Learn how to make your Avatar frown, laugh and burp the alphabet
After a few days of messing with the New Xbox Experience Avatars, we have come across a few hidden (and not so hidden) Avatar moves that'll make him (or her) do various expressive feats. You know, certain button presses that'll make your Avatar burp, laugh, get angry and even smack his head on your screen. Don't worry though, Avatar heads are jelly-like and shouldn't crack your television's screen. Our compiled list of Avatar moves is posted after the break and is broken into two different lists. One for Avatar fun you while in the customizer and one for the 360's dashboard. (Avatars tend to act differently in various surroundings.) We believe our list is rather comprehensive, but we're sure there are other goodies yet to be discovered. Think new hair colors. If you believe you've discovered an Avatar move that isn't listed, please, feel free to share.

While in Avatar Customizer, hold the left (or right) direction on the right thumbstick. Then after about a second, press the right thumbstick in the opposite direction. This will cause your avatar to do an enthusiastic spin.
Joel @ Nov 24th 2008 1:02AM
Sorry, typo. Should be the right thumbstick the whole time. You never have to use the thumbstick.
Dustin Burg @ Nov 24th 2008 1:59AM
Thanks for the info!
Vager @ Nov 24th 2008 2:24AM
It picture mode if you zoom out till the body icon highlights your Left Bumper expressions will have body animations.
ActualSize @ Nov 24th 2008 3:50AM
If you move your right thumbstick around while you burp it'll change the pitch of the burp.
Matt (DXL540) @ Nov 24th 2008 10:26AM
Yup, I found that one last night. Head back = high-pitch, head level = medium, head down = low-pitch. I was able to get a so-so rendention of Mary Had A Little Lamb.
Timerider @ Nov 24th 2008 12:45PM
Yeah I found that while making mine. Someone needs to play a song with it. Maybe "Still Alive"?
pikelet @ Nov 24th 2008 4:17AM
That is the cutest avatar picture EVER.
Dustin Burg @ Nov 24th 2008 12:18PM
Because it's ME!
jaerisk @ Nov 24th 2008 5:33AM
the xbox just got a little bit gayer....wii style.
Michael @ Nov 24th 2008 5:43AM
I'll take "gay" over testosterone challenged meatheads in gritty metal armour any day.
MDJ2010 @ Nov 24th 2008 6:48AM
jaerisk - Just got a little bit dumber!
Jack Tretton @ Nov 24th 2008 9:10AM
And you just got a little bit modded down...cajun style!
Loban @ Nov 24th 2008 10:33AM
I assume jaerisk is a PS3 fanboy. If that's the case, we should all find him online when Sony releases Home and post "Looks like the PS3 got a little gayer" after every post he makes.
jaerisk @ Nov 24th 2008 11:33AM
I own all three consoles...so I'm "allowed" to talk smack, and despite what you say, these little mii rip offs are in fact gay. Live with it.
MDJ2010 @ Nov 24th 2008 11:35AM
haha, he's allowed people, he's allowed. IDIOT!
Oshi @ Nov 24th 2008 11:54AM
"All three consoles"? Pssh. He's not allowed to say jack until he admits to still owning a Dreamcast!
SlimPickinz96 @ Nov 24th 2008 12:09PM
@Jaerisk
Your comment is irrelevant. Also, the truth be told your lame for owning a Wii.
Oops wait, your 9 years old, never mind. Carry on...
:P
betazealot @ Nov 24th 2008 12:27PM
No, SlimPickin, you made yourself sound as dumb as jaerisk. Owning a Wii does not make you nine. Stop being a fanboy. Also, if you're going to insult someone and call them 9, don't confuse "your" with "you're" twice in the same post.
That being said, jaerisk, if you really don't like avatars, ignore them, don't play with them, and everything will be fine. I wish people didn't just post stupid stuff like "that's gay". It maes them sound retarded. Exactly what do you not like about the avatars? Stated in a rational post. Arguing over whether something is "gay" or not is moronic.
xX FearHAVOK Xx @ Nov 24th 2008 4:08PM
did betazealot just correct someone their spelling and grammar? get a life.
xX FearHAVOK Xx @ Nov 24th 2008 4:10PM
someone *on* their
pete @ Nov 24th 2008 11:26PM
betazealot:
uhhh let me get this straight... you said you cant call something gay because "it maes them sound retarded." yea first off practice what you preach in terms of spelling. secondly, practice what you preach in terms of generalizing people, ie your reference to being retarded. YOU are just as bad a person as jaerisk, so stop posting here.
oh and with regards to your comment "Stop being a fanboy", go ahead and reread the name of this website and then go right ahead and slam your forehead against your desk a couple of times. maybe that will rid you of your know-it-all super-ego.
