Video: Installing the New Xbox Experience
Our pal Major Nelson just posted a video detailing the New Xbox Experience installation process that everyone will be participating in next week when the NXE rolls out to the general Xbox Live public.
The installation process is rather straight forward, sign into Live, download a mini-update, restart, download big NXE update, restart and enjoy the welcome video. (Protip: The NXE welcome video is visually epic.) That's it, NXE installed! All that's left is a quick Avatar creation and then you're set to enjoy all that the NXE has to offer. We're sure your fanboy enthusiasm for the NXE is boiling over ... only a few days to wait!

you lucky ducky

Why don't they just release this early to those that want it so there isn't to much strain on the system come the 19th. They could do something like offer a code that downloads it early so everyone does not download it at once.
Michael Paul @ Nov 14th 2008 2:51PM
Past updates have been relatively quick, due to their size. I forget what the firmware size is, but I don't think it'll drag on long even with a BUNCH of people doing it.
With no bricking being reported so far, I'm waiting with fingers crossed...
Viridium @ Nov 14th 2008 2:51PM
It'll probably be a staggered release throughout the day so that not everybody is even capable of getting it all at once.
I still expect that Live is going to come to its knees next Wed though.
kyle @ Nov 14th 2008 2:56PM
on major nelsons podcast, they say its not completly finished, they still have some tiny things to fit into the nxe before nov 19th
Serio @ Nov 14th 2008 3:00PM
They're polishing it now, and i suspect it'll likely be finished around midnight the 18th. That's judging from earlier updates, where they finished it right on time.
Latin Trident @ Nov 14th 2008 3:15PM
i got the fable 2 dlc today. YAY
Henry @ Nov 14th 2008 3:17PM
The NXE is done. Its been done for weeks (at least the actual dash app). If it were not done they wouldn't be rolling it out to thousands of people for the preview. The only thing they at least claim to have to do still is some server end work but that wont interfere with an individuals use of it except for some marketplace stuff.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 14th 2008 2:46PM
I just downloaded it. Smooth, easy and quick. The new interface is actually fast, it does not lag. I actually got the email about 5 minutes after downloading it, funny how that worked out.
M @ Nov 14th 2008 2:50PM
how did u? its supposed to be after 2pm PST
cant be possible you already got it
DBoyFlex @ Nov 14th 2008 2:51PM
I don't know, they are rolling it out and they say 2 pacific at the latest. Apparently that does not mean at the earliest.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 14th 2008 3:12PM
On a side note, I got my Fable LE DLC code today via email.
Viridium @ Nov 14th 2008 2:48PM
Question - my Xbox has ringed and is waiting for MS to fix their system so I can send it back. In the meantime I've bought a new box (to be sold to a friend once mine returns), with which I'm using my own hard drive.
As I understand it, the NXE requires extra storage space beyond whatever firmware flash capability is available to the console itself. The new box with my drive is going to get updated next week when the NXE is available.
When I get my replacement box back, my hard drive will have whatever NXE component has been installed but the replacement box won't. Will everything be fine? Just pop my drive on and the box will download NXE fine?
Since NXE DOES require a memory card or hard drive for storage, what happens if you remove any drives/cards and power on the box?
Neuromancer @ Nov 14th 2008 3:15PM
Your 360 may explode.
Or maybe it just won't start, or the old dashboard will load. It'd be an interesting test.
Zeus.:God @ Nov 14th 2008 5:43PM
Why not sell your friend your old box?
Viridium @ Nov 14th 2008 5:52PM
Because he doesn't want to pay for an Elite and would rather have the CAD$170 Arcade I picked up for him. Plus I'd rather keep the replacement Elite and the extended warranty it's already got.
ryan @ Nov 14th 2008 3:00PM
What I find a missed opportunity, was the new blade guide and not having everything available while you play a game.
I mean, the options are there, but you have to go out of your main game and back to the dashboard if you want to do a quick memory check.
A minor gripe, but I love everything else.
Numbn8 @ Nov 14th 2008 3:07PM
I think I'm the only one not looking forward to the NXE. I don't play on live but use the content and arcade games. There should be an option if you don't want to update. It would be like MS forcing you to upgrade to IE8 or you can't look at anywebsites.
I'm half tempted to forget live, put on an eye patch, and join the pirate brigade.
Neuromancer @ Nov 14th 2008 3:16PM
It is what it is I guess, if it means you can get to your stuff faster it can't possibly be that bad.
laserboyjc @ Nov 17th 2008 12:13AM
actually the new system makes all my arcade games load instantly, which is much better than how they use to "pop in" into view since I had so many of them...its a cleaner look...trust me, its good
Matthew @ Nov 14th 2008 3:24PM
So....can we have a link to this visually epic intro video? Major Nelson skipped it.
Delgado @ Nov 14th 2008 5:05PM

