COD: World at War #1 in UK, outsells COD4 2 to 1
GI.biz reports that first week sales of Call of Duty: World at War in the UK have exceeded first week sales of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by a margin of more than 2 to 1. The game landed in the number one spot in the UK for all platforms according to Chart-Track. Considering the previous installment sold over 10 million copies, it's not too surprising that the latest has managed to pick up significant sales. Another thing that isn't too surprising (though perhaps a little alarming) is that Activision published games make up more than 25% of all game sales in the UK last week (thanks in no small part to the Lich King). The next step: Activision acquires a little start-up named Cyberdyne Systems. You know the rest.

A just released game outselling a year old game? Unpossible!
Deezul @ Nov 18th 2008 2:37PM
Plus, I'm going to guess that they also sold more 360s over the past year, so there's more of an audience? It would be news if COD5 sold at the SAME numbers or less, but not more.
I'll bet more people bought Halo2 than Halo1 it's first week, and more people bought Halo3 the first week than Halo2. How is that MAJOR news?
Cole @ Nov 18th 2008 2:44PM
They mean that the first week sales of W@W outsold the first week sales of COD4. Not sales of W@W doubled COD4 for last week only.
Phizzy @ Nov 18th 2008 2:39PM
It's too bad the game is horrible then, I suppose.
Mechanical @ Nov 18th 2008 2:55PM
Hahaha. No.
justin @ Nov 18th 2008 2:41PM
great, because i love with the 8 year old english kids get on and run their mouths. now i have TWICE as many people to mute. commence facepalm.
NOOK @ Nov 19th 2008 3:15AM
You're on PS3?
Tyler @ Nov 18th 2008 2:48PM
It also helps that Asda sold the game on all platforms for a mere £27 for a week. Which is $40 to you guys.
xenocidic @ Nov 18th 2008 2:55PM
Is this really surprising?
COD4 is pulling the W@W sled.
Carbonize @ Nov 18th 2008 3:06PM
Now if only TreyArch could make a good game.
Alexander @ Nov 18th 2008 3:26PM
They did, it's called Call of Duty World at War.
Carbonize @ Nov 19th 2008 2:58AM
Guess that makes you the one in a hundred that likes it.
Mechanical @ Nov 19th 2008 9:52AM
What rock are you under?
Given, my taste in games is rather cult-ish, but everyone I know that has it has remarked that it's damn good. Including myself. So it's not modern. You overlook the improved local gaming aspect, as well as the co-op. (That I will continue to hate on IW for NOT including in 4)
Maybe this'll be a kick in the ass for IW to step it up further. Modern Warfare was a good start. I hope they keep building up on this in the way that Treyarch has.
Carbonize @ Nov 19th 2008 11:10AM
Everyone keeps talking about how well TreyArch handle the multiplayer side of things (yes IW do suck at that and CoD 4 seriously needs host hopping and to check for the best host before each game) yet few seem to comment about the single player game or just the multi player game (not the mechanics behind it)
GrabMyJoystick @ Nov 18th 2008 3:21PM
It's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare... not Modern Combat, but thanks for letting us know this useful piece of information! *rolls eyes* Slow news day is it?
NukeAssault @ Nov 18th 2008 3:32PM
I find it pretty interesting. Its the little things hat count after all. =P
Richard Mitchell @ Nov 18th 2008 6:23PM
Ahem, quite right. Warfare.
Fixed.
Mokano40 @ Nov 18th 2008 3:34PM
I did not like COD5.
Bobluling @ Nov 18th 2008 3:54PM
I played the Beta and didn't like it ether, no matter what people say I think that Treyarch does not deserve credit for this game because they basically stole all the good parts from Activision.
Tom @ Nov 18th 2008 5:44PM
I concur.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 18th 2008 3:46PM
Cyberdyne? NOOOOOOOO!!!! GET TO DA CHOPPAAAAA!!!!1
COD WaW is amazing! The campaign is damn good and Zombie Nazi killing is SUH-WEET!!! MP is tons of fun, I dont see why COD4 lovers have to come shit on it? If anything it helps it. You can go back and fourth each day or week and get your fill of Modern, AND WWII without blinking and adapting to new controls.
SHEESH!
NukeAssault @ Nov 18th 2008 4:12PM
Nazi Zombies rocks! I haven't been able to play it online. So the furthest ive gotten by myself is only 8-9. Im not that great. Im even worse at Gears 2 horde. >_>
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 18th 2008 3:50PM
Oh, and to any PS3 fanboys who are lurking out there. Yeah I motherfucking told you so! Gears 2 and COD: WaW were gonna own Resistance 2! has it even broke 1 mill yet? PFFT! I rented it, its mediocre/bordeline generic.
Bobluling @ Nov 18th 2008 3:56PM
"its mediocre/bordeline generic."
Your talking about COD WaW right? No I'm not a PS3 fanboy (never even touched one b4) I just hate Treyarch and the junk they put out.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 18th 2008 4:25PM
I'm talking about Resistance 2. I know VGChartz isnt the most reliable source but it sais it only sold 300k. Not even close to being the blockbuster PS3 fanboys thought it would be. HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Flame @ Nov 18th 2008 5:05PM
You do realize it was only released in NA right? GoW2 was released worldwide. Everyone else gets R2 Nov 28th. Bad decision on Sony's part.
tboy123 @ Nov 18th 2008 5:13PM
so what? I knew W@W was going to sell good. But R2 has only been released in the US so far... last time I checked, PS3 sales are better in the rest of the world than NA. Check your charts at the end of this month, when it gets its world release. Then we can see.
Bobluling @ Nov 18th 2008 4:38PM
Yeah I know, I was just messing with you.
Xbox 360 FTW!
Familyguyrokz @ Nov 18th 2008 5:46PM
There should be a number of hidden things in society, that upon activating, the government collects you and takes you to a re-education facility. Like eating a 7-11 hotdog or buying a Treyarch game.
Mechanical @ Nov 18th 2008 7:52PM
The troll is weak with this one.
Grendel Pr1me @ Nov 18th 2008 6:41PM
You know, really this isn't all that surprising, considering the tentativeness that surrounded the franchise after CoD3, that sales were "sluggish" for CoD4 last year out of the gate.
If WaW ends up with the same legs that MW had, then it will easily surpass that 10 million mark. But, if those MW stalwarts choose to not leave the sweet, sweet sounds of the hovering helicopter behind, then WaW may end up as a great sales follow up. Just not a title that passes it's predecessor on the charts.
PeterF @ Nov 18th 2008 7:12PM
Yeah I was really hesitant to buy CoD 4 because I was just sick of the old ones but I bought it and saw how good it was!
