Kim: 360's lifespan 1 day longer than PS3
According to Microsoft head honcho Shane Kim, the Xbox 360 is here to stay for a long, long time and promises Microsoft will not end 360 production as quickly as they did with the original Xbox. When asked specifically when Microsoft will move from the 360 to another console, Kim claims they'll one-up Sony by making the 360's lifespan last "one day longer than the lifespan of the PlayStation 3". That's big, seeing that Sony is predicting their PS3 will last a 10 year life cycle. You heard it here first, the Xbox 360 will be around for 10 years and

I don't see how that's possible. The ps3 I see lasting longer because of storage capacity (50GB dual layer Blu-ray vs. 9GB dual layer DVD.) unless 360 wants to make multiple disc games down the road, they will have to adopt a larger storage format. Graphically it definitley can hold up with the ps3
JerkfacedFed @ Nov 18th 2008 3:12PM
i still dont understand why people continue to use this as a point against the xbox. starting tomorrow, all xbox 360 capable of installing single and multi disk games to hard drive, needing only disk 1 to verify. by the end of lifecycle of the 360, we will be able to get multi terrabyte hdds / ssds for as much as a ps2 memory card and games will be available to download as well. im happy about this. dlc is the future, bluray is useless.
Efeez1986 @ Nov 18th 2008 6:34PM
C'mon now, Blu Ray is far from useless. Don't be so childish.
pwnetheus @ Nov 19th 2008 7:47AM
@JerkfacedFed
Do you really believe that? How much is Microsoft charging for HDDs right now? If they allowed us to put in our own hdd or at least charged a reasonable price I'd agree with you but I don't see that happening unfortunately.
Mokano40 @ Nov 18th 2008 1:52PM
Wow, I hope so, I believe in 10 years the X360 will evolve a lot.
Ejab @ Nov 18th 2008 1:54PM
Actually if sony is making it poos3 last 10 year and MS is making 360 last 1 day longer the 360 will be around till november 12th 2016 Yay!
Ejab @ Nov 18th 2008 1:58PM
Btw that would make the 360's lifespan 10 year 355 days
Dirty @ Nov 18th 2008 2:02PM
They said lifespan. Implying that the next xbox will still launch before the next PS, just that it will have a day longer lifespan.
Lifespan lifespan lifespan
Jet Cero @ Nov 18th 2008 1:55PM
You might want to do your math again buddy... The 360 came out a year before the PS3 so that means it would be around for a bit longer than a year and a day. Don't mean to put you down Dustin but for the 360 "fanboys" I had to point that out...
Ejab @ Nov 18th 2008 1:59PM
I checked it, its fine.
Dustin Burg @ Nov 18th 2008 3:00PM
Why thank you for that.
Lucipher @ Nov 18th 2008 1:56PM
or is it 11 years and a day? (since the 360 had a head start)
Prox @ Nov 18th 2008 1:56PM
Fine by me. I like the existing hardware and would rather spend $350 on games than a new console.
Alex @ Nov 18th 2008 2:26PM
Tell me that again when you see Gears 5 on the Xbox 3.
yolarrydabomb @ Nov 19th 2008 9:58AM
or Halo 8 :P
Deezul @ Nov 18th 2008 2:06PM
I first read it that the 360 would predict the end of the PS3 life. Since the 360 has a one year head start, when its lifecycle ends, you know the PS3 only has another year...
Ah, quirks of the English language.
TurboFool @ Nov 18th 2008 2:06PM
I think you guys are misreading this a bit. It's not how long before the 360 is replaced, it's how long before it's taken off the market. Keep in mind that essentially all game consoles except the Xbox (and the GameCube to a lesser degree, since the Wii could replace it fully) have remained on the market for at least a couple of years after their replacements hit. And Sony's history takes this a notch further, with the PSone lasting nearly up to the launch of the PS3, and the PS2 still going strong.
Many of us have assumed, despite Sony's double-speak, that the ten-year lifespan they speak of for the PS3 isn't the time until its replacement arrives, which would be incredibly shortsighted and likely to guarantee their failure against newer competing consoles that will be out sooner, but is the total lifespan of the system including the above-referenced time in which it would co-exist with the PS4.
With that in mind, the same is likely what Microsoft is referring to with the 360. The day Sony stops manufacturing the PS3, despite how long the PS4's been around, is the day Microsoft emails out the memo to its manufacturers regarding the following day, regardless of how long the 720's been on the market.
Microsoft learned from the last two generations that when it comes down to the raw power consoles, first is everything. They're not going to release their follow-up after Sony does. That would be foolish.
