Video: Winning a chainsaw duel in Gears 2
With the addition of the button smashing chainsaw duels in Gears of War 2, we've always wondered what the best strategy is for rapid B button tapping. Thanks to Chris Paladino and the Gamerscore Blog, we now have chainsaw duel strategy tips and tricks from the Epic crew. Personally, we agree with Cliff's caffeine consumption strategy that makes one's reflexes extra twitchy. Though, never tried the the clicky pen trick or the pinkie slide. But they don't sound too useful.

I could do with one of those old controllers with the rapid fire buttons.
Timerider @ Nov 16th 2008 12:44AM
I always wondered if people were using modded controllers during chainsaw duels. I rarely win them and I thought I was relatively fast with the button. But I think lag is a factor too.
Mike @ Nov 14th 2008 6:48PM
All I need is a controller with a Turbo Setting!
shane86 @ Nov 14th 2008 7:01PM
I just said that!
Mighty Healthy @ Nov 14th 2008 7:02PM
As a lifelong gamer, I've developed a spasm-like, rapid fire button press.
I'll rarely lose :)
Arnon @ Nov 15th 2008 6:09AM
Same here.. I move my left hand over (I'm left handed) and mash the button about 15-20 times a second with my index finger.. I've only lost once and that was because I was shot from behind.
SaNcTuS @ Nov 14th 2008 7:21PM
I hate people who chainsaw! Why must they make videos on how to be better at something who is soooooo easy?!
Jcarpio @ Nov 14th 2008 10:14PM
Well dude.. the gun does have a chainsaw on the end. they're going to use it.. best to prevent from getting chainsawed than bitch about it.
I don't do that because there is no chainsaw on the end of my hammerburst.. =)
JerkfacedFed @ Nov 15th 2008 1:28PM
jcarpio biggest noob excuse ever, they need to patch the game and bring back stunning and temporary disabling of chainsaw while getting shot. in lag it is impossible to stop someone from coming at you because they shake off the bullets and keep it revved.
they also need to patch the reaction time for proxy grenades on walls. it is completely unfair in lag that greandes explode before you even reach them due to the unreal engine predicting your location when running, even if you know its there and dive backwards when hearing the beep.
Xanto @ Nov 14th 2008 7:28PM
I, for one, welcome more people trying to chainsaw rather than use the shotgun like in GoW1
Bryan @ Nov 14th 2008 9:35PM
Hell yeah totally agree. No more run n gun with the gay shotgun now cover actually plays a part and the lancer kicks ass.
SadisticHam @ Nov 15th 2008 5:50AM
How can you agree with a guy who just said he welcomes the chainsaw and then go on to say it encourages you to take cover. What the hell?
Not it doesn't - It encourages you to run at the rival team like a retard pressing B cause for fuck knows what reason Epic are retards and decided to make it so shooting at a reved up chainsaw doesn't always down it.
They've noobed the entire game up, the only ones pleased at this are the ignorant bunch that seem to think Gears 1 was shotgun only.
The same people that still don't seem to realize shotgun with chance of winning>chainsaw which will one hit you unless you drop to his level and use the chainsaw as well.
Wtf.
Arnon @ Nov 15th 2008 6:10AM
I don't think you're playing the same game Sadistic >_> You cant run and gun in this game.. stopping power changed everyone's strategy.
Cal @ Nov 15th 2008 1:39PM
I agree with Sadistic here, they took Gears' original multiplayer and raped it from all angles. Whether Gears' original MP was intended to play as it did or not, there was no denying just how amazing it was, partly due to its simplicity and lack of a single auto-win weapon, and they should have kept that going...
People say that it had no teamwork, no, their team had to teamwork. To do well in Gears you had to play as a team, not just rush in and shotgun...
Zeus.:God @ Nov 15th 2008 2:59PM
What are you talking about? Of course they had a two auto-win weapons. Shotgun and active Longshot.
Timerider @ Nov 17th 2008 10:59AM
I still see lots of people using the shotgun-roll "tactic".
Anticrawl @ Nov 14th 2008 8:41PM
I win them by waiting until two people are dueling and then running up to steal the chainsaw kill.
Sam @ Nov 14th 2008 9:32PM
I cant believe people think this is actually decided over live by anything other than a 50/50 coin toss.
Seriously, its 100% luck. You could have the fastest turbo controller user in the world versus somebody who only presses the button once, and you could still lose.
Its probably more accurately metered and counted over a local matchup, but over Live, no. Its 100% a coin toss.
Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you, but give your fingers a rest. You're not going to be more likely to win, no matter how hard you rub those tubby little stumps over the B button.
Vcize @ Nov 15th 2008 1:00AM
Yep, that's why I wish they had done something a little different, like maybe bring up the active reload bar and whoever hits the button again closer to the target (as if you were reloading) wins the duel.
Arnon @ Nov 15th 2008 6:13AM
Really now? So why is it that I've never lost ONE out of the FORTY+ that I've done? Oh no no.. it's because of luck! Yup! I have a 50/50 chance of winning.. and I won all 40 times.