Joseph @ Nov 24th 2008 6:17AM
when you're in a party you can click down the left thumbstick (might be right) and your avatar will wave
RICKDOEZ @ Nov 24th 2008 8:42AM
oh for real...yawn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now back to g.o.w 2, avatar's bore me like sony's home...yawn! now back to the game's.
Christian Menniss @ Nov 24th 2008 9:00AM
I think the NXE avatars are coool!
forkboy @ Nov 26th 2008 12:13PM
Do you work for Microsoft?
MDJ2010 @ Nov 24th 2008 11:37AM
Well I dont and I think they're cool too, some people are against anything fun. I genuinely believe the only people calling these 'gay' and 'sad' are still in high school where these kind of things matter still in your life. No offesne meant to those in high school that aren't obsessed by how cool the nobody next to them thinks they are.
Conor @ Nov 24th 2008 12:32PM
I'm in highschool and I like avatars?
Mike @ Nov 24th 2008 9:18AM
I'd like for whatever I do with my avatar to show up on my friends' dashboards.
Then I'd like to have some combo to make my avatar give them all the finger.
C'mon Microsoft! Help a poor non-finger-giving avatar out!
offday @ Nov 24th 2008 9:18AM
You don't have to be in the avatar customize screen to do those. I've done some while I was in the same blade with the recently played games (not sure what the actual blade is called, but it's the one where you can actually see your full avatar standing next to your gamerscore, etc.)
schwal @ Nov 24th 2008 9:29AM
The spin move works in both directions.
joeybeast @ Nov 24th 2008 9:40AM
New feature I discovered QWERTY keyboard under language.
Sp1der X @ Nov 24th 2008 9:56AM
care to elaborate?
joeybeast @ Nov 24th 2008 10:52AM
it's under setting - language - English(QWERTY) i think
Mrblonde @ Nov 24th 2008 1:56PM
He means that you can make it so the on screen keyboard you use when sending a message is the same as a qwerty keyboard. The updated changed it so the on screen keyboard is in alphabetical order.
Spacks @ Nov 24th 2008 11:41AM
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but if you go to the start-over option in the customization menu the avatar does the shock/suprise expression. If you're quick about it you can snap a photo of this as your avatar picture.
Conor @ Nov 24th 2008 12:31PM
Not sure if anyone has already posted this but in photo mode when your taking a picture of your avatar, zoom the camera in as much as you can and nod his head forward and he will headbutt the camera causing it to shake.
Won't make your avatar too happy though.
Brad @ Nov 24th 2008 12:45PM
Is there a way to make male avatars stop standing in that sissy female pose?
ps fanboy @ Nov 24th 2008 1:50PM

Nick @ Nov 24th 2008 3:46PM
I really want to like the Avatars, and I think they are interesting, I think they can have some cool use.
THAT said, make them a little less "lame".
So that when I make a change, to make my avatar a bit cooler, it doesn't end with a Wii-esque happy dance.
I don't mind them being family friendly, but to have a "tee-hee" moment at the end of an avatar update just seems unnecessary.
That said, having an avatar that gives you the middle finger would kick ass ;)
Seriously though, I think maybe even like a rock god head bang, or at least slightly less kid-esque music after creation would be much appreciated.
Am I really the only one that agrees?
Helloimbob @ Nov 24th 2008 4:29PM
Yeah or away to use the avatars to emote your friends and stuff while playing with them in your party, cause all this stuff they let your avatar do is pointless, unless you like to sit at your xbox and watch animated people fart all day.
Benc @ Nov 24th 2008 10:21PM
Do anybody know is it possible to export the avatar into a moving "GIF" file in computer?
Steve @ Nov 25th 2008 10:48PM
Despite how "gay" the avatars are, Microsoft is making shit loads of cash off the xbox still.
they kinda suck now cause you cant really do much with them but I'm sure over time you can do some cool shit with em (like the avatar games)
Last I heard microsoft was working on the avatars before the 360 was released (so there not Mii rip offs).
never the less the avatars are a cool add on, something else to play with on there.
Nombo ug @ Dec 5th 2008 1:22PM
Avatars were created by a Microsoft Game Studios internal development studio, Rare Ltd. "before Miis were part of the gaming scene,"
quoted from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatars_(Xbox_360)#Avatar_Store
under technical details (around half way down the page.
As for avatars being "gay", i'm sure they are non-sexual! i think they look better than the miis anyway.
Scourgeofthegalaxy @ Jan 31st 2009 4:55PM
I just got a 360, made an avatar and discovered that I could move it. Next thing I know, I've given him a concussion.
And it depends on what defenition of 'Gay' you use. Happy or homosexual?
I play Wii, 360 and PS3. I still have a PS2, and even a Sega Mega-drive (Genesis in america) mark II 16-bit. Call that gay, and I will actually find you and poke you in the ribs/on the forehead, saying 'That was naughty. Never do that again.'