Nick @ Nov 18th 2008 2:42PM
Exactly. the PS2 is still getting new games, am I mistaken in thinking that the lifespan of that is over? Sheesh, CoD: W@W is selling there, and there are still slow, but active releases.
Windows XP, same thing. It was still active even though people are migrating to Vista.
The "10 years" really means squat. It means the systems will be around, but they'll be on to the bigger and better a lot sooner.
Anyway, I've got both and I'll keep them as long as need be. I haven't sold a video game system since my Dreamcast/PS1 eons ago, and have been collecting them again since the Wii came out.
ryan @ Nov 18th 2008 2:07PM
With games taking longer and longer to produce these days I believe both these consoles could last that long.
And unless these consoles plan on swapping out GPUs processors upgrades, the PC will always be one day ahead of them graphically. Well make that several days if not years ahead.
Jonman @ Nov 18th 2008 2:07PM
Remember kids, just because they're projecting a long lifespan for the 360, doesn't mean that there isn't an Xbox720 due in the shops sooner than you think.
Sony are still shifting PS2s at a rate of knots, often outselling the PS3.
All Kim's saying is that they're planning to support 2 platforms in the marketplace at once.
mattclarkie @ Nov 18th 2008 2:08PM
Bad idea, especially as no 360 will ever last 10years, so most will be on console number 5 minimum.
I want a neXtBOX to be out by 2011.
yolarrydabomb @ Nov 19th 2008 10:01AM
why because 2012 is last day on earth? LOL
I taking my 360 to haven with my Terabyte connection
TrickyBAM @ Nov 18th 2008 2:13PM
If they take to long there will be a big shift back to PC gaming. Hopefully they don't wait to long.
Mokano40 @ Nov 18th 2008 2:26PM
Agreed, if never like to play in a pc other than the C&C red alert series, but if they las that long to launch a new console people will change to the PC due the graphic superiority by that time.
Deezul @ Nov 18th 2008 2:34PM
It's cyclical. For a few years, consoles rule, as the console AT LAUNCH is better than the average PC. Now, you find laptops with HDMI outs, ready to use TVs as additional screens. So PCs will be in the lead in at year or two, at which point the next Xbox is released. It takes the lead with 1080p gaming, 64 player multiplayer, vidoe chats with all team members, Blu-Ray drives, 1 TB or more of hard drive space.
yolarrydabomb @ Nov 19th 2008 10:02AM
I say it will take 10-15 years for Org. XBOX, PS2 will be fully emulated by that time for pc.
spartan029 @ Nov 18th 2008 2:27PM
So does that mean we'll have new xbox 364 days before PS4? Since PS3's lifespan started a year later than 360 ... or Kim thinks 360's lifespan is 11 yrs and 1 day? I'm confused :-/
DBoyFlex @ Nov 18th 2008 2:37PM
Semantics aside, I think what he is saying is that the xbox is going to be around longer than the ps3. How? Who cares. It is just a way for them to say they are better than Sony. Thats it. NO math, no confusion. It is more a comparison than anything.
Phizzy @ Nov 18th 2008 2:44PM
Irrelevant dickwaving.

In future, please call it something that doesn't bring such an image to the brain! D:
blainetrain @ Nov 18th 2008 3:29PM
really? because mine died within 3 weeks of having it. lol
Schmaefe @ Nov 18th 2008 3:32PM
Seeing as how PC games already look noticeably better, the consoles are already becoming somewhat outdated. I would expect a new 'Nextbox" or whatever 2011 or before, simply because by then PC games will be on a whole new level above what current consoles are capable of.
vidGuy @ Nov 18th 2008 3:36PM
With the way these companies define lifespan, it's possible that even the PS2 will have a longer "lifespan" than the PS3. I'd be extremely surprised if Microsoft didn't release their next console first.
yolarrydabomb @ Nov 19th 2008 10:05AM
PS2 lifespan last longer? HA! I take good care of mine (first lunch) and the disc drive already failing!
or you talking about PS2 Slim?
vidGuy @ Nov 19th 2008 6:57PM
It's not about the lifespan of a physical machine, it's about the console as a platform. It seems like the companies (well, Sony at least) define lifespan by how long a significant number of consoles out there are being used as a main platform. Because the PS2 outsold the PS3 until just recently, and the PS3 has had a rough start, it's conceivable that the PS2 will be alive longer than the PS3. IMO anyway.
Deone @ Nov 21st 2008 1:27AM
Mayan calender ends 2012. Thats probably when the console life cycles end too.