Please.. go fail somewhere else. Did you ever think that it can actually count how many times you press the button? Or is technology still made of sticks and stones for you?
Arnon @ Nov 15th 2008 6:16AM
I bet you.. that if I pressed the B button once, I would lose every time.. I BET YOU. Because I press the B button a LOT and I've lost.. maybe 2-3 times.
Arnon @ Nov 15th 2008 6:20AM
Not to mention this sort of thing has been done in many games and ALWAYS worked.. what in God's name makes you think that EPIC GAMES couldn't pull such a simple feature off? Or is it that you lose every time? Ever think that you just aren't good at it?
JerkfacedFed @ Nov 15th 2008 1:32PM
nah dude i dont think you're right on this one. the window for the b button presses registering must be very small though, so you gotta get your reaction time fast rather than setting up the controller and pressing it a lot of times after the fact. it must send the button presses to the person you're dueling basically right when they start yelling. why not hook up 2 controllers and test it out, youll see what i mean.
Timerider @ Nov 16th 2008 1:04AM
Arnon, shut up. You've said that like 5 times on this article alone.
Arnon @ Nov 16th 2008 2:20AM
Good.. let it sink into your bones and let it flow through your veins~
XzaR @ Nov 16th 2008 8:58AM
Total bullshit, there is no luck in button pressing competition if you don't slip the finger or something. And for a player with turbo button to lose he or she has to have over 500 ping or something.
I have won 5 times and lost around 20 times so I kind of hate chainsaw duels and it would be better if it was some button combination competition instead for pressing.
RICKDOEZ @ Nov 14th 2008 9:44PM
when are they gone patch this game..lol
Ellianth @ Nov 15th 2008 7:07AM
i agree.. multiplayer is really stupid. I'm not complaining about the guns. The whole "we'll pick a match for you, then we'll tell you what game mode you're gonna play (on public matches)" is extremely stupid.
The worst part is it usually takes like 20 minutes for the game to even find players for you to play with. It drives me ape-shits! Take 20 minutes to start a game then I'm forced to play a game mode that i don't like?
*sigh* awesome game though.
Sam Rocket @ Nov 14th 2008 10:28PM
As a Super Tecmo Bowl hall of famer- the "A" button skillz are now in my DNA. There is no 50/50 chance- I will win every chainsaw duel.
MrMuggs @ Nov 15th 2008 1:32AM
"Train your thumb to pound as fast as you can."
I have a feeling that Cliff has trained something else to pound as fast as he can.
ToRo @ Nov 15th 2008 2:25AM
His girl friend? Cause yea, shes hot.
But yea, I think they shouldn't have put chainsaw duels in the first place. When it comes down to it, it depends on who has the faster connection.
Arnon @ Nov 15th 2008 6:14AM
NO-IT-DOESN'T.. are people butt hurt that they suck at this feature of the game? My connection is horrible sometimes and I've walked away from at least 40 chainsaw duels out of like 45 dammit.
Seriously.. excuses excuses.
MrMuggs @ Nov 15th 2008 3:46PM
Toro: It was a joke. I didn't know you have a man-crush on Cliffy and when I made a joke you would swoop in to defend him. Loser...
And if you're talking about that skank who he dated that did Playboy then I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm embarrassed to know even this little bit about Cliff so I'll stop.
Timerider @ Nov 17th 2008 11:03AM
Jokes aside, that's what's wrong with the button press system. There is no way to better yourself at it. If you suck at it, you suck and can't improve.
inquisitivesquirrelisinquisitive @ Nov 15th 2008 4:22AM
what is the clicky pen trick?
cool-legend @ Nov 15th 2008 4:34AM
it actually is how times you can click the B button in 3 seconds
Procris @ Nov 15th 2008 7:52AM
Chainsaw duels are still damn random. Sometimes someone who hasn't even reved their chainsaw gets into chainsaws duels and often it seems like the person with the better connection in the game wins the duel, regardless of who actually taps B the fastest.
Timerider @ Nov 16th 2008 12:55AM
I had that happen but I had my chainsaw out and another guy still cut me, the duel didn't even occur.
They need to fix these bugs, and change the duel to 50% button presses and 50% 50/50. You know people are going to use controllers with turbo buttons.
JB @ Nov 15th 2008 10:10AM
I was in a duel that after the duel started the guy broke out of the duel some how and walked over and chainsawed me even when I was holding B. I think there may be a glitch he knows.
dave @ Nov 15th 2008 10:18AM
Use the old battery trick from nintendo track and field
ZenGaijin @ Nov 15th 2008 4:01PM
This whole feature of the game is lost to me. I never use the lancer so I don't get in chainsaw duels I don't even have the crossed swords achievement yet.
I am a great button masher but I also know that the sound of a duel attracts people, people like me who wait for two idiots to stand still defenseless begging to be shot.
rigved @ Nov 16th 2008 1:46AM
