Rare promises to 'surprise' with future projects
Talking with GamesIndustry.biz, Rare studio manager Mark Betteriedge hinted that their future projects will "surprise a lot of people, both in terms of what they are and the different styles."Betteriedge goes on to discuss Rare's roll within' Microsoft's overall gaming strategy, saying that Rare's goal is to expand the Xbox 360 demographic beyond the "shooter box" or "hardcore box" perceptions. "It's more about what we will do to change conventional thinking of games and entertainment. I don't see us fighting the same battles as everybody else." Hmm, doesn't sound like we'll be seeing a Killer Instinct sequel anytime soon ...

I don't care about a $60 sequel to Killer Instinct anyway just bring the original to Arcade. If they want to make kiddie games good for them.

I just want to say that Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is amazing. I haven't had this much fun in a while. The progression in the game has me hooked, I can't stop playing because I keep wanting more parts. Something about building this awesome vehicle using your own ingenuity and then dominating the challenge is so satisfying. The way you can fly in this game with planes or gyrocopters is just like Pilotwings, it's so fun. And the weapons are really cool.
I would advise people to not be turned off by lukewarm reviews on this game, you might LOVE it. Oh and with the demo, you can't do hardly anything, there are so many things and parts that aren't in the demo, it feels like a whole different game.
Also, the original Banjo-Kazooie on XBLA is pure greatness. The updated graphics look great and this game doesn't feel outdated. I also like the Stop N Swop feature. I already scored some sweet Fuzzy Dice in Nuts and Bolts thanks to that.
Honestly, right now, it seems like digging up the Banjo Kazooie franchise is the smartest thing Rare could have done. I already can't wait for Banjo-Tooie.
Now I really wish they would remake Perfect Dark like they have Banjo Kazooie, that would be the ultimate.

What he said. I particularly like how some of the challenges are open ended in how you accomplish them.
One challenge strongly suggested I build some sort of ramming ground vehicle. Instead, I build a light helicopter type thing, chucked a few guns on it, and accomplished the challenge much easier and faster that way.

I second that. Its fun and the quirks and jokes that are made in it are how I remember them on the N64. Especially the jokes aimed at the original game.
Chris @ Nov 17th 2008 9:11PM
Agreed.
I'm only a couple of hours into the game and I'm already loving it. I just started to realize the scope of the vehicles you can build, and the game is really open ended. It's a steal for 40 dollars.

If it's not Killer Instinct, I don't care.
RagingStormX @ Nov 17th 2008 4:41PM

"Rare's goal is to expand the Xbox 360 demographic beyond the 'shooter box' or 'hardcore box' perceptions."
Gee, I wonder to which demographic they're CASUALLY referring?

Conker or idc.
eubep @ Nov 17th 2008 3:08PM
Couldn't agree more on Conker. What better way to be different and give a middle finger to everyone than a cute squirrel who wants to fuck you up.
Mokano40 @ Nov 17th 2008 2:54PM

Goldeneye Goldeneye Goldeneye Goldeneye!!! ...*please*!?
PerfectStrategy @ Nov 17th 2008 7:08PM
I don't understand why everyone always wants Goldeneye. I assume it's just because they haven't played Perfect Dark.
Perfect Dark is superior to Goldeneye in so many ways.
Goldeneye was great back in the day playing with friends. Then I remember at one point we tried out Perfect Dark. We never played Goldeneye ever again after that. We still play Perfect Dark once in a while. The only thing that hampers it is the framerate and blurry textures expanded onto a HDTV. Both of which could be fixed for a XBLA remake.
Mr.U2 @ Nov 17th 2008 8:14PM
No, I know, you are right. I have played perfect dark, and Rare improved in EVERY way imaginable, and I love it as much if not more than Goldeneye... It's just... Goldeneye was the original classic game that took the N64 by surprise and stormed FPS's from that time forward. And it was just a lot of fun. If I had to pick which game was on the XBLA, ya, I would painstakingly have to pick Perfect Dark, because over all it was a better game. It's still a hard decision though.
LousyUsername @ Nov 17th 2008 8:03PM
Yay Golden Eye! Boo Haze!
BJ Wanlund @ Nov 17th 2008 11:56PM
Perfect Dark's multiplayer mode was so bad though. At least with Goldeneye I could play with a controller in my hands and still blast the everliving sh&t out of people!
The one mechanic I wish that every goddamn shooter maker kept from Goldeneye was keeping the right stick to TEMPORARILY change in where I'm aiming, or if I'm holding down a certain direction on the right stick, it STAYS there, instead of moving!!!
Please Rare, if you're going to remake Goldeneye and PD, PLEASE for the love of all that is holy PLEASE go back to that mechanic!!
BJ

Rare can go shove it. They need to put out a Perfect Dark 64 arcade port with live multiplayer up.
And you guys who were all "oh PD beat Goldeneye hands down." are tards. PD is very imbalanced. They at least have a chance to fix their messups with a live version.
And before you guys go nuts or anything, realize I'm the same Weclock who used to work with the Goldeneye Source dev team. :P
Ujn Hunter @ Nov 18th 2008 10:04AM
RARE Surprise? What like actually making a GOOD game for once? I'd be REALLY surprised! ;)
Courtney @ Nov 18th 2008 12:13PM
I don't quite get all the hate on Rare. Viva Pinata and Kameo were both welcome, and different, experiences for the 360. B&K looks to fill the same kind of slot this season.