Aero @ Nov 14th 2008 3:27PM
Argh.
I told myself I would wait until a few hours after the update to get it to make sure everything is fine with it but that video just hyped it up for me.
Damn you Major Nelson!
Tyler @ Nov 14th 2008 3:29PM
Just downloaded and installed the NXE. Really cool so far. Avatars really are not all that bad and I love the new look of it. Much better than the blades.
nnarum23 @ Nov 14th 2008 3:38PM
If this sucks, I'm definitely going to think about selling my 360...
Mrblonde @ Nov 14th 2008 4:12PM
That's a dumb reason
nnarum23 @ Nov 14th 2008 4:55PM
Why not? They're changing a pretty huge feature of the product. It's a legitimate reason to sell.
Fundi @ Nov 15th 2008 11:48AM
I bought my xbox for the games not the dashboard. Sure the dashboard does alot of interesting things but changing it wouldn't make me jump ship. It's still going to be able to do all the old stuff.
ryan @ Nov 15th 2008 3:30PM
Fundi makes a very convincing argument.
wargamer17 @ Nov 14th 2008 3:50PM
W00t! Can't wait for this update! On a side note, I got my Fable II DLC code finally!!! Perfect for a friday.
brizzah @ Nov 14th 2008 4:04PM
so i just turned on my xbox today and was promted to download nxe but i didnt get into the early program.... has anyone else had this happen to them??? i was like what the hell is goin on
im happy to mess around with it a week early tho!!!!
Mrblonde @ Nov 14th 2008 4:10PM
W00T! I got the update!
taz @ Nov 15th 2008 2:23PM
hopefully the full version is better than the preview program nxe, it is so buggy and confusing to navigate
shawn @ Nov 14th 2008 6:04PM
i have the new xbox experience, man does it look sweet,i was thinking of doing a youtube video...my youtube user name is vipor29
Mike @ Nov 14th 2008 6:44PM
I thought this update was a forced download? On the video you could choose "No" ?
Jon @ Nov 14th 2008 7:16PM
As it states on the pop up, as for every OS update, "If you decline, you will be signed out of Xbox Live"
So it IS still a forced download, unless you don't care to connect to Xbox Live. If that's the case, enjoy the blades forever - just don't connect.
Jason @ Nov 14th 2008 6:49PM
so what happens to the people who "illegally" downloaded the update?
AoE @ Nov 14th 2008 7:05PM
no access to xbox live until the dash rolls out to the general public.
bknight @ Nov 14th 2008 7:51PM
Is it going to be possible to do a offline install?
As i wont have broadband connected to my new house till after December?
AoE @ Nov 14th 2008 8:49PM
Should be, all other dashboard updates can be downloaded from xbox.com and either burned to a disk or put on a thumbdrive to install on your 360 :)
AtomicPhread @ Nov 14th 2008 11:13PM
Just Installed NXE tonight. Went ahead and set up netflix (already had an account) and an avatar. One problem - looks like I'll have to upgrade my broadband (768K RoadRunner) if I want to stream movies. Oh well, I was looking for an excuse to do that anyway...
Andrew @ Nov 15th 2008 4:04AM
Yea I have had the NXE since Oct 31 I think it was, and it just promted me for a big update today which hasnt changed anything but took about 20mins download.
But this dashboard is definitly AWESOME
vanquish @ Nov 16th 2008 12:30AM
Hey guess what I got the NXE early, and im not in the beta. And it has avatar creation and everything, and you can play online. I just connected to Live today and it asked me to update.
However I do live in Australia, so maybe its a early release down here.
miguel @ Nov 16th 2008 5:21AM
man.. seriously.. do you HAVE to have an avatar?? I really don't like 'em....
sdfg @ Nov 19th 2008 3:07AM
Am I the only one who thinks this new dashboard looks like a sideways xmb from ps3. i dont know but that looks suspiciously the same and the avatar from wii. oh micro$oft...
