13th 2008 3:49PM
Chances are it's a question to rule out liars that check everything so they get full rewards of the survey.
Example : have you ever used your Xbox to watch blu-rays?
pibs @ Nov 13th 2008 3:58PM
If that would be implemented in future updates I wouldn't mind shelling out a couple bucks for a zune.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 13th 2008 3:59PM
How about any external portable hard drive? 1 TB FTW!
Sony @ Nov 13th 2008 4:01PM
It's good to have meanings DUEL. There's nothing more intellectual than having meanings duel it out! Let the best definition win!
tabicat @ Nov 13th 2008 4:12PM
Just don't get too excited, because survey answer could have duel meanings.
It could also have dual meanings.
Mokano40 @ Nov 13th 2008 4:27PM
I'd like to use it as an external hard drive, it would be nice to install the games there, the 120GB is still to expensive and i need a solution.
Edge @ Nov 13th 2008 4:39PM
If I could carry a Gamertag and profile on a zune and have it load wirelessly to a 360, I would be all over that.
E @ Nov 13th 2008 4:42PM
Haha! Zune sucks.
DiddlyKong @ Nov 13th 2008 5:02PM
I just got the GOW2 Zune and got to say this would be great.
cesar @ Nov 13th 2008 5:15PM
I remember that the usb ports from the 360 are read only, so you can`t write , meaning this rumor is fake
cloud858rk @ Nov 13th 2008 5:51PM
That makes sense. Except that's completely ridiculous. If what you say is true, how would replaying a message through a wired controller and wired headset work?
Van @ Nov 13th 2008 5:37PM
Sounds like the second option. It's extra storage for your music, videos, etc... not for games saves and such. The survey question is "Have you ever", not "Will you ever". If this was true, then a lot of people would have known about it by now...
Mazrael @ Nov 13th 2008 6:03PM
Maybe then, Zunes would see a release in the UK.. I've not seen any...
Henry @ Nov 13th 2008 6:21PM
How is Zune doing? Does anybody actually buy these. I see ipods everywhere all the time, only ever once spotted a zune.
niakori @ Nov 13th 2008 7:18PM
I have 2 zunes, the 80gb indestructible (I've tried) brick and the sleek really small oh-my-god-I-can't-feel-it-in-my-pocket 120 gb. I adore both. I've been through 3 ipods previously and can say hands down that I will never go back to apple. Touch be damned.
danial @ Nov 13th 2008 7:11PM
just tried with my zune,it doesn't have the 3.01 update (still on 2.5) or whatever it is but when i go to storage devices it does not get listed, but obviously i see it in the media blade for music, pics, and videos.
Erwos @ Nov 13th 2008 7:19PM
The magic for doing this would be in your 360, not in your Zune. All the Zune knows is "did you say to do X? I'm doing X." I'd be more interested if someone with NXE and a Zune could try it.
That said, this seems extremely reasonable - the platform is locked down and Microsoft is in control. If they're not planning on doing this, they should really consider doing so...
Gemini Ace @ Nov 14th 2008 6:57AM
I've been suggesting this since the Zune launched. Now that I've sold my Zune, M$ gets on the ball. Nice!
Smacksmackums @ Nov 14th 2008 10:14AM
This would totally be a way to sell more Zunes. I'd get one for sure if we were able to use it as another full on storage device. Why haven't they done this yet?
sldtrap @ Nov 14th 2008 10:51AM
I never thought about them using my 80GB Zune as extended storage. I sure would love to use it like a MU so I can travel more easily with it. Store demos on it, etc. I don't put movies on it, so I only use about 20GB storage for all of my X3F In Brief videos. ;-)
Sadly, the Zune isn't as well-received as the iPod, but it is a good platform, and works very well. I like it better than my daughter's new 4GB iPod, even without the shake-to-shuffle feature or the picture-turning capability.
My wife is getting an 8GB Zune for Christmas.
I just wonder how using the USB would affect the throughput of the data for games and such. I suppose a simple buffer would fix an issue like that.
If you want to be a rebel, get an Apple computer and a Microsoft Zune. Now THAT'S backwards from everyone else!

Cant u all ready pull music and videos off of the zune and play them on the xbox? i can do it with music and pictures from my ipod and all media via my external hdd?
Slaterific @ Nov 16th 2008 6:26PM
I have the NXE, and a Zune. I've tried to use it as extra storage, but it doesn't recognize it a a storage devise.
